Changing URIs
-
About 2 months ago, my client changed its domain—using 301 redirect—and took the hit in search results. Here's my question: If I convince the client to revert to their old URI, will that help or hurt their SEO?
Follow-up, can it hurt to change interior URIs to something that better reflects the page content?
Thanks.

Thanks for your time, Ryan. I appreciate it.

Reverting will likely further extend whatever effects they're experiencing in the time delay that goes along with a domain name change... Take a look a this post from a couple of years ago regarding site migration: http://moz.com/blog/web-site-migration-guide-tips-for-seos. From that you can likely find some missing steps or URLs along the way that would benefit from being fixed. Again, reverting is no guarantee at all that rankings will return or that they would return quickly. Best to move forward with the new site and possible fixes that relate to keeping it on it's new domain as aggressively as possible. Good luck!

Domain prefix changed, will this impact SEO?
Our web development team have changed our domain prefix from www to non www due to a server change. Our SSL certificate would not be recognised under www and would produce a substantial error message when visiting the secure parts of our website. To prevent issues with old links they have added a permanent 301 redirect from www. to non www. urls until our sitemap catches up. Would this impact our SEO efforts or would it have no impact as a redirect has been placed? Thanks

Magento URL change
We have a Magento website parked at HostGator. The site is comprised of both a PC and a mobile version. We changed the URL to a new one ... We made the domain changes in the ‘core_config_data’ (phpMyAdmin) ... We flushed the cache in the ‘File Manager’ part of cPanel (regular and mobile version) Currently we can access the http://newsite.com (on a desktop) with no problem ... We can also access http://m.newsite.com BUT… only from a desktop PC. When we try http://newsite.com from a MOBILE device, it routes to: http://m.OLDsite.com (it keeps going to the old URL) Need some help please. Thanks in advance!

GWT Change of Address Keeps Failing
Followed Google's instructions for using the Change of Address Tool in GWT to move rethinkisrael.org to www.fromthegrapevine.com. I'm getting this message, "We tried to reconfirm ownership of your old site (rethinkisrael.org) and failed. Make sure your verification token is present, and try again."Even though the site is verified, we undid the DNS change, and checked the meta verification tag. The tag is correct. And, since the site is ALREADY verified there was NO way to 'veryify' in GWT again. The message in GWT says "verification successful."We redid the DNS change, tried again to do the address change and get the same error message. Any ideas?

Changes to website haven't been crawled in over a month
We redesigned our website at http://www.aptinting.com a few months ago. We were fully expecting the crawl frequency to be very low because we had redesigned the website from a format that had been very static, and that probably has something to do with the problem we're currently having. We made some important changes to our homepage about a month ago, and the cached version of that page is still from April 2nd. Yet, whenever we create new pages, they get indexed within days. We've made a point to create lots of new blog articles and case studies to send a message to Google that the website should be crawled at a greater rate. We've also created new links to the homepage through press releases, guest blog articles, and by posting to social media, hoping that all of these things would send a message to Google saying that the homepage should be "reevaluated". However, we seem to be stuck with the April 2nd version of the homepage, which is severely lacking. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is it worth it to change old URLs to lower case?
Hi Mozzers, My site has a ton of URLs with upper case letters, such as http://www.consumerbase.com/Lawyer-Mailing-Lists.html I know upper case URLs are bad, but I am wondering if it is worth it to change old, already created pages. Should I change these URLs to all lower case and 301 redirect the old URL to the new one, or will that temporarily de-index all of these pages? Thanks!

Change in url structure - added category page
I have recently started an e-commerce website and have now changed the url structure and added another level to my category pages. So where it before was www.website.com/shirts it is now www.website.com/clothes/shirts. So I added the clothes category (just an example) before the shirt category and am now finding that the old url is still found in the search index and is still live on my site. How could this be? I use wordpress and simply change the urls in the backend. The products are still under www.website.com/product/blue-shirt-123 so they won't be affected but I suppose it now means I have duplicate category pages? So my question is: Should I 301 the the old category page (www.website.com/shirts)to the new url (www.website.com/clothes/shirts). And how can the old url still be live on my site? If this was a bit unclear, please let me know. Appreciate your replies!

