Changing old style WP menu built with child pages or not?
-
Hi Mozzers,
the very old theme of my client's site doesn't support the new WP menus, so the menu structure is built in the old way, with parent and child pages.
For example the page whose url is www.site.com/rent/ is top level and the sub pages are like www.site.com/rent/cars/ or www.site.com/rent/trucks/
Also there are third generation pages like www.site.com/rent/cars/fiat500/
Since I am changing the theme, I am going to use the new WP menu system and I'd like to know if this parent/child url structure may hurt link equity propagation.
My question is: should I detach the child pages from the parents and, according to that, change the urls of the child pages from:
www.site.com/rent/cars/to
www.site.com/rent-cars/ (and of course 301 redirect them) ?
Or is it ok to leave the pages' url in the old parenting way?
What is the best practice?
Thank you very much!

How big is the site? If it's say, under a few hundred pages then you can just leave the structured URLs, and I usually prefer this for good UX and architecture. If the site is much bigger, it might be a little more complex and the specifics could affect things a little.

Thank you Robert,
I am sorry I think I didn't explain it well.
I am not changing domain, I am only changing the theme, so that I can use the "new" WP menu feature and do submenus with drag and drop in the menu editor rather than using child pages
Now, with a new theme I have the choice, so I rephrase the question:
isn't a normal sub page (www.site.com/rent-cars/) closer to the home page than a child page (www.site.com/rent/cars/)?
This second url implies in some sense more distance from the home, isn't it?
To make it simpler: let's say my home page has Page Authority 20: which one of the 2 pages will get more of this page authority? The child page (with "/" separator) or the subpage (with "-" separator)?
Usability and keyword presence in the urls won't change much (let's say the keyword is "rent cars") so here I am only focusing on link equity.
I know I might be overlooking, but if this is the case I'd like to hear from you
Thank you again!

Hello DoMiSol,
In this case, link equity will not be affected if you retain the same domains. Breaking them up and creating new routes may actually cause you some harm from a link-equity perspective so I would suggest you retain the old structure and ensure proper 301 redirect practices.
Being honest, either way works fine. It is predominantly a matter of preference and what your traffic flow is like. If you are attaining good rankings with your current propagation system, I would keep it. If you are not attaining rankings you are looking for, it might be worth shaking it up and seeing what a new domain setup does for you - however, I think this is probably the less-attractive option.
One other factor to consider is user experience - if you feel that a new setup would greatly influence customer interaction with your site (and thereby lead to greater conversions, brand awareness or reviews), then by all means, try it out.
However, all things being equal, I would retain the previous set up and make sure I crossed my T's and dotted my I's on the 301's.
Hope this helps and feel free to fire me any follow-up questions.
Rob

Magento 1.9 SEO. I have product pages with identical On Page SEO score in the 90's. Some pull up Google page 1 some won't pull up at all. I am searching for the exact title on that page.
I have a website built on Magento 1.9. There are approximately 290,000 part numbers on the site. I am sampling Google SERP results. About 20% of the keywords show up on page 1 position 5 thru 10. 80% don't show up at all. When I do a MOZ page score I get high 80's to 90's. A page score of 89 on one part # may show up on page one, An identical page score on a different part # can't be found on Google. I am searching for the exact part # in the page title. Any thoughts on what may be going on? This seems to me like a Magento SEO issue.

How do we decide which pages to index/de-index? Help for a 250k page site
At Siftery (siftery.com) we have about 250k pages, most of them reflected in our sitemap. Though after submitting a sitemap we started seeing an increase in the number of pages Google indexed, in the past few weeks progress has slowed to a crawl at about 80k pages, and in fact has been coming down very marginally. Due to the nature of the site, a lot of the pages on the site likely look very similar to search engines. We've also broken down our sitemap into an index, so we know that most of the indexation problems are coming from a particular type of page (company profiles). Given these facts below, what do you recommend we do? Should we de-index all of the pages that are not being picked up by the Google index (and are therefore likely seen as low quality)? There seems to be a school of thought that de-indexing "thin" pages improves the ranking potential of the indexed pages. We have plans for enriching and differentiating the pages that are being picked up as thin (Moz itself picks them up as 'duplicate' pages even though they're not. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences!

What is the proper way to execute 'page to page redirection'
I need to redirection every page of my website to a new url of another site I've made. I intend to add:"Redirect 301 /oldpage.html http://www.example.com/newpage.html"I will use the 301 per page to redirect every page of my site, but I'm confused that if I add:"Redirect 301 / http://mt-example.com/" it will redirect all of my pages to the homepage and ignore the URLs i have separately mentioned for redirection. Please guide me.

Should I try to change these links or no?
Hey guys, I need some advice on a link profile I'm currently working on. Our client sells a product in the hunting industry and has been around for over ten years. I just finished up classifying and looking at all of their links today and found that around half of them are sponsor links, links on "link pages," and a few directory links with almost all of them being followed. Because we are the first company to do SEO for them, I know that these aren't maliciously solicited links, but I'm worried that they may be having a negative impact on the site. Most of the links are coming from other non-competing websites in the outdoor industry which typically tends to have very antiquated sites with very antiquated practices. Essentially, I don't want to go out and try to nofollow or disavow all of these links that the website has had for a long time on other related websites if they're helping us, but I also don't want to be leaving anything up that could algorithmically be identified as spam. Below are some examples to show you what I'm referring to by the sponsor links and link resource pages. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! Why Google scrambles/change our product page titles? And descriptions too?
Here is an interesting issue we are noticing lately: Google is always more scrambling and changing the title of our product pages in the SERPs results. Here is an example: Keyword: "bach arioso sheet music". We are down at the 6th spot, and the shown title is different from what's defined inside the TITLE tag of that page. And that appears often for other keywords/product pages. Why's that? How can we control that? It is hard for us to optimize titles and test CTR and other metrics if Google is showing them differently to the users. Similar issue with the description tag: sometimes Google instead of showing to the users the description tag contents, shows part of the text taken from the page even though the searched keywords are included both in the title and the description tag, and so I can't find justification to show text taken from the page instead... it is quite difficult to understand the motivation beyond all this! Any thoughts are very welcome. Thanks! Fab.
