Re-writing articles, how does this effect SEO?

Hi there,
I noticed a competitor had re-created a couple of articles I wrote, but they made reference back to me in the article, can in anyway possible myself or their site be penalised for duplicate content? The article isn't completely copied word for word, however it is definitely shows some similarity.
Any advice around this?

I agree with Jonathan If the site is decent then there is no problem to get links from there. That would be great for you.

Thats such a great idea Jonathan, yes I will to the re-tweaking mine to make it even more unique and better then the last one to keep the link, the site that wrote the content have great authority!

If the link is from a decent site (i.e. not spammy \ black hat) and you want the link, normally what I do is just accept it knowing Google is sensible enough to know you are the original source from the backlink. However, what I also do is take the opportunity to update my own content seeing as someone else is now competing with your article. Just make your article better \ more unique, and it is a win win from your point of view.
If they have blatently copied just submit a GOogle DMCA request.

Is it reasonable to not give an SEO access to our CMS?
A client (we designed their website) recently employed an SEO who required FTP access or access to the CMS. We told the client they would need to take full responsibility for any updates the SEO carried out, otherwise, the SEO could send over the changes and we would put them in at no extra cost to the client. The client didn't want to take responsibility and denied the SEO access to the CMS, and told the SEO to send over the completed work for us to put into the site. The SEO was not happy with this arrangement, and didn't seem to understand that we needed to trust him before access was would be given at a future date. Other SEO's have never had a problem with this arrangement, but this SEO claimed what they do is secret and for no one else to see. SEO want's to proceed, client doesn't want to proceed, we are happy to update the website with the client's approval. This particular client has a reputation for backing out of things. Also from the initial client, SEO contact the SEO was ready to update the website within 24 hours. Are we being unreasonable?

Is there a Step by Step Online Tutorial for SEOing?
Hi People I know this sounds like a real dumb question, but hey! I thought I would ask. I am a newbie, and after continuously spending $165.00/day for my PPC adwords campaign for the last 5 years, I MUST get my site naturally ranked higher. So as a newbie; yet understanding the basic principles about SEOing, I searched High and Low for an accredited course, an educational programme or anything that looked structured, and had a distinct step by step structure, and to my amazement I couldn't find much. I did find Dan Thiess' online guide, the SEOMOZ guide, and a few other bits n pieces. It appears that SEO learning is all over the place. I couldn't find any courses at the local universities either! So I thought...well what does it take to become an SEO consultant if there's no real formal qualification as such? And my answer was...Experience and proof of experience! That is, a consultant of who has been around for quite a few years and can prove to potential customers that ... hey you see this website www.????.com notice how it's ranked #1 ? That's because of me! So I thought, I would post this question to the forum and 1. See if there is some formidable training course with a valued and recognised qualification upon completion? 2. If I am able to work for a consultant at no charge to them at all in exchange for their knowledge. I have a wealth of experience in business and people management, and Yes I do have some Web Development and IT experience. But I know to some consultants this is a big ask, so I thought I would put it out there! (you never know until you ask.) In the meantime if anyone could possibly guide for a step by step program...that would be greatly appreciated. Cheers George

Seo is dead?
Hi there, I see a lot of conversations about the term "seo is dead" because some people speak that seo are dead because of google plus and facebook. Is it true? What do you think? What do you think that is the future of our business? We will stay uneployed or we still continue to work? Me personally I hate facebook. Is just so much stupid (like most of people, I guess thats why is so popular) but what about google plus? Is a serious and worthy social profile.This will kill us? Me I think search msrketing,seo will live for long time yet,Me personally and my friends NEVER EVER CLICK on Facebook ads(if we do it , is just curiosity, and after we never visit again that page,this guys what I was reading their articles before they said that they see a lot of traffick from facebook.me also but the taffic from facebook dont do nothing,even in adsense they dont click on my sites,not to convert to buyers).I have 20 close friends and none of them cares what kind of content they find from facebook.Is our mentality (I am from CYprus)? Or is just a fact?That facebook ads are just some crap? Or general the acebook is a crap?Me i think that is.Is made for some people who are boaring and need something to kill time.so the traffick what you get is some boaring people who dont care about nothing, just some more things to watch and comment with their friends.So practically you have them on the site and after BAM, new hot site so bye bye.Never visit again your site.Why is so much importand?Their likes etc?The difference with google adsense is that all from our company are clicking on the ads and on the results. (much more on the results, because we think that is the best.Including me that I know that SERP can be manipulated.But we still prefer that.Why all speak about that SEO are dead? Are paid from facebook? WTF? Why I never hear somebody from SEOMOZ to say this?My result is that they are some bunch of I@@@TS and they dont know what they speak or are on the other side.I am sorry for my bad english but like this I can express my fealings.If you dont understand something please ask.
