Site went down and traffic hasn't recovered
-
Very curious situation. We have a network of sites. Sunday night one (only one) of our sites goes down, and since then we've seen a loss in traffic across all our sites!! Not only have we seen a loss of traffic, we also saw a loss of indexed pages. A complete drop off from 1.8 million to 1.3 million pages indexed.
Does anyone know why one site outtage would affect the rest of them? And the indexed pages? Very confused.
Thanks,
-
My indexation number went back to normal for 2/3 sites. But for one of my sites, the number still hasn't returned to normal. Do you have any idea as to why this might be? Do you think it's a bug with Google?

WOW that's the exact date that my index number went down! That is a huge relief, but at the same time I'm still concerned that my traffic went down during that time. Thank you for sharing the video.

Hi,
Just a note on the indexation drop, it seems Google has adjusted how they display this figure, so if you're referring to Google Search Console for your indexation stats, this may explain it:

Hope it helps!

Thank you Dmitrii for your response.
No, our sites were not hit by manual actions, I checked out GWT for that. But yes, they do link to each other a lot and provide a very reasonable amount of referral traffic to each other. It's not necessarily a network, it's just a handful of domains that have different content, audiences and pages that happen to be owned by the same company. So no, it's not a network in the spammy sense.
But, you do provide a good point about the duplicate content and rankings. I will check those to see if it could have any affect. There was a panda refresh around this time so perhaps that added to our troubles.

Thank you for your response, Michael.
No, the site isn't down anymore. It was down for a couple of hours. We are getting traffic again, but not to the level it was at before. I have already checked the robots.txt file, but I will try the Fetch and Render suggestion as well.
Thanks!

Hi.
"Network of sites" always makes my spam sensors tingle Please provide more information on the structure. Now, why did that website go down? Server problems? Have you checked the manual actions in GWT for those websites? You sure you're not being hit by some kinda penalization?
Now, the larger total number of indexed pages not necessarily means that it's good or would help your rankings/traffic. As well as deindexing does not mean the opposite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVOrml7fp2c However, the usual reasons of deindexing are connected/related to spammy techniques or duplicate content. What does your GWT crawling stats say? Was there a spike recently?
How about rankings of your websites? Did they go down as well? If so, then what happened first?
Since it's a "network", do those websites link to each other? do they link to each other a lot? Is it that much that the most of backlink profile of those websites are links from each other?
Anyway, the easiest explanation which comes to my head is (assuming that it's a "network of websites"):
Websites have links to each other -> One of them goes down -> Google sees that links went missing -> lowers the rankings (since backlink profile got worse) -> traffic goes down.

Is that site still down? Typically when I've seen sites go down, unless it's for a long time, Google doesn't seem to drop it from the index. I had a client site down all day Saturday and it continued to rank well.
And I don't see a reason why that would affect the other sites, unless a huge percentage of their inbound links were from the site that was down--but even then, it would have to be down weeks, at least.
I'm inclined to think that the site outage is a red herring, and that there's something else in common between the sites that's causing an issue. Have you done a fetch-and-render as Googlebot for each of the sites in Search Console? Maybe something is blocked by robots.txt in all the sites that's preventing rendering, and Google is seeing very little content above the fold? <-- bit of a wild guess there...but that's all I've got!

Sub domain? Micro site? What's the best solution?
My client currently has two websites to promote their art galleries in different parts of the country. They have bought a new domain (let's call it buyart.com) which they would eventually like to use as an e-commerce platform. They are wondering whether they keep their existing two gallery websites (non e-commerce) separate as they always have been, or somehow combine these into the new domain and have one overarching brand (buyart.com). I've read a bit on subdomains and microsites but am unsure at this stage what the best option would be, and what the pros and cons are. My feeling is to bring it all together under buyart.com so everything is in one place and creates a better user journey for anyone who would like to visit. Thoughts?

