Ecommerce - Go to Basket 302 query
-
Hi
I have done a site crawl and there are a lot of 302's on the 'Go to Basket' link when customers go through to pay.
Should these be updated to 301's? On just the first part of the link so nothing after the ? /OrderCalculation?
Thank you
-
Yep working on these asap!
-
I'll assume these are going to a different secure subdomain, so don't worry too much about it. Like Thomas posted, you aren't going to get the shopping cart to rank (and don't want it to) so there's no real concern. A 302 is essentially stopping "link juice" from going to the cart page, so as far as domain authority goes it seems like you should leave it how it's set up now. You're keeping the authority on your pages while sending users to the correct place to complete the purchase. As long as these aren't internal links to other product pages or family pages, you should be good.
-
Not really, I would be more concerned with the 302 redirects on your homepage.
-
So it won't affect overall domain authority?
-
You're not trying to rank your basket page, so I wouldn't personally worry about these.

Duplicate URLs on eCommerce site caused by parameters
Hi there, We have a client with a large eCommerce site with about 1500 duplicate URLs caused by the parameters in the URLs (such as the sort parameter where the list of products are then sorted by price, age etc.) Example: www.example.com/cars/toyota First duplicate URL: www.example.com/cars/toyota?sort=price-ascending Second duplicate URL: www.example.com/cars/toyota?sort=price-descending Third duplicate URL: www.example.com/cars/toyota?sort=age-descending Originally we had advised to add a robots.txt file to block search engines from crawling the URLs with parameters but this hasn't been done. My question: If we add the robots.txt now and exclude all URLs with filters - how long will it take for Google to disregard the duplicate URLs? We could ask the developers to add canonical tags to all the duplicates but these are about 1500... Thanks in advance for any advice!

Canonicalisation query
Hi, I'm in a bit of a quandary. I have this page: https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/ As you can see we have provided filters to only display Fixed rate, Tracker rate, Variable rate, High LTV and HMO products for users. At the moment our canonical tags all point to the main Comparison page, but in order for the search feature to work dynamic urls are created. So for example on the fixed rate page (https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/fixed-rates/) when a user puts in their search criteria the url ends up looking like this: https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/fixed-rates/?PrevTab=HMO&PVal=250000&Amt=100000&Tme=20&SearchId=5508 Now, my quandary is this - should I make the canonical tag for the filtered products (fixed, tracker etc) like this: https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/fixed-rates/ or should I keep it at https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/ ? The comparison page shows all products, ordered by the lowest rate and with a pre-set search, limited to 20 - so not all products will be displayed on the page - and some products (like the high LTV ones) are not displayed on the main comparison landing page anyway... Thanks, Amelia

HTTPS Login on HTTP Site | 301 or 302 Redirect?
I've searched the forum on this and online and can't seem to find a definitive answer. Some e-commerce sites that are http use a 302 redirect to the https login while other sites use a 301 redirect. I know 302 is generally not recommended but in this case it may make sense. Can anyone advise on the correct practice?

Ecommerce: remove duplicate product pages or use rel=canonical
Say we have a white-widget that is in our white widget collection and also in our wedding widget collection. Currently, we have 3 different URLs for that product (white-widgets/white-widget and wedding-widgets/white-widget and all-widgets/white-widget).We are automatically generating a rel=canonical tag for those individual collection product pages that canonical the original product page (/all-widgets/white-widget). This guide says that is the structure Zappos uses and says "There is an elegance to this approach. However, I would re-visit it today in light of changes in the SEO world."

I noticed that Zappos, and many other shops now actually just link back to the parent product page (e.g. If I am in wedding widget section and click on the widget, I go to all-products/white-widget instead of wedding-widgets/white-widget).So my question is:Should we even have these individual product URLs or just get rid of them altogether? My original thought was that it would help SEO for search term "white wedding widget" to have a product URL wedding-widget/white-widget but we won't even be taking advantage of that by using rel=canonical anyway.0 -
URL Going Over the Last Page of Pagination - Post Webinar Discussion
**Discussion Question: **Lets say you have 33 pages of paginated content but someone lands on page 34+, what do you do? I just setup a variable on my site so when someone lands on a page that is over the page count they are redirected to the last page of the paginated content. My reasoning is the user is looking for the last page, so why not redirect them to it? Now I just saw in the latest webinar on ecommerce (by Everett Sizemore) that he recommends a 404… should I switch? Why a 404? Again, what do you guys do when you encounter this situation?

Still Going Down In Search
After signing up to SEOmoz as a pro user and sorting out all the things that the search flagged up with our website (htyp://www.whosjack.org) we jumped very slightly in search only to continue going down again. We are a news based site, we have no dup content, we have good writers and good orangic links etc I am currently very close to having to call it a day. Can anyone suggest anything at all from looking at the site or suggest a good SEO firm that I could talk to who might be able to work out the issue as I am totally at a loss as to what do do now. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.
