Trailing slash
-
Our homepage never had trailing slash and we always pointed internal and external links to homepage URL with no trailing slash. Our canonical also has no trailing slash. Recently our SEO agency is asking us to change it to trailing slash. Is it required as part of best SEO practices?

Rest assured that for your root URL specifically, http://example.com is equivalent to http://example.com/ and can’t be redirected even if you’re Chuck Norris.
Note the quote from John Mueller in the comments
_Lots of good advice from an older blog post that's still valid & relevant today. _
There may be some technical merit that Googlebot starts at the slashed version on the TLD, but I do not think there is any type of SEO advantage with that (if that is the case).

The answer I got from them is as follows
"the default URL that all bots use has the trailing slash. So they start with the trailing slash and then split out from there. So it’s best practice to always use the trailing slash version on all home page links and canonicals"

Trailing slash or no trailing slash - it does not matter, you just need to be consistent. I would also make sure that the no trailing slash 301 redirects to the URL with the trailing slash (or vice versa).
The only reason you need to look at trailing slashes is when you have a reporting system that needs the trailing slash to differentiate between folders. i.e. website.com/folder vs website.com/folder/ The first without the slash is a page within the root folder and the second is a foler within the root folder.
I am not aware of an "advantage" of having the slash vs not on the home page URL, per se though. You SEO company may reason that more people with link to you with a trailing slash (I am not aware of any data on average to support this - your mileage may vary), and if that is the case you are losing link juice through the 301 from the non slashed version to the slashed version on those links to your home page. 301 redirects work and pass equity as long as the two pages are semantically related, I would not think that a 301 from a non slashed to a slashed would cause any issue. Getting back to above, I am not sure that I see any reason to change what you have. Ask the SEO company what reason they have and have them make a real reason vs a generic "best practice" answer.

How do you handle URLs with slashes?
I asked this question before, but with a different scenario. I upgraded my plan to a more advanced cart and all of my URLs changed about 1.5 years ago. I knew nothing about redirects and such, so none of that was done. Basically, let's say my site was: http://www.abc.com, but when people actually visit my site, they are directed to https://www.abc.com/. I have asked my host about redirecting and she that it is not possible. In the past, the link shared has been just www.abc.com . Will this hurt my ranking? My second question is ...let's say I have a link http://www.abc.com/blog , but now, the link is http://www.abc.com/blog/ . Will I be affected, since all my old links omit the slash?

Url structure with dash or slash
Hi There We have a content website. We don't rank well category image related searches but we get quite good traffic for those keywords. Those keywords are mostly like "category images". We want to change our url structure and we have 2 options now. 1- domain.com/category/category-images 2-domain.com/category/images option 1 repeats the category name so it looks spammy option 2 doesn't really have the keyword. any ideas which one tho choose? Thanks! ps: we don't want to use domain.com/category-images (too many root link)

Wordpress & trailing slash on domain name
Hi recently changed my site so it is based on Wordpress, got my preferred domain set in Google webmaster as www.domian.co.uk but since moving to wordpress my domain is now having a slash put on the end of it like www.domain.co.uk/ Most of the links going to my homepage do not have the slash on the end so am I right in thinking I should get rid of the slash from my site so I have one consistent url? If so any ideas how to banish the slash? Cannot seem to do it through the Wordpress general settings (despite preferred domain being set as www.domain.co.uk !) Thanks T

Slash at the end of a url
I keep reading contradicting information, so I figured I'll ask here. What's the best practice for slash '/' at the end of a URL? Should it be idealchooser.com/search/laptop/ or idealchooser.com/search/laptop (no trailing slash)? The options: 1. Accept both equally 2. Accept 1 and redirect the other with 301 3. Accept 1 and treat the other as a wrong URL returning 404 Which would be the best for SEO? Thank you.

Duplicate content with a trailing slash /
Hi, I 've pages like this: A) www.example.com/file/ B) www.example.com/file Just two questions: Does Google see this as duplicate content? Best to 301 redirect B to A? Many thanks Richard PS I read previous threads re the subject, it sounded like there was a bug in SEOMoz but I was not absolutely clear. Apologies if this is going over old ground.

With a slash and without a slash
I have noticed recently on open site explorer that pages are listed that contact the ending / and that dont. so for example- www.onlinemediadirect.co.uk/blog-setup and www.onlinemediadirect.co.uk/blog-setup/ They also have slightly different page authority. Is it worth setting up a redirect or does google not need this ? The page ranks well of course.
