New Google Update on 21st April
-
Hi
We all know that the mobile update is coming on the 21st April and if your site isnt mobile friendly in Googles eye you will be removed from the mobile index.
Will this affect tablets.
Most of our pages are mobile friendly but there are a few which arent. However these are tablet friendly.
I havent heard Google mention about tablet rankings.
Thanks
Andy

Hi
Gary illyes from Google confirmed today at BrightonSEO that its just mobile that will be affected - tablet rankings WILL not be affected.
He also confirmed this wont in the April 21st update it wont affect Google Business listings.
Thought I would let you all know.
Thanks
Andy

Damn. I have been proven wrong. Apologies!

Hi Andy-Halliday,
Now Google confirms that "Google Mobile-Friendly Algorithm Will Not Impact Tablet Searches".

hmmmmmm, ok!
Me: Does Google new update for tablets and mobiles, Or just mobiles only?
John Mueller: Smartphones. If it works there, it'll generally also work on tablets anyway.

Hi Andy,
This is a great question for the thread Dr. Pete started at http://moz.com/community/q/google-s-mobile-update-what-we-know-so-far-updated-3-25.

In Analytics (Audience/Mobile/Overview) it shows 3 Device Categories: Desktops, Mobile (phones) and Tablets. This is true but when you look at Audience/Mobile/Devices, the column Mobile Device Info shows all tablets and mobile phones grouped together (!)
Also in Adwords - when you write an ad copy for mobile (devices) it will be shown on both mobile phones and tablets, ad copy for desktops will be shown on desktops and laptops.
WMT doesn't distinguish between tablets and mobile phones at all, they are all mobile devices.
This is what I meant by grouping them together, not that you can turn on reporting for each device category separately. You could turn on reporting for pretty much anything you want in Analytics so this is really not an argument.
I'm pretty certain (99.9%) this is the case Andy and you should make sure both mobile phone and tablet versions of your site are prepared before 21st April.
-
So basically we are unsure and will have to wait until 21st April to find out.
Thanks for everyones input, been very useful and informative

I understand that tablets are mobile devices, all I am saying is that Google sees them differently. The reporting in Analytics, AdWords, and GWT separates Tablets and Mobile. I don't understand it either, but that is the way the cookie crumbles. I am not saying I understand it or that it makes sense, but there is a small separation for some reason.
-
Monica tablets ARE mobile devices! Tablets and mobile phones use the same mobile operating systems and mobile versions of browsers. Also all their tools including Adwords, Analytics and WMT put tablets and mobile phones in the same group - mobile devices so I can't see any reason why they would treat them differently (and have different sets of search results for each?? perhaps I'm wrong but it makes no sense to me!).
I admit I also believe this update will affect desktop search results to some degree but Google certainly claims otherwise. We will just have to wait and see.
-
Tablets are handled slightly differently from Mobile devices. It is not a fair assumption that they will be affected the same as mobile devices.
There is heavy debate on the effects of this update on desktop searches. My theory is that this update cannot exclude desktop search results without there being a mobile index. I believe sites that are responsive will see the greatest benefit of this update.
-
Mobile Friendly will show on all pages that are mobile friendly, whether it is a desktop search or a mobile search. If you are forcing customers to your desktop version for a better user experience I believe that is the right way to do it. As long as you have a mobile version available and Google can see it I think you will be fine. Have you used the developers Mobile friendly tool yet? It could help answer your questions on a page by page basis. I don't know how tablets will be affected by this update as it is specifically targeted to mobile devices.
-
Tablets and mobile phones are both mobile devices and this update will affect them both. What Rand and Barry are discussing on Twitter is whether it will also affect desktop results, so nothing to do with tablets.
-
HI
Thanks for everyones responses - however we have a m. site, but on certain tablets we force people onto the desktop version for a better user experience.
However when I do a search on the ipad I don't see 'Mobile-friendly' labels.
Can anyone confirm if mobile rankings on tablets are part of the mobile index or desktop index.
Thanks
Andy

Hi,
No what I know that is It is for mobile only according to Google source. There is nothing in public domain so far whether it would affect on desktop site search/Tablet or If affect how would it affect.
I am sharing Google's Zineb Ait Bahajji reply on Rand Fishkin & Barry Schwart's similar question. Please check image.
Thanks

Early days I spoke with some friends from Google and they have three specific requirements. If any website don't have any of these requirements, it will be removed from the mobile index.
- Responsive.
- redirect to the mobile version of the site. (ex, from site.com to m.site.com)
- The site made only for mobile users.
It doesn't matter if the user uses mobile or tablet because in both he/she will browse Google mobile search on the device.