What's the best way for users to upload their images to my wordpress site to promote UGC
I have looked at lots of different plugins and wanted a recommendation for an easy way for patients of ours to upload pictures of them out partying and having fun and looking beautiful so future users can see the final results instead of sometimes gory or difficult to understand before and after images. I'd like to give them the opportunity to write captions (like facebook or insta posts and would offer them incentives to do so. I don't want it to be too complicated for them or have too many steps or barriers but I do want it to look nice and slick and modern. Also do you think this would have a positive impact on SEO? I was also thinking of a Q&A app where dentists could get Q&A emails and respond - i've been doing AMA sessions and they've been really successful and I would like to bring it into out site and make it native. Thanks in advance 🙂

Strange URL's for client's site
We just picked up a new client and I've been doing some digging around on their site. They have quite the wide variety of URL's that make for a rather confusing experience. One of the milder examples is their "About" page. Normally I would expect something along the lines of: www.website.com/about I see: www.website.com/default.asp?Page=About I'm typically a graphic designer and know basically nothing about code, but I just assume this has something funky to do with how their website was constructed. I'm assuming this isn't particularly SEO friendly, but it doesn't seem too bad. Until I got to another section of their site. It's a section that logically should look like: www.website.com/training/public-seminars It's: www.website.com/default.asp?Page=MT&Area=Seminars&Sub=MRM Now that's nonsensical to me! Normally if a client has terrible URL's, I'd say let's do some redirects, but I guess I'm a little intimidated by these. Do the URL's have to be structured like this for some reason? Am I missing some important area of coding here? However, the most bizarre example is a link back to their website from yellowpages.com. Where normally I would expect it to lead to their homepage, I get this bizarre-looking thing: http://website1-px.rtrk.com/?utm_source=ReachLocal&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=AssetManagement&reference_id=15&publisher=yellowpages&placement=ypwebsitemip&action_target=listing_website And as you browse through the site, that strange domain stays. For example the About page is now: http://website1-px.rtrk.com/default.asp?Page=About I would try to google this but I have no idea where to even start! What is going on with these links? Will we be able to fix them to something presentable without breaking their website?

Changes to 'links to your site' in WebMaster Tools?
We're writing more out of curiosity... Clicking on "Download latest links" within 'Links to your site' in Google's WebMaster Tools would usually bring back links discovered recently. However, the last few times (for numerous accounts) it has brought back a lot of legacy links - some from 2011 - and includes nothing recent. We would usually expect to see a dozen at least each month. ...Has anyone else noticed this? Or, do you have any advice? Thanks in advance, Ant!

Help!!! Website won't index after taking it over from another IT Company
Hi, A while back we took over a website that was built in Wordpress. We rebuilt it on another platform and switched the servers over whilst retaining the same domain.I had access to the old GA Account however so did the old IT company. Therefore I created a new GA account and used that in the new website pages.Recently we found the website had been blacklisted (previous to us taking it over) and now after being crawled a lot, only 2 pages have been indexed (over a 2month period). We have submitted a request for revision (to relist the website) buthave had no movement.**Just wondering if having a old, active account that was still linked to their old website would affect our Google listing?****Will dropping the old GA Tracking code/script into the site and deleting the new account enable Google to index?**Also, there is ample content, metadata and descriptions on the site.I welcome any help on this please!

Site Blacklisted
Good morning. Just done my WMT ritual morning check and one of my sites has been blacklisted for malware. It's a wordpress site - I've run various scans, e.g. http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/scanner/ and also installed wordfence and scanned with that and wordfence produced some offending files which I have now deleted. I've also installed website defender in the hope that it wont happen again. I'm pretty good with staying on top of updates and rarely let a few days pass without upgrading new version of wordpress or plugins etc. I've also checked my users to make sure no new admins or anything and also changes passwords. I've asked for a review from Google and just wondered how long these reviews take? Also, has anybody got any advice, is there anything else I should be doing? Thanks

Site just will not be reincluded in Google's Index
I asked a question about this site (www.cookinggames.com.au) some time ago http://www.seomoz.org/qa/view/38488/site-indexing-google-doesnt-like-it and had some very helpful answers which were great. However I'm still no further ahead. I have added some more content, submitted a new XML sitemap, removed the 'lorem ipsum...' Now it seems that even Bing have ditched the site too. The number 1 result in Australia for the search term 'cooking games' is now this one - http://www.cookinggames.net.au/ which surely is not so much better to deserve a #1 spot whilst my site is deindexed? I have just had another reconsideration request 'denied' and am absolutely out of ideas/. If anyone can help suggest what I need to do... or even suggest how I can get feedback from the search engines what's wring that would be fantastic. Thank you David
