How important are social signals to SEO?
Are generating social signals a must? It seems every website out there has some sort of social sharing tool installed, everyone is after a like or a tweet.
Are we now looking at getting as many likes/tweets etc from real accounts as possible because actually they effect SERP's a lot.

Social signals are the nearest thing to crawlers having human eyes. There's a pie chart somewhere on SEOmoz about this, I think social was about 7% of what search engines take into account.

Social signals have recently become increasingly important to your SEO program. I would personally recommend having some sort of 'share-ability' on your website whether it be a Facebook 'Like' button, Twitter 'Tweet' or something more all-encompassing like the 'ShareThis' bar.
Likewise, links from social media channels offer more value than they ever have previously.
Case and point, while I wouldn't make social media the centrifuge of my SEO efforts, I would be mindful of it and use its value to complement your current SEO activities.

From my point of view, the idea is not so much that the social shares themselves are a signal; but rather, the more your content is shared, the more likely it is to be read by influencers. It's more about getting your content in front of the eyes of people you want to visit your site, engage with your business, and also link to you. This is a great way to build natural links.

Yoast Social Accounts URL Section
Hi When you click: Social within Yoast plugin it defaults to 'Account' tab and displays a list of fields to enter your social media account urls. Sentence above list says: "To inform Google about your social profiles, we need to know their URLs. For each, pick the main account associated with this site and please enter them below" What does that mean exactly and does it effect links on the site etc or literally is just Yoast telling G ? Also if you have sub sites for different language versions (WP on Multi User setup), which in turn have their own language specific social media account versions , should you enter those urls in the sub site language version own Yoast plugin fields OR , as per "...pick the main account associated with this site and please enter them below" use the primary social account and not the language specific social account or just leave them blank ? Blogger vs wordpress from SEO perspective
Blogger is under the google umbrella and of course will be in line with google's strategic moves in the future.That includes commenting with google plus accounts and any future integrations. (google plus will HUGE in the future when it comes to SEO)currently there is no way to host blogger on your own servers, which means all your images and video are not really yours from an SEO perspective. Wordpress however does not have as much technical restrictions, but eventually it will be a major competitor to blogger. You can host it on your own servers as well. So from an SEO perspective which one is better?

Employing Pinterest for SEO gain.
Hi I wanted to see if the SEO team have had any feedback from members who have started to use Pinterest. I've had it for a month or so now and I've been adding pins every day since - (quite addictive actually). What is interesting is the gender element to the people who are following and repinning my pins and boards i.e. female. It would be interesting to understand why this the case, why is it so popular with female users. Ultimately I'm tyring to guage the benefits of employing Pinterest for SEO purposes and whether its worth keeping it in my arsenal of social tools. Custom Social Media icons: Good or bad?
Hi guys, In our never-ending search for better SEO strategies and results, our journey has led us to question the idea of creating custom social media icons for our site. We are wondering if anyone has had experience, either negative or positive, by using these icons, or if there is no difference at all? I would like to make it clear that we are only thinking about customizing the icons that lead to our Facebook page, Twitter profile, YouTube channel, etc. NOT the like/share/tweet/etc buttons. We understand the negative effects in changing those icons, but are interested in knowing if creating general icons that match our design will be a good or bad thing.
