Links From Unrelated Sites

Ok, I know this has kind of been answered, but...
I have a website that helps people find lawyers. I also have a lot of friends who are musiciansand singer songwriters.
I could get these bands to link back to my page.
Should I do this?

But if you are trying to get a lot of backlinks from unrelated site then you have to aware of the output. Relevancy among the sites are one factors for ranking in google. So if you are going for a long term ranking its better to have a solid foundation built for what you are targeting for.

What if I made a blog post about Law or something and linked it? What if they did?What if I make a blog post "things a real estate agent needs to know about law" and links back?
I saw an SEOMoz whiteboard video earlier who said that it doesn't matter if the site is related ornot.

Simple answer - no. Such completely unrelated links won't help your site's authority much, if at all, and the unrelated links on your friends' sites will just look spammy on them.
But I think you kinda already knew that, huh?

[Edited to add: Unless of course you could get them to write posts about why creative folks like musicians/songwriters need a lawyer (review booking contracts, intellectual property protection etc) and could then include helpful links in those articles for where to go to find an appropriate lawyer!]

Accidentally generated navigation links that point to American site from Australian site.
Somehow we ended up getting hundreds-of-thousands of links coming from our .au (Australia site) to our .com (America site). We believe that something happened during a change that turned a handful of our example.com.au navigational and footer links into back links pointing to example.com and sub-domains of the American version. We are currently fixing this, but we are wondering if this could potentially be problematic in terms of a penguin penalty due to an unnatural linking campaign or back link scheme. Could this error create major problems for us in the near future if we have corrected the issue? Your thoughts are welcome! Thanks!

Great site wide link or maybe not?
A client has done come work with company who has added there widget / link back to there website, at first thought this is great, but it has been added on the template so is site wide - which poses the question could this cause problems? Links from flash site completely useless?
From a link building perspective, is a link from a site that's completely flash any good? Can google crawl flash sites at all, or it a waste of time trying to get a link from a flash site?

Are Directory Links a Good Source of Branded Links?

Footer Back Links Question "Site by built by"
Hi all I design and develop websites for clients within the UK. With each website I build, I always add a link to the footer of the website which links back to my website. I have always used the link anchor text "Site By Jump" but then decided to try to use the link anchor text to our benefit by changing the links across all of our portfolio of sites to be: "Graphic Design by Jump"

Most of the websites I build have no relevance to the content on our website. For example, I could build a website for Baby Food and add a backlink to our homepage which doesn't even mention the words "baby food". In some cases, the websites can have thousands of pages, each with this footer link appearing at the bottom of each page. My question is, could these backlinks potentially be seen as black hat or spam to a search engine? I'm doing some SEO for small niche service sites...and aside from niche directories and some light article marketing and local search directories (yelp, etc) there really isn't a budget for content generation. I really only have a budget for profile/submission links. What are some sites where you can quite easily fill out a personal profile with an anchor text variable link that may not be THAT juicy but will stick (i.e. not a spam/fake profile type of link, but something like Linkedin). I'll start with giving away 1 www.istockphoto.com Any others that aren't obvious?

Links from Related Sites with Low PR or semi-related sites with High PR?
Is it better to get a link from a site with lower PR but related content or higher PR but semi-related or unrelated content? For example, if I sell shoes, would a link from a PR1 or PR2 shoe or apparel site be better or a link from PR4 website that sells books be better? I'm not talking about sites with completely unrelated content, but how relevant is PR in obtaining relevant links if I am trying to raise the PR and rankings of my own site?
