Duplicate Title Issues using # anchor tags
-
Our homepage navigation uses anchor tags (?TabNumb=1#, ?TabNumb=1# etc) rather than directly linking to different pages to decrease load time (and simplify the build process I owuld imagine). These anchor links are showing up as duplicate titles in Moz.
I am pretty sure if I were to use noindex or rel tags, that could have a negative affect on my search results. Any way to tackle this outside of a complete redesign of the structure?
http://www.dedoose.com/about-us/?TabNum=2# as an example
-
If your developers are able, I would prefer to see these tabs handled with hashes instead of URL parameters, like this:
- http://www.dedoose.com/in-the-field/#1 (Overview)
- http://www.dedoose.com/in-the-field/#2 (Publications)
- http://www.dedoose.com/in-the-field/#3 (Events)
- http://www.dedoose.com/in-the-field/#4 (Case Studies)
Even better would be to created dedicated pages for these topics and get rid of the tabs like Dirk mentioned.
Also as Dirk mentioned, set a canonical tag for these pages and crawlers should index them correctly: For example, all of your "In The Field" pages would have this exact canonical, regardless of parameters or hashes:
-
If you only want to solve this issue - you could use a canonical url example http://www.dedoose.com/about-us/ - put a self referencing canonical. With the anchors - you are just navigating while staying on the same page so the canonical will do the trick.
You must know however that Google doesn't really like content which is hidden under tabs - check https://www.seroundtable.com/google-hidden-tab-content-seo-19489.html - so if you want to keep on using anchors to navigate on the page it's better to make sure that all the content is visible when the page is loaded.
Dirk
PS A small remark on usability - on your FAQ - you might want to put the link on the question as well - rather than only put the link on the small little cross.

Do things like using labels on an element that is not a form input affect how google sees us in regards to accessibility?
Do things like using labels on an element that is not a form input affect how google sees us? It's an accessibility error that our devs have made - using a label element because it looks good, not because it's an actual label on a form field. Just wondering how that affects accessibility in Google's eyes.

Using a 301 vs. 302?
I'm running into a very confusing situation - and while I think I've worked through the answer, I'm hoping someone can help provide their insight. I have a client who is in the process of rolling out a responsive site. Because we need to host both Responsive and legacy versions of product pages on the domain we are using the following URL pattern. New Responsive Product Page exampleurl.com/product (existing URL structure) Older Product Pages (redirected to) exampleurl.com/legacy/product The rollout will be approximately 2 months to complete. The question becomes - should a 302 redirect be applied from the existing URl to the /legacy/ URLs until the new designs are launched? Given that the timing will be so short this seems reasonable. Or should a 301 be applied until the new responsive designs are rolled out?

Duplicate Titles for Large Lists
Our blog (www.cowleyweb.com/blog) has recently been given topic categories so we can utilize our old blogs. Otherwise, users would only see what's new and never look back (our blogs are organized by the month they were published) and all that hard work would kind of be a waste after a while. So we came up with a few topics (i.e. social media, internet marketing, etc.) and adding those as tags to blogs. Now, users can click the topics and get a results page on our blog of all the previously published blogs related to that topic. Sounds great. BUT, it's hurting our SEO crawl report. If the list goes beyond one page of search results, the 2nd and subsequent pages get dinged as "duplicate title" b/c they share the same title (i.e. "Social Media"). How can I fix this? I'm not the web designer but something tells me maybe some sort of tag that says "Page 2" or something would do the trick. We use Drupal which is good for customization. I assume tons of bloggers and websites have dealt with this problem. Please help. Want to give the web guy some solutions. Thank you.

Pagenation - Crawl Issue
Hi,
Web Design | | semvibe
We have a site with large number of products (6000 +) under each categories and so we have made a page under each category to list out all products (View all page), which lists out product in pagenation setup built on Ajax. The problem is only our 1st page is crawlable and all the other pages beyond 1st page remains hidden,
We need make all our pagenation URL’s crawlable, our requirements are we never want a change in URL as user goes to next page, want to show the user the same URL for all the pagenation numbers. Is there a perfect solution?0 -
Meta Title and Description for click through optimization
I have a few years experience optimizing PPC text for click-through and conversion rates. I don't see many web sites that are using these methods for their organic listings generated from meta tags. Why is this? So many meta tags seem to be either keyword stuffed or auto generated. From my research, it seems that keywords in meta tags mean little to search engine optimization other than the fact that vertically aligning keywords from search phrase to listing to landing page is important. (Just like it is in PPC). Now that I am personally doing more than just PPC, I have begun rewriting meta text for increased conversions. The search results look to me like My web site is the only one doing this. Is everyone missing out on something, or am I missing something?

Using "#" anchors to display different content
If I have a page that has an area on the page that acts like a widget and has three different tabs. These tabs provide 3 different types of information relevant to the page subject matter. By default when someone goes to the page one of the tabs is showing but you have to click on the others to see the info on them. Is it OK to use domain.com/topic#TAB1, domain.com/topic#TAB2, domain.com/topic#TAB3 to create shortcut links so that people can land on the page and have that predetermined tab showing. I'm wondering what search engines might think. Essentially all the content of all three tabs is there for people to see but they'd have to click to see the other tabs. I don't consider the content to be hidden. But I'd like to hear people's thoughts.

H1 Tag, necessary or not? Hidden or not?
Our new site design utilizes H1 tags on all pages except the home page. We couldn't find a way to work it into the design. That being said, what's the opinion on necessity? Do we need an H1? If we do the image replacement thing, will that be better for SEO than none at all? Our old site had one and once we changed it to the term we wanted to optimize for we made the top 10 in less than 60 days. We don't want to lose that placement. Thoughts? You input is very much appreciated.
