Page speed in relation to SEO
-
I cannot seem to find any information about this, so I thought I would try to get a few people's opinion. How do you think pagespeed is measured in terms of Google using it as a ranking factor? Do you think they use their internal Pagespeed app? Something during the crawl? Your GA site speed?
-
Right, I am familiar with. Actually what I have done is kind of interesting in that regard. The product I work with is a CMS that produces large CSS and JS files. So I have profiled the CSS to render the above the fold, then after the page is loaded append the full CSS file to style the rest. The same with the JS too. The reason it can't go into production like that is because the unsightly flash of unstyled content. But it seems the crawlers are picking them up fine for the cached page images.

You should definitely check out our search engine ranking factors, which includes looking at speed compared to other stuff.

It does, quite a bit better actually, http://screencast.com/t/nZtKg3CwttJy and desktop http://screencast.com/t/xuMKM1KN Most all of the problems are coming from 3rd party integrations. Like say with GA it throws off a deferred parsing error, a cache life error, and a minimize resource error.
-
I am hoping the risk is going to be low considering what is being blocked. I all reality what I am blocking is what Google grips about, mainly javascript files with short cache lives. A facebook remarketing code, a norton ssl javascript, a freshdesk chat app, a mailchimp js file, and their fonts. So I don't think crawlability will be affect and it looks like the page render is not affected either.

I am going to reply to the body since my follow up is relevant to all of the replies. One thing I have been trying is hiding elements when it comes to Googlebot. Basically the things that slow the site down that a lot of sites have, such as tracking pixels, analytics, stats programs, chats, and things like that. I have even noticed that whatever Google uses to render the previews seems to have their whole font library installed on it too. Any thoughts on this practice?

I would assume their PageSpeed Insights (https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/insights/about), as that's the measurement tool they've freely given us. But who knows with Google...
-
I'm pretty sure they're using something like the internal pagespeed tool but with probably way more data points to look at. I'm also pretty confident that they use another way of capturing the time it takes to load the first things on your screen so they can check how good or bad the user experience is.

Our protected pages 302 redirect to a login page if not a member. Is that a problem for SEO?
We have a membership site that has links out in our unprotected pages. If a non-member clicks on these links it sends a 302 redirect to the login / join page. Is this an issue for SEO? Thanks!

Non-Existent Parent Pages SEO Impact
Hello, I'm working with a client that is creating a new site. They currently are using the following URL structure: http://clientname.com/products/furry-cat-muffins/ But the landing page for the directory /products/ does not actually have any content. They have a similar issue for the /about/ directory where the menu actually sends you to /about/our-story/ instead of /about/. Does it hurt SEO to have the URL structure set up in this way and also does it make sense to create 301 redirects from /about/ to /about/our-story/?

SEO impact of adding a lead gen form to a #1 ranked page
We have a page that ranks really well and gets a lot of traffic. We're wondering what would be the SEO impact of putting a lead gen form before visitors can download what they want. Currently, entrepreneurs can download a free business plan template kit. It's a zip file that include 6 files like a blank template, an blank Excel for the financials, examples files and links to related articles. The page is : http://www.bdc.ca/en/advice_centre/tools/business_plan/Pages/default.aspx Do you think that adding a form before downloading the zip file would cost us rankings? Thanks,

Should I deindex my pages?
I recently changed the URLs on a website to make them tidier and easier to follow. I put 301s in place to direct all the previous page names to the new ones. However, I didn't read moz's guide which says I should leave the old sitemap online for a few weeks afterwards. As I result, webmaster tools is showing duplicate page titles (which means duplicate pages) for the old versions of the pages I have renamed. Since the old versions are no longer on the sitemap, google can no longer access them to find the 301s I have put in place. Is this a problem that will fix itself over time or is there a way to quicken up the process? I could use webmaster tools to remove these old urls, but I'm not sure if this is recommended. Alternatively, I could try and recreate the old sitemap, but this would take a lot of time.

Switchboard Tags - Multiple desktop pages pointing to one mobile page
I have recently started to implement switchboard tags to connect our mobile and desktop pages, and to ensure that our mobile pages show up in rankings for mobile users. Because our desktop site is much deeper in content than our mobile site, there are a number of desktop pages we would like to have point to one mobile page. However, with the switchboard tags, this poses a problem because it requires multiple rel=canonical tags to be placed on the one mobile page. I'm assuming this will either confuse the search engines, or they will choose to ignore the rel=canonical tag altogether. Any ideas on how to approach this situation other than creating an equivalent mobile version of every desktop page or implementing a user agent detection redirect?
