Not showing in local for primary keyword
-
I have a client in the junk removal business and I can't get him to show in local for junk removal +city. Junk removal is not a Google Plus category so we have to choose Garbage Collection Service, which everyone else does as well. I've optimized the site and the local listing pretty well, much better than the competitors, but we're still not showing.
It's not that we're asking to rank better, we're just trying to get on the list for the one term that makes all the difference in this business. I feel like there's a junk removal party going on and we're not invited. I've thought about a possible over-optimization penalty, but there's no G warning or message and we use fewer keywords than our competitors and have no spammy links as some of the competition does. Some companies that are no longer in business are visible. I just can't figure out what we might be doing wrong.
Any ideas or suggestions I might have missed?

Hey Dino!
Thanks so much for following up. If your story isn't proof of the importance of proper categorization, nothing is
I'm really glad your client popped back into the pack and wish you luck with making them even stronger with the work ahead. It looks like a lot of effort has gone into their website, so that's a really good sign!

Thanks Miriam, I've been working on the citations and many of them should be updated very soon. I will complete a full audit as it turns out the company was once a general contractor, which may be where Google is pulling much of their information from (yes, the importance of accurate citations).
All that being said, after I updated the category yesterday, big surprise, client is now back in local for Junk Removal, less than a day later. First problem solved, now on to those citations....
Thanks again for having a look and for the kind feedback.
Regards, Dino

Hey Dino!
No worries, and hope your trip is a good one!
Now, what I say here can in no way replace a formal audit, but I confirm that your client isn't showing up in the 3 pack or the top results in the Local Finder view for 'junk removal philadelphia'.
- Looks like you've got some citation work ahead:

Pay close attention to the consistency of the business name. It seems like there are a ton of different versions of it. And, pay very close attention to the presence of this duplicate Google+ Local page: https://plus.google.com/108918779748346828023/about?hl=en-US
-
Are you confident that the business address is legitimate? I'm not seeing any signage for this business on Streetview at its address:
- I would highly recommend putting the toll free and vanity numbers in images rather than text at the top of your website. It's the local number you want to be sure you're promoting most. Glad to see it in your footer and on your contact page!
These are just a few things I spotted in 2-3 minutes of looking. Looks like a full audit would be a smart idea when you're back in the US. Hope this helps!

Miriam, so sorry for not responding sooner. I don't know why I never saw your response when you posted it (just thought everyone was ignoring me). I'm overseas at the moment (Indonesia) and internet connections do some really funky things here. I know it's been awhile, but thank you for the response. I'm still having the issue, however, but you've given me some things to check out.
Here's the client: http://ezcleanupphiladelphia.com
Regarding the categories, Junkyard, Salvage Yard and Auto Wrecker really don't describe his business. I do like the other category you mentioned, Garbage Dump Service, but right now, Google isn't showing any local results for that search (from where I'm sitting).
But check this out... I went back into the dashboard to see what I could try and discovered that the primary category had been changed from Garbage Collection Service to General Contractor! Ugh. I have a team who has been helping me so now I have to find out who's been messing with it. I'll repost to this thread if it comes back.
Thanks again for your thoughtful answer, Dino

Hey Dino,
Are you able to share the website? It would definitely help the community provide specific, rather than generic, suggestions. If you can't, that's okay, but you are welcome to share the URL here if you're comfortable with that and will probably get much more actionable advice by doing so.
In the meantime, I'm wondering about your chosen category. I think of a garbage collection service as a city service that picks up my recycling cans ... not something I would call to haul away an old car or something like that. I noticed that Google offers these 3 categories:
Junkyard
Salvage Yard
Auto Wrecker
In addition to Garbage Collection Service, which you mentioned you're already using, I also see a category for 'Garbage Dump Service'. I wonder if that's an important one for you to know about as the synonyms are very similar to those used for Garbage Collection Service:
pick up, pickup, recycling, trash, pick up, pickup, recycling, trash, pick up, pickup, recycling, trash
So, some interesting possibilities, but without seeing the site itself and looking at the results, best I can do here is suggest you do a full audit of the website. Here's a great post for that: https://moz.com/blog/ultimate-local-seo-audit

How can I PREVENT my page from ranking for a keyword?
Hello, I'm in a unique situation where I need to prevent a web page and business listing from ranking for a keyword in Google. The keyword is a phone number that is not associated with the business and is not listed anywhere on the page or in reviews on the business listing. It's causing confusion for people who perform a reverse phone number lookup and see our business and think we called them. I already submitted feedback on the search results, have contacted GMB support, have submitted the page for indexing in Search Console, and am now going to try displaying the correct phone number in the page title and meta description.

