Getting news and/or advice right from the horses mouth is excellent. Just don't let one persons opinion on SEO guide you. You need to research because most of SEO is theory and if you get a "bad poster on a great site" like Ryan mentioned, you might waste a lot of time!
I'm sure there are still places out there touting article spinning and blog networks, but don't be fooled!

Dana and Kevin's responses are great and deserve a thumbs up. I would add a few key site which have not been mentioned. I would place these primary information sites above any secondary sources:

Before looking to other sources, my advice is go to the official source of information.
If you decide you need more analysis, SEOmoz is (obviously) my preferred suggestion. I would suggest the above sources combined with SEOmoz is enough to keep a person busy for a year.
When you do view other sources, including SEOmoz, keep in mind there are great posters on bad sites, and bad posters on good sites. The difference is, the good sites will (eventually) correct any bad information. I prefer SEOmoz because they do an exceptional job of correcting misinformation. Even so, it may take a week for the error to be caught. With such a large, active community it is a huge amount of work to review every post made on the site.

Not really any "formula", just exposure, experience and time with this industry.
Going to have to disagree with the Rank Tracker Add on that Dana is talking about though. If you are running less than 10 keywords, you'll be fine but anything more than that and Google will block your IP and your results will be messed up.

Dramatic drop in SEO rankings after recovering from hacking
A few months ago my client's website was hacked which created over 20,000+ spammy links on the site. I dealt with removing the malware and got google to remove the malware warning shortly within a week of the hacking. Then started the long process to do 301 redirects and disavowing links under Webmaster tools over these few months. The hacking only caused a slight drop in rankings at the time. Now just as of last week the site had a dramatic drop in rankings. When doing a keyword search I noticed the homepage doesn't even get listed on Google Maps and for Google Search instead the inner pages like the Contact Us page show up instead of the homepage. Does anyone have any insight to the sudden drop happening now and why the inner pages are ranking higher than the homepage now?

Canonical when using others sites
Hi all, I was wondering if this is a good way to safely have content on our website. We have a job search website, and we pull content from other sites. We literally copy the full content text from it's original source, and paste it on our own site on an individual job page. On every individual job page we put a canonical link to the original source (which is not my own website). On each job page, when someone wants to apply, they are redirected to the original job source. As far as I know this should be safe. But since it's not our website we are canonical linking to, will this be a problem? To compare it was indeed.com does, they take 1 or 2 senteces from the original source and put it as an excerpt on their job category page (ie "accountant in new york" category page). When you click the excerpt/title you are redirected to the original source. As you might know, indeed.com has very good rankings, with almost no original content whatsoever. The only thing that is unique is the URL of the indeed.com category where it's on (indeed.com/accountant-new-york), and sometimes the job title. Excerpt is always duplicate from other sites. Why does this work so well? Will this be a better strategy for us to rank well?

Google indexing site content that I did not wish to be indexed
Hi is it pretty standard for Google to index content that you have not specifically asked them to index i.e. provided them notification of a page's existence. I have just been alerted by 'Mention' about some new content that they have discovered, the page is on our site yes and may be I should have set it to NO INDEX but the page only went up a couple of days ago and I was making it live so that someone could look at it and see how the page was going to look in its final iteration. Normally we go through the usual process of notifying Google via GWMT, adding it to our site map.xml file, publishing it via our G+ stream and so on. Reviewing our Analytics it looks like there has been no traffic to this page yet and I know for a fact there are no links to this page. I am surprised at the speed of the indexation, is it a example of brand mention? Where an actual link is now no longer required? Cheers David

Why do weaker competitors on open site explorer outrank me on SERP
Hi I am new to the whole SEO + marketing and was just wondering why the competition is doing better in SERP they are all in the top 1-5 positions; however i am 5th on page 2 ?? after doing a site explorer analysis i found that I am beating them in all aspects, my site is sparrowmakeup.com.au keyword is "makeup artist sydney' any suggestions on how to increase my SERP would be helpfull.

Question relates to mobile site & duplicate content.
We are working on the mobile version of a large site (migraine.com) and will be using a separate theme for it (directing visitors to m.migraine.com)- what are the necessary code or other important step we should take so that we do get penalized for having duplicate content?
