Mobile SERPs
-
Morning Mozzers,
Please can someone tell me if Mobile SERPs are different to desktop? Do they have a separate algorithm?
Mobile makes up 50% of my sites traffic and I want to make sure I am visible on all devices.
Any articles welcomed.
Kind regards
Ben, London

Thank you Jonathan, I had read some articles on this "significant" change.
My current website is NOT mobile responsive, however we are launching a new fully responsive website in mid-May so hopefully we will not fall of mobile SERPs for too long.

On the 21st April Google is updating its mobile algorithm so that any non-mobile friendly sites will be actively penalised in the mobile serps.
You will want to check the mobile usability section in your webmaster tools, and also here: https://www.google.co.uk/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/
I understand that the penalty is either on or off, so either your site is completely mobile friendly or it isn't.

Hi Ben,
Yes Mobile SERPs are different to desktop. Is it different only because its mobile vs desktop? Nope
SERPs are also influenced by your previous searches and a bunch of other things. So mobile serps can easily be different from desktop serps. Of course results may vary depending on industry & keyword.
Let's not forget that the serp layout is different since mobile serps usually cram everything into one column (adwords, map, etc) so ranking #3 can be much better value on a desktop serp vs a mobile serp that has extra things above your #3 ranking.
You can also read this article for more info @ http://moz.com/blog/why-mobile-matters-now
Hope this helps
Thanks

Google asking questions in SERPs
I just did s search for Hayley Kiyoko, and Google asked me which song is my favourite from her new album. Is this a new thing? I've never asked Google a question before and had it ask me something back, other than "did you mean... (the correct spelling for what I was looking for)?" u6qYnwq.png

Safari and IE killing our mobile ranking
My client's website does fairly well on mobile in a Google Search. So one day, my client is in a staff meeting and everyone does on search on their phones. The client’s website is nowhere on the 1st three pages. I get a call asking why. I tell the client that Google has maybe as high as 90% market share on mobile. Of course, their phones have the factory installed Safari and IE. Client says lots of people don’t change the factory settings on mobile . Question: How do we rate higher on lesser search engines?

Less relevant/not optimized competitor sites ranking higher in SERPs?
Has anyone else noticed their rank positions falling to competitor sites that aren't optimized and are less relevant? I've noticed that we've lost some rankings or have dropped over the past few weeks and the competitor pages that have replaced us haven't been optimized, aren't as relevant, and it doesn't look like there has been any updates (looking through archived versions). For example, their main "shoes" gallery is ranking for more specific shoe types, like "sandals", and "sandals" isn't even mentioned in their metadata and they have no on-page copy. Their DA is slightly higher, but our sites have a denser link profile (although, yes, I do need to go through and see what kind of links, exactly, we've gained). Has anyone else seen this happen recently, or have any ideas of why or what we could do to get our rank positions back? My main initiatives have been to create and implement fresh on-page copy, metadata, and manage 404s/301 redirects, but I'm thinking this issue is beyond a quick copywriting tweak.

Big change to title tags in SERPs for me, anyone else?
Beginning today, when I search in incognito mode, Google is giving me extremely limited titles, and not really going off of the title tag. The results are horrible for users, and make me nervous as an SEO. Image attached below: wGG7QRp

Does Bing Support same sitemap for full site, mobile, and images?
We have 1 sitemap for our desktop site, mobile site, and images. This works for Google, but I'm not sure if it's supported by Bing or if they require separate sitemaps. Anyone know?

Interesting SERP trend I'm observing
I know Google has been favoring brands a big names lately, but I'm seeing something a bit more alarming Our company offers custom embroidered patches, and through keyword and search research I have discovered that almost all searches for "embroidered patches" are by people who need embroidered patches and are looking to purchase them, or learn more about the process of purchasing them. The SERPs for this term used to be all embroidered patch companies such as ours. In the past month: We've been outranked by a page on Amazon that's fairly irrelevant. An equally irrelevant ebay page has emerged The Wikipedia page for "embroidered patch" is now number seven. This has pushed three other embroidered patch companies off the first page (not that I'm complaining because it wasn't our company . . . yet). My question is, has anyone else noticed something similar happening, where large sites are gaining ground, in spite of the fact that they have low relevance to the search term?

How to get bullet snippets SERPs
http://insidesearch.blogspot.com/2011/08/new-snippets-for-list-pages.html I read this post and have been seeing a lot of results with this feature, but can't figure out exactly why some results get them and others dont. of the results I've seen, many have information in lists or tables (as the article suggests), but some simply have their information listed in separate divs. Does anyone have any further insight on this? The above article is the only one I can find on the subject.
