Unsure about main menu structure on a big magazine site
-
We've got a well-established Wordpress magazine-type site with over 3000 posts and quite a lot of categories (100) and tags (117). These categories are needed as we write about quite a diverse subject, but I've been having a look at our current menu setup (megaMenu type affair with a lot of links) and I was wondering whether it's worth moving to a simpler/more streamlined main navigation and showing the sub menu items in a different way. The reason I say this is most cats/tags are used in the main menu which is a lot, and that's before any on page links are taken into consideration.
I've also been looking at the analytics and seeing what the most popular cats/tags are - Do we want to concentrate on those only, or from a usability perspective should we give users as many options to find what they may be looking for instead?
Would appreciate some help to get my head round this

The main menu structure is where it would be important. Does your layout now have a menu with 100 links?
If your hundred categories can be sorted into five or ten more general categories with other categories under those, it would make navigation easier.
You can still keep all of your categories as first level under the domain in the URL, even if they are drop-downs (or however you want to do it) under an over-category.
If the point is to get away from so many links in the header, even if they are not immediately visible, then the question is how important are all the categories. Can some be consolidated?

Hi Linda, yes we do have a lot
Do you mean in the main menu structure or the actual categories/tags structure in wordpress that has parent and child categories?
Thanks,
James

It sounds like you have quite a lot of categories! Can any of the categories become the main categories and other categories sub-categories beneath them?

Is it possible to rank a second site, for my buisness, for the same location?
I have an insurance agency, and recently set up a new site, specifically for personal lines insurance. My question is; Is it worth trying to rank this site, by using backlinks and unique content? It will have the same address, and location as my main site. I'm also concerned Google may frown on that.. Any input appreciated.

E-commerce canonicals on other sites
Hi, I have a client with a new e-commerce site which is poorly ranked. Besides his e-commerce, he offers his products in a local site which very similar to Amazon. The description and HTML structure of his products, is the same on both pages. What do you think? Should I add canonical tags to the Amazon-like site? Or do I just need to change both contents to avoid duplication?

Keyword Domain URL structure
Hello all, We have a domain with one of the primary keyword within the domain itself (audisite) and reading through some of the topics, having a keyword within the domain itself seems to be not as significant as we had assumed. We currently have a URL strucuture ( http://audisite.co.uk/new-audi/a4 ) which we were thinking of modifying to something like audisite.co.uk/a4 based on the premise that the 'audi' keyword is already in the domain itself. Also in terms of URL optimization, which of these will be the most effective URL (if the content is exactly the same). Or is my whole approach incorrect to URL optimization fundamentally incorrect? /a4 /new-audi-a4 /new/audi-a4 /new-audi/a4 /new/audi/a4 I will be very grateful for any advice/suggestions/pointers. Thank you very much for your time.

Site-wide/Blogroll Anchor Text Linking
I have some blogs that I own with 10,000+ indexed pages of content. I have wondered for sometime if adding anchor text links for my clients on relevant blogs would be helpful or harmful. I realize that having an anchor text link on ONE article page in context is better than 10,000 anchor text links on my blog roll or footer, but I have been reluctant to use this strategy due to the bad press site wide and blogroll links have gotten, What has been YOUR experience with this method?

Are link exchanges bad for SEO these days? Also, is adding my site to free yet relevent directory sites a bad idea?
I operate a computer services company in Eugene, Oregon called "Eugene Computer Geeks". We do a lot of web design, and need incoming links to my site very badly. Lately I've been asking clients if they would link to me, but they almost always ask for a link in return. If we exchange links, does Google penalize my site? Would the incoming link be better for SEO if I'm not linking back to the other site? ALSO Is it possible that manually submitting my site to free, yet relevant web directories would hurt my rankings? It's not a big deal to me if it doesn't help my rankings, as I see a benefit to having my site listed, but wanted to make sure there wasn't a chance that it would hurt my rankings. As far as I know all the directories are free from SPAM, porn, warez, or anything like that. Thanks!
