18,000 'Title Element is too Long' Errors
-
How detrimental is this in the overall SEO scheme of things?
Having checked 3 of our main competitors, they too seem to have similar issues...
I am trying to look at a solution but it is proving very difficult!
Thanks
Andy

This does seem like a good opportunity for you to do better than your competitors.
Obviously, that's a huge amount of pages with issues. I agree with EGOL's suggestion to remove the brand name if that's one thing making your titles too long. Otherwise, prioritize your most important pages and start there.
It's my perception that a good page title is important for SEO, but it's even MORE important because it represents a chance for you to communicate with the people who are finding your page in their search results. Give them a reason to choose your site over your competitor's - a too-long, keyword stuffed title won't do that.
-
Egol, you are right! Just love how you present your idea!
I was more into how to interpret the data from Moz (or any other tools in general).
-
In my opinion, a title tag that quickly communicates what you have on the page is very important for clickthroughs. It can also focus your optimization. How to Handle this? There are several options, all dependent upon your individual situation.
If your title tags look like this....
<title>Blue Widgets: Huge Selection and Free Shipping | MyBrandNameThatNobodyGivesAHootAbout</title>
Then I would cut the brand, but lots of people will argue with me. If your standard title tags is just a keyword melange then I would start rewriting them. If you have top rankings in all of your SERPs and people are buying stuff like mad then I would ignore the error and go out for beers.

Hi Andy,
It is important to know that Moz crawl gives you an error/notification about a specific issue, to highlight that one or more elements could influence your search rankings. All tools can do, is to highlight information for you.
The way they highlight an issue (high importance, low importance, etc.) is based on the big data they are able to analyze, and how they have experienced how these data correlates with the rankings from their data.
On the other hand having your competition having the same issue, might be a signal that it is a point on your website where you could do better than your competition.
This is how I interpret their data.
I hope this was helpful.
Gr., Keszi

Company Name in Home Page Title? If and Where?
My guess is you want to do the {title} | {company name} format as I would suspect Google gives slightly more weight to the words at the beginning of the title?  (This is assuming your company name isn't a generic word or you are specifically trying to rank your home page for your company name when it isn't ranking well already) But what about cases where you have like 5 or 6 keywords that are really important and used in the title gives you like 50 characters and your company name pushed it up to like 65 increasing the chance Google will use some other source to list the name of your home page in the search results? Obviously one can experiment, but wondering what the general consensus is - long keyword title, or longer title with company name? The company name can be included in the meta description and the domain name of the url displayed also gives the indication to the company. But maybe the algo "respects" long itles that have company name more than ones without as then it looks more like a keyword stuffing title? So many factors to consider. Yes - on page SEO isn't just about the title, but for this thread I'm just talking home page title.

All urls seem to exist (no 404 errors) but they don't.
Hello I am doing a SEO auditing for a website which only has a few pages. I have no cPanel credentials, no FTP no Wordpress admin account, just watching it from the outside. The site works, the Moz crawler didn't report any problem, I can reach every  page from the menu. The problem is that - except for the few actual pages - no matter what you type after the domain name, you always reach the home page and don't get any 404 error. I.E. Http://domain.com/oiuxyxyzbpoyob/ (there is no such a page, but i don't get 404 error, the home is displayed and the  url in the browser remains Http://domain.com/oiubpoyob/, so it's not a 301 redirect). Http://domain.com/WhatEverYouType/ (same) Could this be an important SEO issue (i.e. resulting in infinite amount of duplicate content pages )? Do you think I should require the owner to prevent this from happening? Should I look into the .htaccess file to fix it ? Thank you Mozers!

Yoast seo title question
I was referred to this plugin and have found it to be the most irritating and poorly designed plugin in the world. I want to be able to set my titles without it changing my page headers as well. For instance - If I set my title to be "This is my article name | site name" it will make my H1 tag read the same. I do not want or desire this nonsense. Why would they think this is something wise? Why would I want my site name on every single H1 tag on my site? How can I fix this? I only want my title to be my title. I want my H1 tag to remain the post/page name that I define in wordpress.

How Long Does It Take Content Strategy to Improve SEO?
After 6 months of effort with an SEO provider, the results of our campaign have been minimal. we are in the process of reevaluating our effort to cut costs and improve ROI. Â Our site is for a commercial real estate brokerage in New York City. Which of these options would have the best shot of creating results in the not too long term future: -Create a keyword matrix and optimize pages for specific terms. Maybe optimize 50 pages.

-Add content to "thin" pages. Rewrite 150-250 listing and building pages.
-Audit user interface and adjust the design of forms and pages to improve conversions.
-Link building campaign to improve the link profile of a site with not many links (most of those being of low quality). I would really like to do something about links, but have been told this will have no effect until the next "Penguin refresh". In fact I have been told the best bet is to improve user interface since it is becoming increasingly difficult to improve ranking. Any thoughts? Thanks, lan0 -
Crawl errors in GWT!
I have been seeing a large number of access denied and not found crawl errors. I have since fixed the issued causing these errors; however, I am still seeing the in webmaster tools. At first I thought the data was outdated, but the data is tracked on a daily basis! Does anyone have experience with this? Does GWT really re-crawl all those pages/links everyday to see if the errors still exist? Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

There's a website I'm working with that has a .php extension. All the pages do. What's the best practice to remove the .php extension across all pages?
Client wishes to drop the .php extension on all their pages (they've got around 2k pages). I assured them that wasn't necessary. However, in the event that I do end up doing this what's the best practices way (and easiest way) to do this? This is also a WordPress site. Thanks.

Is 404'ing a page enough to remove it from Google's index?
We set some pages to 404 status about 7 months ago, but they are still showing in Google's index (as 404's). Is there anything else I need to do to remove these?
