How to stop crawls for product review pages? Volusion site
-
Hi guys, I have a new Volusion website. the template we are using has its own product review page for EVERY product i sell (1500+) When a customer purchases a product a week later they receive a link back to review the product. This link sends them to my site, but its own individual page strictly for reviewing the product. (As oppose to a page like amazon, where you review the product on the same page as the actual listing.)
**This is creating countless "duplicate content" and missing "title" errors. What is the most effective way to block a bot from crawling all these pages? Via robots txt.? a meta tag? **
Here's the catch, i do not have access to every individual review page, so i think it will need to be blocked by a robot txt file? What code will i need to implement? i need to do this on my admin side for the site? Do i also have to do something on the Google analytics side to tell google about the crawl block?
Note: the individual URLs for these pages end with: *****.com/ReviewNew.asp?ProductCode=458VB
Can i create a block for all url's that end with /ReviewNew.asp etc. etc.?
Thanks! Pardon my ignorance. Learning slowly, loving MOZ community

No you should be fine

thanks. you say "update on 4/21" you're talking about googles update requiring more mobile friendly sites? My volusion template has its own mobile version. It is not a responsive template. So i should not be affected correct?

Parameters are good for pages that are a result of a search or sort. I guess it isn't necessary really, I am just a little ocd about that kind of stuff. The parameters in WMT basically tell google that these things might appear in the URL, and then you can the bot to ignore it or let GoogleBot decide how to read the URL.
The mobile site is not the same as a responsive design and on of the main reasons I left Volusion. The mobile site will get you through the update on 4/21, but if possible you should ask them for a responsive site. Just call the support number, or your account manager and ask.

ive had the following in my robots.txt file. Do i need to add the astrisk like you have posted above?
Currently in my robot.txt:
User-agent:*
Disallow: /reviews.asp/User-agent:*
Disallow: /reviewnew.asp/ -
Thanks monica, can you elaborate a bit more on the webmaster tools parameter? what specifically does adding a parameter like that do? You did that as a backup in case the robot txt file was not working? we do have a mobile version enabled which came with our template. Ill keep an eye out for the 404's. where do i check for a responsive template? Ours is one of their premium templates so its possible we are already on a responsive one? Can you clarify what responsive template means?
thanks.

I did that in my Volusion store. I also added ReviewNew.asp?ProductCode= as a parameter in Google Webmaster Tools. Do you have an enabled mobile site as well? If you do there are several 404 errors that you will start to see from there. Make sure you are adding parameters accordingly. I am not sure if Volusion has started offering their responsive templates yet, but if they have I would see if you can implement that over the mobile site.

Hi ,
Yes you can block such URL by using below code in robots.txt file.

Advice on improving ecommerce product detail pages to rank better in google search results.
Hi all, I run an ecommerce website, not a great ranked site, however i want to try and improve the product detail pages. To do this, i am first going to focus on 1 page (this one: http://goo.gl/eS62SU) If i type the product code directly into google.co.uk search i am on the 8th page (see https://www.google.co.uk/#q=hac-hfw2220r-z&start=70) which is a bit poor to say the least. I see this kind of thing for a lot of my products. Hence, i am going to see if over the next month or two i can get this one page moving up the rankings purely with on page optimisation. I would like to ask a couple of things: 1. Is there anything that jumps out at you as to why that product detail page could NOT ever rank well, i.e some code / set up of page etc that prevents google ranking it 2. Any advice you could give that might improve that page in rankings for its product code. FYI - I can not change the dynamic URL, I only have control over such things as product name / summary / features / spec etc any advice welcome

Is adding reviews to your site using schema structured data markup considered duplicating content?
A client of mine whats to add reviews from other sites such as Judys Book and Yahoo to their site. (Yes the actual content of what was posted in the review. They are proud of what their clients are saying). I am not sure if using schema mark up and including the review body on the clients web site was safe or would it be considered duplicate content? Is there a "good practice" for this? Any assistance or suggestions are welcomed. Thanks!

How can you get the right site links for your site?
Hello all, I have been trying to get Google to list relevant site links for my site when you type in our brand name, Loco2 or for when Loco2 comes up in a search result. Different things come up when you search Loco2 and Loco 2. We would like site links to look like how they do when you search Loco 2. However Loco2 is our brand name, NOT Loco 2. Does anyone know why Google is doing this and whether we can influence results? We have done as much as possible via Google webmaster, in terms of specifying the links we DO NOT want Google to list for Loco2. However, when you search "Loco2", results only show simple site links. Ideally what we want is: Loco2 to be recognised as the brand NOT Loco 2 The same results (substantial, identical) for Loco2 as for Loco 2 (think o2 and o 2) For the site links to reflect the main pages of our site (Times & Tickets, Engine Room forum etc.) Many thanks in advance! How many pages should my site have?
Right now I think I only have 36. What is a good amount of pages to have? Any ideas on ways to add relevant pages to my site? I was thinking about starting a message board. Also, I have a free tech support chat room, and was thinking about posting the logs somewhere on the site. Does that sound like a good idea? Thanks.

What's the best format for a e-commerce URL product page
We have over 2000 non branded experiences and activities sold through our website. The website is having a face lift with the a new look and a stronger focus on SEO. As part of this, I am keen to establish what the best practice is for product based URLs. I've researched the market and come up with a few alternatives that are used: domain/category/subcategory/activity_name domain/activity_name/category/subcategory/activity_reference domain/generic_term/activity_reference/activity_name domain/category/activity_location/activity_name Activities are location based but the location can change (say once every 2 years). Activity names, category, subcategory and activity_reference rarely change. Are there any thoughts/ research on the best method? (If there is one) Many thanks in advance for your insights.
