Does duplicate content not concern Rand?
-
Hello all,
I'm a new SEOer and I'm currently trying to navigate the layman's minefield that is trying to understand duplicate content issues in as best I can.
I'm working on a website at the moment where there's a duplicate content issue with blog archives/categories/tags etc.
I was planning to beat this by implementing a noindex meta tag on those pages where there are duplicate content issues.
Before I go ahead with this I thought: "Hey, these Moz guys seem to know what they're doing! What would Rand do?"
Blogs on the website in question appear in full and in date order relating to the tag/category/what-have-you creating the duplicate content problem.
Much like Rand's blog here at Moz - I thought I'd have a look at the source code to see how it was dealt with.
My amateur eyes could find nothing to help answer this question:
E.g.
Both the following URLs appear in SERPs (using site:moz, com and very targeted keywords, but they're there):
https://moz.com/rand/category/moz/
Both pages have a rel="canonical" pointing to themselves.
I can understand why he wouldn't be fussed about the category not ranking, but the blog? Is this not having a negative effect?
I'm just a little confused as there are so many conflicting "best practice" tips out there - and now after digging around in the source code on Rand's blog I'm more confused than ever!
Any help much appreciated,
Thanks

Hi Rand,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my post. It was actually my Moz analytics campaign which flagged up the issue - I so understand they're guidelines, rather than definitive answers.
I think you've cracked it for me though! A true gent - your moustache would be proud.
Where my site differs is in it does not link to the individual posts and shows all content from those blog posts in full on the category page. I'm now going to go away and (get someone much cleverer than me to) implement changes in the way of snippets of blogs linking through to the full blog articles.
Thanks again for the help.

Hi Stephen - when it comes to blogs, especially Wordpress blogs with paginated categories, Google's gotten plenty good over the years at knowing that the full post is the correct version. The category pages on moz.com/rand don't show the full content of the post, don't earn the same links, and do link to the individual posts, so it's really not a concern to noindex them (and, in fact, it might prevent crawling/indexation that I want Google to be able to do).
e.g. I want Google to be able to index https://moz.com/rand/category/archives/startups/ and https://moz.com/rand/mixergy-interview-startup-marketing-reaching-early-adopters-burnout-more/ even though the category page has a small snippet from the Mixergy post.
In these cases of cases, the right pages are ranking for the right queries, and Google's doing a good job of recognizing and differentiating categories vs. posts.
Hope that helps!

Despite canonical duplicate content in WMT
Hi, 2 weeks ago we've made big changes in title and meta descriptions. To solve the missing title and descriptions. Also set the right canonical. Now i see that in WMT despite the canonical it shows duplicates in meta descriptions and titles. i've setup the canonical like this:
Technical SEO | | Leonie-Kramer
1. url: www.domainname.com/category/listing-family/productname
2. url: www.domainname.com/category/listing-family/productname-more-info The canonical on both pages is like this: I'm aware of creating duplicate titles and descriptions, caused by the cms we use and also caused by wrong structure of category/products (we'll solve that nest year) that's why i wanted the canonical, but now it's not going any better, did i do something wrong with the canonical?0 -
Joomla: content accesible through all kinds of other links >> duplicate content?!
When i did a site: search on Google i've noticed all kind of URL's on my site were indexed, while i didn't add them to the Joomla navigation (or they were not linked anywhere on the site). Some examples: www.domain.com/1-articlename >> that way ALL articles are publicly visible, even if they are not linked to a menu-item... If by accident such a link get's shared it will be indexed in google, you can have 2 links with same content... www.domain.com/2-uncategorised >> same with categories, automatically these overview pages are visible to people who know this URL. On it you see all the articles that belong to that category. www.domain.com/component/content >> this gives an overview of all the categories inside your Joomla CMS I think most will agree this is not good for your site's SEO? But how can this be solved? Is this some kind of setting within Joomla? Anyone who dealt with these problems already?

Duplicated content in news portal: should we use noindex?
Hello, We have a news portal, and like other newspapers we have our own content and content from other contributors. Both our content and our contributors content can be found in other websites (we sell our content and they give theirs to us). In this regard, everything seems to work fine from the business and users perspective. The problem is that this means duplicated content... so my question is: "Should we add the noindex, nofollow" tag to these articles? Notice that there might be hundreds of articles everyday, something like a 1/3 of the website. I checked one newspaper which uses news from agencies, but they seem not to use any noindex tag. Not sure what others do. I would appreciate any opinion on that.

Does creating a mobile site in html5 create duplicate content?
We are creating a mobile site in html5 to serve smartphones only. On a seperate domain, m.example.com. From what I have read Google treats smartphones as desktops due to thier advanced web browser capabilities. So no need to bother with googlebot.mobile right? Googlebot should index the site once I create a normal sitemap.xml. My concern is that the mobile site pulls the same content as the main site which is already indexed. Would this not create duplicate content?
