Do the terms in a website url drive search hits
-
I've tried to do a search on a few key words that I knew was on my landing page and I couldn't get Google to find it. So I thought maybe I needed to change my url to reflect a few the terms.
-
Header 1.
It's the main heading on the page. On the page you're referencing, the H1 tag contains "We Do Hadoop in the Cloud". Your H1 should contain the keyword phrase you're trying to rank for. There should only be 1 H1 on the page.
-
Cool.
Well take a look at Chapter 4, on-page optimization for some tips as to why that page might not be jumping out in search results. Neither keyword phrase - "microsoft hybrid" or "hadoop hybrid" - appears in all the right places. That's the place to start. Hortonworks has good domain authority (74).
-
Forgive my newness but what does H1 stand for?
-
Thanks Donna. Yes, I am a newbee! Thank you for the pointers. The site I was trying to find using my mobile device was http://hortonworks.com/partners/microsoft-hybrid/
I used microsoft hybrid and hadoop hybrid as initial tries.

Thanks John. Yes, it is the bit after the ".com". I'm not necessarily trying to skew it, I'm trying to at least make it somewhat easy to find. I always have the url bookmarked on my laptop but when I went to find the site on my phone, it wasn't easily coming up. Thanks again!

Your question is "do the terms in a website url drive search hits". The answer is yes, in part.
As John Rooney says, "There are all kinds of reasons why your landing pages may not be ranking for your keywords", more than 200 of them according to Google spokesperson Matt Cutts. (See time stamp 1:08). Without knowing which page you're referencing it's hard to offer an opinion as to why you might not be able to find your page in Google search results.
I suggest you start with the Moz Beginners Guide to SEO. I apologize if I've incorrectly assumed you're new to SEO. I'm basing that on the nature of your question and the fact that your profile states you just recently joined the community.
If you have more, or more specific questions after that, please come back and ask again. There are lots of experienced folks that participate on this forum that can help you.

From my experience and reading from others both on Moz and in general they typically say to make sure your H1 matches closely to your url path so, if I am on the contacts page my H1 should be contacts. As far as if it ranks you better I believe it will come down to your content on your page and how well it represents the key word you are trying to optimize for.

Hi Audrey,
There are all kinds of reasons why your landing pages may not be ranking for your keywords. When you say 'change my url' do you mean change the domain of the website (the bit in between the www. and the .com) or the part after the .com (.com/mylandingpage)?
Having the keywords in the the subdomain (the bit after the .com) can help, to a point, but as far as I'm aware having an exact match domain if that isn't the name of your business is a bit of a no-no nowadays.

Website crawl error
Hi all, When I try to crawl a website, I got next error message: "java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Illegal cookie name" For the moment, I found next explanation: The errors indicate that one of the web servers within the same cookie domain as the server is setting a cookie for your domain with the name "path", as well as another cookie with the name "domain" Does anyone has experience with this problem, knows what it means and knows how to solve it? Thanks in advance! Jens

Redirect our www.website.com to website. Com/target-keyword
Dear moz community I have been analyzing the websites that rank in top 20 for our target keywords. All of the top 20 sites except us have their websites re directing to websites.com/target keyword. This is due to probably because they have multiple city's and one of the target keywords term is cityname + word. My question is and idea - make a 301 to our www.website.com to /city-keyword and start linking to that page with new links. Would that bring any benefit? Seems that it's a very strong ranking signal. Any threats that I must take into account? We currently rank as #9

How to Handle Website Merge?
We are a law firm and have another law firm merging into ours. Our branding will remain the same, but I am trying to figure out how to best handle their website transition. Should we link it to ours (although their PR & page authority are not significant) or should I map each page to ours with similar content with a redirect? MY main concerns are not damaging our website's SEO by doing something search engine's would frown on and also to try to take advantage of any organic traffic or referral traffic. Or maybe some combination - link homepage with added verbage that attorney is now with our firm and a link and redirect the sub-pages? I look forward to thoughts from anyone who might have experience with this type to issue. Thanks in advance! JulieHow t

Cached version of website
Hi, Upon checking the text cache view of our home page, I noticed the mobile menu links are also coming in text format which looks weird. Please see: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:indialetsplay.com&biw=1366&bih=638&noj=1&strip=1 Our coder told us that he has created separate menu i.e. one version for the desktop and one for the mobile version. Anyway, the reason the coder created a different menu for mobile in order to support the design requirements. Does the duplicating the menu good for on page SEO? Give the best solution for handling it.

Which URL would you choose?
1 – www.company.com/subfolder/subfolder/keyword-keyword-product (I’m able to keyword match with this url) or 2. www.company.com/subfolder/subfolder/product (no url keyword match) What would you choose? A url which is "short" but still relevant, or, a url which is more descriptive allowing “keyword” match? Be great to get your feedback guys. Many thanks Gary

Blog separate from Website
One of my clients has a well established website, and a well established blog - each with its own domain. Is there any way to move the blog to his website domain without losing the SEO and links that he has built up over time?

Website Down
Hello guys, My website hasn't been reachable for couple of hours today and I can't really understand why as no links have been built, all the best practices have been followed regarding on page optimization. I also checked google webmaster tools and there are no warning messages, crawl problems or anything so I don't understand why this has happened. Now for some reason the website is up and running again.
