Company is spliting up and moving to new domains, trying to keep link juice going forward
-
A company I am doing SEO work for is splitting into 3 and will be hosted on three separate domains. I am getting 2 of the 3, however, I am not getting the domain that has most links going to it.
What is the best practice to carry any link juice going to my divisions to the new domain names? Should I contact sites linking to my divisions content on the old site and ask them to link to my new sites? Should I do 301 redirects to help carry links to my new sites?
Also, I found this guide in moz http://moz.com/blog/seo-guide-how-to-properly-move-domains its from 2009, but is this still considered the best practices for moving to new domains or is there an updated guide I should be using?

There will be one main domain that will act as a landing page for the three divisions.
I am getting divisions that will be starting on a new domain name.

Hi, please clarify whether the 3 separate domains will be all new or will 2 of them that you handle be new and the other one be the old domain? That changes how you can do 301 redirects obviously (leading to more questions like if all 3 are new, what happens to the old domain? etc..)
Couple of steps to take:
- Analyse your old site thoroughly with Open Site Explorer or with other Moz (or other provider's) tools. Specifically make a list of the top 200/500/.. pages with most external links, page authority and so on. It is going to be an hefty Excel file but a breeze to put together with the help of Moz professional. Takes a couple of days or so.
- Keep the same URL structure when designing the old site, make it simpler to scan via breadcrumbs if possible.
- Do specific canonical URLs for at least the 200/500/.. most important pages in the 1st page
- Do the 301 redirects and verify them with the help of online tools.
- Notify Google Webmaster Tools. Again It is hard to give specific instructions because I do not which domains will be new and what will happen to the old.
In theory and according to Google officially setting the canonical URL should pass the external links along to the new domain:
- Consolidating link signals for the duplicate or similar content. It helps search engines to be able to consolidate the information they have for the individual URLs (such as links to them) on a single, preferred URL. This means that links from other sites to
http://example.com/dresses/cocktail?gclid=ABCD
get consolidated with links tohttp://www.example.com/dresses/green/greendress.html.

Hi Wrench,
Is it a single website or 3 seperate websites before the seperation? If you have multiple websites then you can redirect the websites so that all the link juice will be passed to the new domains. If it is a single website and if the 3 entities are seperated by folder structures. Then you can do a page by page 310 permanent redirect of the corresponding folders to the new websites if the 1st website owner allows you to do that. Then all the SEO goodies of the particular sections of the pages only will be passed to the new domains.

Are links from charities really better than 'normal' links.
Hi Guys. Just wondering about this idea that links from Charities are particularly good. I've heard people say that links from .org sites are particularly strong. But anyone can get a .org domain, it's just that charities tend to use them more often. Right? I just don't get the logic. Can anyone give more detail about this? Is it a myth? Is there quality info on this topic I can check out? We're working with several charities at the moment, and they all seem happy to blog and link to us...so I just wanted to know a little more. Isaac.

Are new pages treated similar to new domains with respect to ranking?
Hello...I'm hoping to get some advice or guidance regarding the following. My website has gone from a 30 page site about loans, to a 500 page site covering a much wider range of products such as mortgages and other more specific loan related pages. All the new pages were made live at the same time, and I've been through GWT tools to add pages with in the Google fetch and most have been indexed fine. My question is, how should I expect Google to treat all of these new pages? The site has changed massively and many of the new pages are at pages 3-4 for their key terms. Will Google treat these new pages in the same way it may a new domain, e.g. it could be potenitally a couple of months before the pages start to rank better? I appreciate that the terms are very competitive. Thanks!

Links from sites with iffy link profiles?
So the site http://www.cadenas.de/ appears to have good decent scores from the various Moz ranks, but when I check out the site in OSE there are a lot of really sketchy links that jump out, online pharmacy/drug type links. I should also add that the negative links are seemingly going to a weird blog deep in the site and only appear when I select all links to the root domain in OSE. Everything about the site appears very legitimate except for the link profile which has me nervous. Would you guys pursue a link from this site?

Link Relevance vs Link Authority ?
Hi guys, I have a quick question regarding some low quality links my site is getting. From the information in Open Site Explorer, the website Im talking about has a page authority of 16 while the domain authority is 11\. These are very low quality scores in my oppinion and Im thinking of removing them with Google Disavow Tool. The thing is that, although the domain is low quality, the links have relevance as they're in the same business sector as us. More exactly, the name of the domain is taxisavona and the company I work for is also a taxi company. So, now I`m thinking, should I disavow the link because of it's low scores or should I leave it because it is relevant to our business ? Thank you in advance! Best regards, Tiberiu Iavorenciuc

Links to main landing category page or links directly to products
I have an ecommerce website and a manufacturer is providing links directly to my website from their products pages because they do not sell directly online. What is my best linking juice power for this situation:

my.com/manufacture-A/brand1/product2
my.com/manufacture-A/brand2

Link Building for a New Blog
We are setting up a new blog and I was wondering what is the best way to build good quality links for a new website? I have been researching this quite a bit on the forums and a lot of people talk about writing good content which I agree with however no one will find that content if we are not ranking in Google for our keywords. From what I have read the following is what I should be doing Directory's Creating Link-bait (Info-graphics) PR Releases or Getting News Sites to link to us I have heard a lot of mention of using Articles sites like ezinearticles but I have also read that Post Panda that they dont have as much link juice as they once had and also I don't think that for a Blog that we should be using it as well but maybe I am wrong? Would appreciate some peoples suggestions

Link to those that link to you? Worthwhile?
We have thousands and thousands of sites that link to a domain we are working on, many with low page authority and high domain (bloggers, forum posts, etc). Has anyone experimented with linking to the pages that link to you (not from your site) but from other means in an effort to boost their quality? I'm not sure what method we would use, maybe some relevant blog comments or social votes. But curious if this could be an effective method.