Aside from these steps, is there anything else I can do? Your help is appreciated! Thanks! Lindsey2 -
How to rank for local keywords (cities) when you don't have brick and mortar stores
Hi folks, We have developed a site that connect local consumers with local businesses (brick and mortar). The keywords that consumers search for are e.g. "plumber san diego" or "hairdresser" + "local area" and so on...good old fashioned local searches. Sometimes even without the location added in the search. But how do we BEST optimize our site to get the most organic traffic from these local searches? We don't have brick and mortar stores or offices but our service is of high value and will save consumers lots of money and even help the local businesses when in need of extra customers. Thanks in advance for all your input. Have a nice day. Chris

The Local Stack Rollout - A New Day In Local
Hey There, all my fellow Local SEOs! Yesterday morning, I was searching for a car wash and was really puzzled to see my search return snack pack-style results, given that I wasn't looking for a restaurant, hotel or an entertainment venue. Sure enough, what I had run into was the rollout of Google's latest local SERPs, which for the sake of clarity, let's call the Local Stack. This is happening in multiple countries and across thousands of keywords and your local clients (or your local business) are likely to be affected by it, so I thought I'd post a heads-up here. Good Reading: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2015/08/06/7-pack-becoming-3-pack-with-mobile-like-snak-pack-rollout/ http://blumenthals.com/blog/2015/08/07/thoughts-about-the-new-local-stack-display/comment-page-1/#comment-859275 http://www.localsearchforum.com/google-local-important/35481-goodbye-7-packs-only-3-packs-no-phone-address-all-local-results.html http://www.localsearchforum.com/google-local-important/35515-new-local-3-stack-local-pro-opinions-roundup-change-rocked-our-world.html That last one has a bunch more great links in it. In June, I wrote a post here on Moz itemizing my concerns about the Snack Pack and its impacts on the hospitality/entertainment industries. Now, these same concerns are coming to me local-search-wide, with the rollout of the Local Stack. My early days key points from looking at the new Local Stack: No phone numbers without clicking through to Local Finder, which I consider to be really poor usability, given the invention of the cell phone and the way we use it call businesses. No links to the Google+ Local page, meaning that consultants like ourselves may have a really hard time explaining the value of creating a Google listing when so few SERPs will now actually lead to that listing. 3 chances to rank when your city has dozens or even hundreds or businesses in a single industry seems next-to-impossible. It's not a good reflection of the diversity of the business scene in the real world. There aren't 3 Italian restaurants in San Francisco or 3 lawyers in Boston. There are scores of them. Google's Local Stack is a poor reflection of the real world, in my view, and makes every city look like a one horse town. On the other hand, the baldness of the Local Stack is making the 'more' link at the bottom of it really jump out at me, and if you click through, up to 20 businesses will show with the Local Finder. So, I'm a bit torn on this. Are the 4 businesses that just fell out of prominence with the removal of the 7 pack worse off or are 13 businesses now jumping for joy because they are in a sort of pack today that they weren't in 2 days ago? I guess this depends on how willing consumers are to click that 'more' link. Given the meagerness of the Local Stack, organic is likely a great deal more important now for every local business, but I'm concerned by SERPs I'm looking at which are mainly taken up by directories rather than any actual local business websites. So, those are some first thoughts from me and I would totally love to hear yours on this thread as you are trying to assess how you see this impacting your clients or your business. It's definitely a new day in Local!

Is getting a top position in a local results block acheiveable if you are outside of the central zone ?
Most of the keywords / phrases we are targeting have the city (London) appended to it ie. service name London, service name in London etc. The business of the site we are working on is located in London, but not in central London. Because of this i think the site is not being ranking as well as it could be (compared to other sites that in the centre or nearer to the centre with seemingly lower profiles, including have no reviews on their Google + Pages). The site itself is relatively strong fluctuating between 3rd and 5th spot for the target phrases in the organic listings, but because of the local block which sits under position 2 our site always towards the bottom of the first page. We've submitted the site to all the relevant local directories and listings sites, got 3 google reviews on the Plus profile and added the correct local html schema markup to any of our sites pages where our address is mentioned, but still we are sitting at around #12 on the local listings block (when you click Map results for...) at the bottom of the 7 local listings. So the site dosnt seem far off being on the front page, but I feel ive exhausted the optimisation i can do, any ideas how i can make any gains in these local listings ?

Google Places - Should my category choice be manual keywords or selected from default list
Hi All, I have a carpet cleaner hire business and am new to google places. I have been doing my listing for it but can't seem to work out whether I should choose one of the default choices in the categories and leave it as that (in my case it would be "carpet cleaning services" or should I manually type some keywords as well as this ? So for instance, I choose the default - carpet cleaning services but also manually type in "carpet cleaner hire" , floor scrubber hire etc etc as other categories Any advice or if someone could point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. thanks Pete

'People Also Searched for' appears on some but not all local businesses, why? (Google Local Knowledge Panel)
I have a client who does not want the 'People Also Searched for' section on the Google Local Knowledge Panel to appear. I informed her that this is a standard part of the search presentation and that we cannot change. She then pointed out that the 'People also searched for' does not appear on her competitors' Google Local Knowledge Panels. (See the attachment for comparison) This raises a couple of questions: Why are the local businesses different? Can I change the content of her panel? I would appreciate any feedback. google-local.jpg
