Should I buy a keyword rich domain to prevent competitors from buying it
-
Some people in the company I work for have suggested that we buy a keyword rich domain that matches a new product line that we're planning to release.
I've advised that this in itself is not a good idea, as we'll need to produce high quality content for that site rather than just having it exist for ranking purposes. We already have a section on our main site focussed on this product line, so I don't think having the keyword match domain would really add anything unless we worked out what we'd use this site for.
That said, I was wondering whether it might be worth buying the exact match domain anyway, in order to prevent a competitor from using it?

Excellent - thanks for your responses guys, that's a great help!

I agree with you that positioning is more about the content than having an exact match url. However, as Ryan indicates, buying the domain is low cost, so I would buy it anyway, if only to redirect it to the main domain.
This could potentially save you a lot of trouble if your boss (or higher) would type in the exact match domain only to see that it would go to one of your competitors. They usually don't know much about SEO, and for some reason a lot of them are convinced that having the exact match domain is the preferred tactic to secure a number one position...

If the product you are launching will be searched for in Google - I would buy it to protect your new product and redirect it to your new product page. Its worth the cost of registration of 1 year to see if the product will take off or you may want to use the domain in the the future.

If there's been a history of that from other competitors it's a consideration. Several companies also buy common typo domains--gooogle.com for example--partially as a user friendliness feature, partly as a competitor buffer. Domains are a low cost, so holding a few is pretty low-risk.

Is it worth keeping a decades-old domain that's merely 301 redirecting to the main domain?
Hi fellow Moz SEOs, We have a bigger client who we just did an SEO Site Audit for, and it was discovered that they have several domain names that are simply 301 redirecting to their main domain name. One of their domains in particular is decades old, and the client is asking if there is any value in keeping it (and the others), or simply leaving them as-is. Considering the domain age, does anyone have any recommendations? Much appreciated, Zack Barton

Cleaning up a Spammy Domain VS Starting Fresh with a New Domain
Hi- Can you give me your opinion please... if you look at murrayroofing.com and see the high SPAM score- and the fact that our domain has been put on some spammy sites over the years- Is it better and faster to place higher in google SERP if we create a fresh new domain? My theory is we will spin our wheels trying to get unlisted from alot of those spammy linking sites. And that it would be faster to see results using a fresh new domain rather than trying to clean up the current spammy doamin. Thanks in advance - You guys have been awesome!!

301 Pandalized Domain to Authority Domain?
Hello, If I redirect a Panda penalized domain (DA 65, bad link profile) to another authority domain (DA 35, clean link profile), will it still carry a penalty? I've heard cases where a panda penalized domain moved to a brand new domain carried the penalty.

Keyword weight in Domain Name
Hi All, I'm looking for some advice on URL structure. Our domain name includes 1/2 of many keyword strategies that we're considering. For example our domain is like, dive.com Keyword strategies that we're looking at targeting would include things like, "dive shop", "dive equipment" etc etc Are we competitive to have a structure like this? dive.com/shop/ dive.com/equipment/ Or will this structure yield stronger results? dive.com/dive-shop/ dive.com/dive-equipment/ Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks! Malcolm

Recovery during domain migration
On average, how long does it takes to recover 80% of the rankings if two high authority domains are combined without chaging any content? I totally understand that each domain is different and search engines can treat them differently but if all the steps are followed to the T what are the chances?