Missing Google verification
I just went to check my client sites in Google search console and noticed a whole bunch of them no longer 'verified'. They were all previously verified. Why would they suddenly change status to 'not verified'? Does this affect anything (eg. search analytics data flowing through to GA)? Does this mean I have to verify all over again?

Google search results
I have been doing some searches on google to see where my new site shows up, I started using the search words "graphic design firm st. louis" as a gauge, because my title is St. Louis Missouri Graphic Design Firm. I showed up on about page 5 to start , if I include the word "firm" and a few pages further back if I just search "graphic design st. louis", without the word firm. It seemed i was slowly moving up pages with both searches and then a few days ago I jumped to page 1 for search "graphic design firm st. louis" the thing is it doesnt show up at all now if i search "graphic design st. louis" without the word firm. what would cause the one search to jump so high while the other one dissapeared completely?? and what can i do? my keyword density is same for both , any ideas.

Google and JavaScript

Any opinions on this?

How long for new pages to rank
Hi Guys, Our website has some really good serps for our established keyword phrases some of which are quite competitive. We recently acquired and have begun selling some new brands through our online shop and launched new pages for these brands around 2 months ago. They are quite competitive ("merrell shoes" and "timberland boots" for example in google.co.uk) terms. Do you think we should get some keyword rich links built into these new pages from external sites such as blogs - or is there chances of ranking well driven more off our overall site authority/link profile? In other peoples experience, what is a typical realistic timeframe to start getting meaningful serps on new pages/keyword phrases (I know that is hard to answer - but ball parks figures appreciated). Thank you everyone in advance. Kind Regards (and happy thanksgiving to our US friends)

Custom Attributes in Google Places
Hi Guys I'm looking for some clarity of what I can and can't add to the custom attribute fields in a Google Places listing. From my understanding, you can add additional information about your services, but not what those services are. The issue I'm trying to resolve is that a client of mine offers far more than the 5 services/ category options Places allow. They are a home services company, covering all sorts from plumbing, painting and decorating, through to extensions etc. They have about 25 different services. At the moment I'm restricted to just getting rankings for 5 services (correlated to the categories in Places), when I'd like to rank locally for them all. As Google is showing local results for most search queries related to their services whether those searches are geographically modified or not, I'm in a position where even if I am ranking top 5 organically for the terms, I'm still on bottom of page 1, or top of page 2. Would it be wise to add these additional services to the custom attributes section of the Places listing, or would this set off the potential for a listing suspension? Any ideas how to combat this problem would be very welcome.

How do I get rid of all the 404 errors in google webmaster tools after building a new website under the same domiain
I recently launched my new website under the same domain as the old one. I did all the important 301 redirects but it seems like every url that was in google index is still their but now with a 404 error code. How can I get rid of this problem? For example if you google my company name 'romancing diamonds' half the link under the name are 404 errors. Look at my webmaster tools and you'll see the same thing. Is their anyway to remove all those previous url's from google's indexes and start anew? Shawn

Panda Update - Challenge!
I met with a new client last week. They were very negatively impacted by the Panda update. Initially I thought the reason was pretty straight-forward and had to do with duplicate content. After my meeting with the developer, I'm stumped and I'd appreciate any ideas. Here are a few details to give you some background. The site is a very nice looking (2.0) website with good content. Basically they sell fonts. That's why I thought there could be some duplicate content issues. The developer assured me that the product detail pages are unique and he has the rel=canonical tag properly in place. I don't see any issues with the code, the content is good (not shallow), there's no advertising on the site, XML sitemap is up to date, Google webmaster indicates that the site is getting crawled with no issues. The only thing I can come up with is that it is either: Something off-page related to links or Related to the font descriptions - maybe they are getting copied and pasted from other sites...and they don't look like unique content to Google. If anyone has ideas or would like more info to help please send me a message. I greatly appreciate any feedback. Thank you, friends! LHC
