URL sequence
-
Hello,
Does the URL structural sequence matter to SEO optimisation?
For example, users are likely to enter the search term: "Business Analysis Training Courses". Though, in my experience urls typically have a reversed structure: "www.site.com/training/courses/business-analysis".
My question is, would the sequence "www.site.com/business-analysis/training/courses" have any improved value?
Thanks.

Thanks for taking the time to feedback each of you.
My site is 'new' so I am simply trying to glance ahead and set-up in a fashion that accommodates good SEO practices and future (possible) expansion e.g. additional course topic areas to avoid site wide rewrites/redirects.
From what I gather there isn't much between the two approaches. So I will move forward with: www.site.com/training-courses/business-analysis (so that in future '/project-management' and other areas can be accommodated simply).
This is based on the assumption that the folder/sub-folder structure count as keywords, and not solely the page slug? I also hear from your responses that content is king, and I should not rely on the URL to be the main contributor.
Interestingly, for me, when setting up my first Moz campaign today the word 'course' was not suggested, with other non-critical words that feature far less often being suggested instead.
Again - thanks for your insight, appreciated.

Hi Martijn,
was thinking that if the site was going to use the short phrase why not also try for the long tail;
i.e. "business analysis training courses" and "business analysis"
Perhaps you could explain?
Also the comment I made "It matters, yes, but it matters a lot less than it use to" was a Rand quote, from one of his wbf videos in which he was talking about the effects or keywords in the url. He also said that this now only contributes to rankings in 3% of cases.
Cheers, Lee

It would be a better advice in my opinion to only say that the last URL should only be used if the content on the page doesn't work and rank for itself already. Otherwise the URL has to contribute for all of it.

Instead of
www.site.com/training/courses/business-analysis
use;
www.site.com/training/courses/business-analysis-training-courses
It matters, yes, but it matters a lot less than it use to.

I never took a look at the difference, it is fact, that it is great when you have the searched words in your url structure. I often saw, that there is no need to have the correct sequence. I think it could be a bit better if you have the sequence the user is searchin for, but I would bet that changing the url structure in several cases would cost a lot of time. The benefit couldn't be that great, that I would start to do that. I never tested it, but I also don't focus that much on one search querie sequence...

Optimized URL?
Hi Mozers, We're trying to come up with an SEO friendly URL. Does it make sense to re-order primary-secondary-tumor to secondary-primary-tumor because "primary tumor" has high volumes and thus those two words should be adjacent? Any advice is appreciated! Yael

Changing URL for SEO
Hi folks, I'm a total newbie so please go easy. I've published 4 blogs on my website and am using the free Yoast plugin to guide me on my SEO. The blogs have been promoted in various places using organic and paid social. However, the more I look into SEO the more I'm realising that I did literally NO keyword research and the keywords I'm using are pretty useless. The question is this: it should be easy enough for my to change the content of the blog, the meta description etc to reflect the new keywords, but what about the URL / slug?. Is there any way to change this without causing me a massive headache or does having my new keywords in the slug even matter? Thanks, Mike.

Why doesn't Google show my site in the results when searching for my exact URL ?
I haven't done too much work with optimizing the site yet, but I was curious as to why the site doesn't even show up in any of the google results when searching on the exact URL. What could cause this behavior?

Help writing a particular URL slug
Hello, I work for an Theater news site. We've drafted an interview piece where three actors (Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom, Jr, and Karen Olivo) discuss their participation in an upcoming show (tick, tick... BOOM), which is an autobiographical precursor to Jonathan Larson's hit Broadway musical, Rent. The show is playing for five days in the New York City Center's 'Encores' musical theater series event. In the interview, the actors widely discuss Mr. Larson's impact on the theater community, who passed away suddenly in 2001. As you might imagine, the most popular keywords on Google trends are of Mr. Larson, the show name, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, a tony-winning composer. We're considering slugs that represent several permutations of the above actor + show combinations (below), but we're struggling trying to balance a slug that appropriately explains the article, uses appropriate keywords, and limit them (to a count of 5, per google's recommendation). Any suggestions? miranda-olivo-odom-inside-tick-tick-boomlin-manuel-olivo-odom-inside-tick-tick-boomtick-tick-boom-encores-interviewjonathan-larson-tick-tick-boom-at-encores

Any way to track rank of a URL for keyword BEFORE setting up in Rank Tracker?
Hello all I realize this data is probably impossible to get but thought I would take a chance and ask. Anyone know of a way to see ranking for a URL for a keyword before being setup in Rank Tracker? Would love to see how a URL moved up and down over time prior to tracking. I know its a long shot but if anyone knows its the Moz community! Have a great day people.

Are my urls too long or spammy?
Hello, what are your thoughts on these urls. I have had them like this for years, I got hit hard from Google in May last year. Do you think this contributed? Would it be beneficial for me to make them shorter? http://www.ditalia.com.au/couture-dressmakers-seamstresses-tailors-couturiers-and-fashion-design-advice/cocktail-gowns http://www.ditalia.com.au/wedding-dress-wedding-dresses-and-bridal-gowns-designed-and-made http://www.ditalia.com.au/designer-fabrics-designer-fabric-italian-material-and-french-lace/french-lace http://www.ditalia.com.au/wedding-dress-wedding-dresses-and-bridal-gowns-designed-and-made/vintage-wedding-dresses

Is there a pro tool or google service that I can use to see which sites rank for certain terms? Without having to first identify the url's?
For example I want to see the top 20 sites in order of ranking for top keywords in my industry. Without having to know in advance the url's.

Is it important to have exact keyword in your URL
I have researched exact keywords and noted a four word phrase which has fairly good numbers for exact keyword local searches a month with low competition. If I was to make it as my web address it would mean having www. (18 letters).co.uk Is it important to have the exact keyword in the URL for ranking purposes? Is an 18 letter web address either side of the www and .co.uk too long?
