Ecommerce filter views, URLs and the SEO implications
-
Hi,
I'm dealing with an ecommerce client who sells furniture. Each category landing page has a menu on the left hand side that allows you filter by colour, material, brand etc.
Take the www.example/double-beds page, as an example: if you select 'Wood' from the 'Material' filter, the URL changes to www.example/Category/Browse?PageNumber=&ViewAs=&ObjectEntityKey=1916&PageSize=15&SortBy=&filterOptions=47&filterOptions=47 and all the wooden double beds are displayed.
As this new URL contains some of the same products/content as www.example.com/double-beds, where do we stand from an SEO/duplicate content point of view? Are we at risk of a duplicate content slap?
Cheers,
Lewis

You can set up Canonical tags in your template. Usually the default is to canonical the page's URL, but if you create the canonical tag to the main page, you should be ok. It will help reduce duplicate content and tell google that you want them to pay attention to the content and structure of your main page.
I would also set parameters in GWT, this will help reduce errors, like 404 errors if product options change in the future. When you are using dynamic URL structure like this, it also helps Google understand and read them better. I would implement both of these changes. Depending on what platform you are in, you should be able to export the URLs to easily import the canonical tags.

Hi Andy,
It's a new site (launched last Friday) and, luckily, the offending URLs have not been indexed yet! It appears that all of the affected page URLs start with www.example.com/category/browse - so a rule to noindex, nofollow all of these should work!

Hi Lewis,
Am I right in assuming that you have templates within your ecommerce system? If so, you could identify which one powers these pages, and as long as no others are affected, then you could just add it to this one.
You can disallow via the robots.txt, but this isn't the same as a noindex. If you were to disallow access to a URL that was already indexed and then changed this to a noindex, you would find Google can't access the page to honour the noindex. Messy business!
I'm not even sure you can achieve this via the .htacess file as it might catch more than you require.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the response.
I was thinking we could noindex, nofollow, but how would we do this without figuring out every single URL it affects? There are obviously hundreds (thousands?) of combinations, and going through this manually will be a huge investment of time.
Cheers,
Lewis

Hi Lewis,
As this new URL contains some of the same products/content as www.example.com/double-beds, where do we stand from an SEO/duplicate content point of view? Are we at risk of a duplicate content slap?
This is very possible. At any point if duplicate content is seen, there is a chance of it counting towards a penalty.
However, I am assuming that the long search results are not intended for the search engines? You could happily noindex, nofollow all of these and remove the issue altogether.

Hi All, I am using chrome browser and in my category page when i search my keyword like example Acer Laptop it is showing me 40 searches for that keyword in front end while in view source it is showing 100. Now for same category of my competitor page when i search Acer Laptop it shows 20 searches in front end and 300 in view source. So my question is - Is it a good practice I have seen my competitor page he is using tab button where lot of geunine content is there that is the reason hiss view source keyword search is more. So will it impact on seo?

Ecommerce and Secure Checkout
We made changes several months ago trying to become compliant with Google Trusted Stores. This change effects our secure checkout. Here is an example website:www.froggysfog.com once you go to checkout:
Technical SEO | | marketing_zoovy.com
https://www-froggysfog-com.app-hosted.com/c=gbY1kT9hZx1OJrCN07bHz3tTy/s=www.froggysfog.com/checkout.cgis
Once you have gone to checkout all the links are changed:
https://www-froggysfog-com.app-hosted.com/category/10-fluid.10-fog/ I know I can remove the session ID in webmaster tools, but I'm not sure what else I should be doing to ensure that these links are not indexed. We have the robot.txt set up to not index anything in checkout or that is on secure: http://www.froggysfog.com/robots.txt However, due to the entire url change when on secure. I'm wonder if I need to set up in webmaster tools to exclude any url with app-hosted.com or if there is a better option. thank you0 -
SEO multi-language ecommerce with Oscommerce
Hello Team, I have few things that have been bugging me for a while. I hired a SEO company, Just Search in Italy, to do the full campaign for me, both for Italian and French language. However, I'm a little puzzled over their suggestions: -for muti-language they suggested to use separate domains Sposae.com for Italian and Sposae.fr for French. I'm a little worried about this because this means that I would need to do double job every time we do any changes or updates to the website, because now we have two ecommerce software running. Right now I have on Sposae.com both languages, using the Ultimate SEO URL. My question to you all is do I really have to use different domains? The system I have now is really not good? Thanks a lot

I have several keyword list I am trying to market - (My website is : http://www.soobumimphotography.com/) San Antonio wedding photographer, family photographer San Antonio sports photographer in san antonio headshot san antonio engagement photos san antonio I think it's too broad and thinking about getting separate sites for them. I know I can make urls something like this http://www.soobumimphotography.com/headshot using multisite function and planning to redirect it to www.sanantonioheadshots.com etc Is this good idea to do so? Should I get a new hosting and domain and start it all over again. Thank you

URL Structure: When to insert keywords?
I read the SEOmoz beginers guide and it said that it's beneficial to place keywords in the URL as long as you don't overdo it. However, this seems awkward for common pages, such as "Home", "About", "Contact" etc.... I've currently targeted a specific keyword for each page on my site, as follows: Home: "Green Screen" Work: "Greenscreen" About: "Event Photography" Pricing: "Green Screen Photography" Should I rename the URLs as: Home: ...com/green-screen-home.html Work: ...com/greenscreen-work.html About:...com/about-event-photography.html Pricing:...com/green-screen-photography-pricing.html

URL with tracking code
Hi there, At the company i am currently working for we have a problem with shortcut url with tracking in it. They send a lot of brochures with a shortcut URL which redirects to the page of the event with tagging. For example The real URL is:
Technical SEO | | RuudHeijnen
http://www.sbo.nl/cursussen/schoolleider-primair-onderwijs/ The URL in the brochure is:
www.sbo.nl/schoolleiderpo this then redirects to: h
ttp://www.sbo.nl/cursussen/schoolleider-primair-onderwijs/?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=shortcut&utm_campaign=schoolleiderpo Now we can measure the effect of the brochure on on-line traffic and conversion. This is great but a lot of website link to that shortcut url and if the event is put offline the links to it generate an 404. We have now about 800 backlinks that generate this 404 and i want to fix it. Another big problem "i think" is the possibility that google will index this url with tagging. Now i have 2 options: 1. look at al the url with that 404 and redirect them with a 301 to the best page 2. create the shortcut on an page that is most suitable but then i will get the tagging in the URL and i guess google will see this as dublicate content. It is possible that in the future the shortcut url will be used again. What would you suggest as the best sollution.0
