Using Product Page Content from an Offline Website
-
Hi all,
We have two websites. One of the website's no longer sells product range A.
However, on the second website, we would like to sell range A.
We paid a copywriter to write some really good content for these ranges and we were wondering if we would get stung for duplicate content if we took these descriptions from website 1 and placed them on website 2.
The products / descriptions are live anymore and haven't been for about 6 weeks.
We're ranking for some great keywords at the moment and we don't want to spoil that.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for all your responses Linda and Dirk!
The pages are not live on the first website so there will be no possibility of any redirects.
Although i'm reassured now that we can transfer the descriptions over without being penalised.
Thank you again!

Not at all, Dirk. I was just clarifying my answer.
If the pages still exist (just not listed on the website) and were doing well = Redirect or canonicalize to take advantage of their residual authority.
If the pages no longer exist = Not much you can do...
In either case, no problem with duplicate content as Google will soon figure out where the content now (exclusively) lives.

Linda,
I hope there is no misunderstanding, I fully agreed with your first answer. I also like the solution with the canonical - however not possible to implement this if the content has already been put off-line.

Dirk

If you don't want to do the redirects, you can do the cross-domain canonical. Lots of unrelated sites do this, for instance when syndicating content.

I saw that the writer had said that site 1 no longer sold product range A, but I wasn't sure whether that meant that the range pages had been removed from Google's index or whether they were just no longer available on the site.
I also wasn't sure which site was the one ranking for great keywords. If it is the product range A products on site 1 (with the really good content) then it might be best to leave them indexed, with the redirect, till Google picks up on the change and passes the goodness to site 2. (If not, no harm done.)

Thanks for your responses!
We don't want to do any redirects between the websites as we would like to keep them as two separate entities.
I believe google has the content still cached which is why i was panicking about duplicate content.
Thanks,
Dale

Hi,
You can only have duplicate content if the same content is published on different sites. As far as I understand from your question, site one doesn't sell product range A anymore, so these products are no longer published on site one. So there can't be a duplicate content issue if you publish the same content on site two.
I like the suggestion of Linda to put 301 from the old pages on site 1 to the new pages on site 2 as it will reinforce the position of the new pages.
rgds,
Dirk

You can use a cross-domain canonical from site 1 pointing to to site 2, or 301 redirect the pages from site 1 to site 2.
Duplicate content isn't a penalty, it just makes Google choose which version to show. If you use one of those signals (probably the 301, if you are sure this is a permanent change), the correct site will get the benefit of the content.

My Website's Home Page is Missing on Google SERP
Hi All, I have a WordPress website which has about 10-12 pages in total. When I search for the brand name on Google Search, the home page URL isn't appearing on the result pages while the rest of the pages are appearing. There're no issues with the canonicalization or meta titles/descriptions as such. What could possibly the reason behind this aberration? Looking forward to your advice! Cheers

What crawler do you recommend for finding orphaned pages on a website?
Is there a crawler that you guys recommend for finding all pages, including orphaned pages on a website? A data export is not feasible. I saw a question from back in 2013 and was wondering if anything has changed since then in regards to crawling orphaned pages. Do most enterprise systems already have this built into their crawler? Or is it best to get a crawler like Xenu or Screaming Frog or Deepcrawl?

Is there an percentage of duplicate content required before you should use a canonical tag?
Is there a percentage (approximate or exact) of duplicate content you should have before you use a canonical tag? Similarly how does Google handle canonical tags if the pages aren’t 100% duplicate? I've added some background and an example below; Nike Trainer model 1 – has an overview page that also links to a sub-page about cushioning, one about Gore-Tex and one about breathability. Nike Trainer model 2,3,4,5 – have an overview page that also links to sub-pages page about cushioning , Gore-Tex and breathability. In each of the sub-pages the URL is a child of the parent so a distinct page from each other e.g. /nike-trainer/model-1/gore-tex /nike-trainer/model-2/gore-tex. There is some differences in material composition, some different images and of course the product name is referred multiple times. This makes the page in the region of 80% unique.

404 Error Pages being picked up as duplicate content
Hi, I recently noticed an increase in duplicate content, but all of the pages are 404 error pages. For instance, Moz site crawl says this page: https://www.allconnect.com/sc-internet/internet.html has 43 duplicates and all the duplicates are also 404 pages (https://www.allconnect.com/Coxstatic.html for instance is a duplicate of this page). Looking for insight on how to fix this issue, do I add an rel=canonical tag to these 60 error pages that points to the original error page? Thanks!

Utilising Wordpress Attachment Pages Without Getting Duplicate Content Warnings.
I have a wordpres site that relies heavily on images and their usefulness. Each post links to larger sizes of the images with links back to the post and the "gallery" all images uploaded to the post. Unfortunately this goes against the "rules" and our attachment page show as duplicate content in Google (even though the image titles are different). There must be a way to utlise and make the most of attachment pages without getting duplicate content warnings?

What are the potential SEO downsides of using a service like unbounce for content pages?
I'm thinking of using unbounce.com to create some content driven pages. Unbounce is simple, easy-to-use, and very easy for non-devs at my company to create variations on pages. I know they allow adding meta descriptions, title tags, etc and allow it to be indexable by Google, but I was wondering if there were any potential downsides to using unbounce as opposed to hosting it myself. Any help would be appreciated!

Using Schema.org: Product or Event as the schema type?
Hello, Most of you heard from the launch of the new format for microdata: Schema.org and my question is about the different types of Schema they provide. Our websites provide an overview of courses, visitors can search/filter training courses and most important: read peer reviews. Until now we formatted (the source) of those courses with the schema type "Product" because it allows us to provide search engines with metadata about reviews via the "Aggregrated Rating". Recently we updated the information about courses, to also provide start dates and locations to users, just like the schema type for: "Events". Because we would like to provide search engines also with both types of data I would like to know your opinion. Schema.org looks like not to support the Aggregated Rating for Events and vice versa for Startdates/Locations for the Product type. And combining the two Schema types also does not looks like an option because we can't put them on the same level like it should be. So what would you recommend to use for kind of schema type(s), are we able to use the 'Product' type next to the 'Event' type and so to combine them? Thanks a lot!