My homepage+key pages have dropped 40+ positions after implementing redirects and canonical changes. HELP!
Hi SEOMozers, I work for a web based nonprofit at www.tisbest.org. I had a professional contact recommend that we work on our redirects to our homepage because we were losing valuable rank benefit. This combined with getting sick of seeing our weekly SEOMoz crawl reports show 304 duplicate page and title errors for months. No one could seem to figure out what was happening (we think it had to do with session stuff; we were seeing several versions of each page showing the following: www.tisbest.org/default.aspx/(random character string) My developer and I read a bunch of articles and started making changes 10 days ago: He setup 301 redirects from http://tisbest.org to http://www.tisbest.org. (set the canonical domain). We did a redirect from http://www.tisbest.org/default.aspx to root with "/". I set the canonical setting to www.tisbest.org in our webmaster tools. In our web config (we're running in asp.net), we changed our session detection from auto-detect then saw some session funkiness so we changed it back. Though we do think the character strings we were seeing were session GUID. He forced lower case URL’s to reduce duplicate page content/titles. I got my weekly crawl report 9 days ago and we had dropped from 340 duplicate page title and page content errors went to one. We went nuts and felt like the kings of SEO. Then, yesterday (9/28), the SEO grim reaper came knocking when I received my weekly SEOMoz ranking report. It said we had dropped 40+ spots for all of 9 of our keywords. Sure enough, I searched our keywords and our website was gone. Then I searched our company name, tisbest, and only a few of our pages show but not the homepage. I searched for our URL www.tisbest.org, and I originally got the expanded view (with 8 links to various webpages - can't remember what this view is called) but now, today (Saturday), the expanded view is gone from this search result. Also, when I run the On Page Report card for our homepage, I get the following error message with no results: "We were unable to grade that page. The page did not load. Curl::Err::TooManyRedirectsError: Number of redirects hit maximum amount." When I run the Open Site explorer report, I get this message at the top: Oh Hey! It looks like that URL redirects to www.tisbest.org/?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1. Would you like to see data for <a class="clickable redirects">that URL instead</a>?" If I go to the report for the that report's page, it says that "No information is available for that URL." Just tonight (night of 9/29), our developer added the rel="canonical" href="http://www.tisbest.org" /> to our homepage tonight to see if that would help. We did not do that originally. In our Google Webmaster tools, I am seeing the number of URL Error - Not Followed has sky rocked. I have attached a screen capture to this thread. There are also a large number of URL Errors - Not Found errors as well. I did some research tonight and downloaded and ran Screaming Frog SEO Crawler. I have attached a screen capture below with this report and a couple of questions I sent our developer that may be helpful to you. Also, not sure if this is relevant, we use a master page that all of our pages inherit from so all of our pages get the same meta-data: name="keywords" content="charitable gift card, charitable gift certificate, non profit gift card, charity donation, giftcard, charity gift card, donation gift card, donation gift, charity gift, animal gift card, animal gift, environmental gift card, environmental gift, humanitarian gift card, humanitarian gift, christian gift card, christian gift, catholic gift card, catholic gift, religious gift card, religious gift" />id="ctl00_metaDescription" name="description" content="Award winning Charity Gift Card, for over 250 premier charities. A customized donation gift that makes the world better. TisBest is BBB Accredited." />name="google-site-verification" content="EfJIhN3h2SVSXdSpUbfceBVw2q6zrGX8rRQhdNZ1xY8" /><title></span><span> </span></p> <p>Can anyone help me/us identify the issue that obliterated our rankings? I am happy to give an information needed. Thank you! Google Indexed URLs for Terms Have Changed Causing Huge SERP Drop
We haven't made any significant changes to our website, however the pages that google has indexed for our critical keywords have changed to pages that have caused our SERP to drop dramatically for those pages. In some cases, the changes make no sense at all. For example, one of our terms that used to be indexed to our homepage is now indexed to a dead category page that has nothing on it. One of our biggest terms, where we were 9th, changed and is now indexed to our FAQ. As a result, we now rank 44th. This is having a MAJOR impact on our business so any help on why this sudden change happened and what we can do to combat it is greatly appreciated.
