Woocommerce Duplicate Page Content Issue
-
Hi,
I'm receiving a duplicate content error. It says that this url:
is a duplicate of this:
http://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum
I'm using wordpress, woocommerce, and not really sure how to even address this. I tried adding this to .htaccess but it didn't redirect the url:
301 Redirects
Redirect 301 https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=41 http://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

Andrew,
Your canonical needs to exist - so for the page you mentioned you need to update the url to the one with the trailing slash. In fact - for all pages on your site you should check if the canonical exist (Screaming Frog can do miracles here)
The issue with the https is a bit different - you should not have both versions (http/https in parallel) - so if your https certificate is ok you should put your site in https & redirect the http version to https
This can be done by adding these lines to your htaccess:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}If you switch to https - you must make sure that all the resources you call on a page are also on HTTPS - if not, users could get a security warning. There is an article on how to migrate site to HTTPS on Yoast: https://yoast.com/move-website-https-ssl/
If your site is on https - your canonicals need to be in https as well. A tool like Screaming Frog can help you to check that both (https & canonicals are ok) - it's not free - but certainly worth the investment.
Hope this helps - don't hesitate to ask if it's not clear

Hi Dirk,
Thank-you for your further clarification.
So, am I just needing to get the current canonical url on the homepage to have a forward slash at the end of the url then along with updating the "http" to "https"?
Currently, when I visit the homepage it says the canonical is this: http://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum (no https and no forward slash at the end).
Thanks for your help!

Hi Andrew,
You use the Yoast e-commerce plugin - and I assume at some point you defined a canonical url for the page you mentioned.
In short - with a canonical url you ask Google not to index this page: https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=41 but the url that you have put as canonical url which is this page: https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculumIn order to respect this request - this url need to exist on your site. However - this url is redirected to https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/ with a 301 redirect (basically stating: hey, this url doesn't exist anymore on this location, but you can find it here).
So, if you update the canonical url from https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum to https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/ your problem is solved.
There is no need to redirect https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=41 to https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/ as the canonical is already taking care of the duplicate content.
More background info on canonical url's can be found here: https://moz.com/learn/seo/duplicate-content
Hope this clarifies, if not, let me know,
rgds,
Dirk

Hi Dirk,
Thank-you for taking the time to respond. I sure appreciate it. I am fairly new with SEO and what you are saying is a little challenging for me to understand. Can you please attempt to break this down a little more for me? I would really appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Andrew

Hi,
The url https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=41 has https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum - however this canonical url doesn't exist - it's redirected to https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/
If you update the canonical to https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/ you should be fine, there is no need to redirect the url's.
rgds,
Dirk

Hello, I recently solved www / no www duplicate issue for my website, but now I am in trouble with duplicate content again. By default, index.html is being loaded, but this is the only index.html I have in the folder. And it looks like the crawler sees two different pages with different DA... What should I do to handle this issue?

Duplicate Content
Crawl Diagnostics has returned several issues that I'm unsure how to fix. I'm guessing it's a canonical link issue but not entirely sure... Duplicate Page Content/Titles On a website (http://www.smselectronics.co.uk/market-sectors) with 6 market sectors but each pull the same 3 pages as child pages - certifications, equipment & case studies. On each products section where the page only shows X amount of items but there are several pages to fit all the products this creates multiple pages. There is also a similar pagination problem with the Blogs (auto generated date titles & user created SEO titles) & News listings. Blog Tags also seem to generate duplicate pages with the same content/titles as the parent page. Are these particularly important for SEO or is it more important to remove the duplication by deleting them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Duplicate Content Problem!
Hi folks, I have a quite awkward problem. Since a few weeks a get a huge amount of "duplicate content errors" in my MOZ crawl reports. After a while of looking for the error I thought of the domains I've bought additionally. So I went to Google and typed in site:myotherdomains.com The results was as I expected that my original website got indexed with my new domains aswell. That means: For example my original website was index with www.domain.com/aboutus - Then I bought some additional domains which are pointing on my / folder. What happened is that I also get listed with: www.mynewdomains.com/com How can I fix that? I tried a normal domain redirect but it seems as this doesn't help as when I am visiting www.mynewdomains.com the domain doesnt change in my browser to www.myoriginaldomain.com but stays with it ... I was busy the whole day to find a solution but I am kinda desperate now. If somebody could give me advice it would be much appreciated. Mike

Duplicate content problem?
Hello! I am not sure if this is a problem or if I am just making something too complicated. Here's the deal. I took on a client who has an existing site in something called homestead. Files cannot be downloaded, making it tricky to get out of homestead. The way it is set up is new sites are developed on subdomains of homestead.com, and then your chosen domain points to this subdomain. The designer who built it has kindly given me access to her account so that I can edit the site, but this is awkward. I want to move the site to its own account. However, to do so Homestead requires that I create a new subdomain and copy the files from one to the other. They don't have any way to redirect the prior subdomain to the new one. They recommend I do something in the html, since that is all I can access. Am I unnecessarily worried about the duplicate content consequences? My understanding is that now I will have two subdomains with the same exact content. True, over time I will be editing the new one. But you get what I'm sayin'. Thanks!

Will one line of duplicate content drag down my landing page?
I am using copyscape to check for duplicate content on my landing pages. I found three sites that have the exact same sentence as mine, on a page that I rank well for on one of two key terms related to the product. The sentence is not essential to my product page. Do I risk losing page one rank on a key search term when I remove that sentence on my site, in hopes of possibly improving the page on the second key search term? Do I leave it alone? This is an older "template" site with very little that I can do SEO-wise, and I have managed to get a few key prodcut landing pages on page one of Google. It has seen a drop in rank on many landing pages post-panda, and I'm doing my best to clean up what I can. Do I leave well enough alone for a page one rank on one term, or swap out that sentence in hopes of getting better rank on two keywords?
