Does this lose link value?
-
I have a link to my site from a post on an online forum. I now want to include the forum in a blog post about good industry-related e-forums. If I link to them in this article, will I lose the value from the link on the post in their forum, and could it be seen as spammy?

Thanks for your responses. It would definitely be beneficial to users, so I may just get on and do it. It is a good quality link though, hence my consternation.

Hi Trevor,
In general no you don't lose link juice for reciprocal linking. Why? because the original practice of evaluating the value of a website factored in how many other domains were linking to it. While that is still true today many other things also factor into the ranking now. Had this not been true you would have never seen the rise of "link rings" and "link pools", and ultimately Google penalizing these sites with Panda and Penguin.
The key here is as it always should be, does X site deserve a link from you? Which means, does putting that link on your site give your users any additional value? If the answer is yes, then by all means link to it. On the other side of the coin, that website should have asked the same question about your site, does their users gain any benefit by them linking to you? You should hope the answer is yes.
If both sites benefit from the mutual link, there shouldn't be any problem. If however, as John Cross suggested it becomes a pattern, then you can suffer a penalty.
I hope that helps,
Don

Good question, I am not sure anyone knows the secret sauce - but in my experience It comes down to ratios... so if you have 100 back-links and all 100 of those back-links have a reverse back link - then the site would be at high risk of a penalty...
But if it is a one off then it is of little consequence. Why don't you just nofollow the reverse link?
Also no data on it, but I think google devalues the original link if you reverse it... hence we avoid like the plague... if a high quality link.

"Links" page Value?
I was wondering, Is there any value in these days to advice clients to create LINK US or LINKS page with bunch of reciprocal links on it and solely for link exchange, I remember reading somewhere that, it is little useless in terms for ranking nowadays? Am I right? Thanks!

'dilution' of link value.
Running ecommerce site selling childrens clothing for norwegian market. Most important keyword childrens clothing (barneklær) isnt too competitive (34 if i remember correct). The 2nd most important has very low competition (5 i think). I am starting a 3 month add with the best blog i found in norway. I am getting a 150x150 ad. In addition she is giving me a presentation in her blog tekst and allows me to arrange giveaway on my terms. She is allowing me to choose anchor text to use in presentation. Her stats to me seem very solid PA 58, DA 50 mozr 5,2 , mozt 4,6. http://www.joridkvam.com/ Should I in the upcoming months try to get in as many anchor texts links from her to different pages on my site. I have main words and producers etc that i am optimizing for on differnt sites. Or will the value of them just get diluted? so basically try to get in 2 links or 10 ? I am also curious as to which extent this one link will affect my ratings. I am ranking 24th for main term atm ( http://www.epleskrinet.no/ ) . Any one have any guesses ? thanks

Reciprocal Links Or One Way Links?
After reading a recent blog post on guest blogging and ways to build relationships for link building purposes, I began to wonder about something. It is my understanding that one way backlinks are superior to reciprocal linkage, but reciprocal is better than no link at all. So is it still worthwhile to do reciprocal guest blogging, and will the value of the links be worth it when completed? Or should we just be of the opinion that: One Way Link > Reciprocal > No link

Links from any country?
My site is aimed primarily at the UK, 90% of the traffic is from the UK and most of my links are from other UK based and UK targetted websites. The content is actually fairly international (apart from certain terms like Plasterboard instead of Drywall, etc). My question is: Should I concentrate on gathering links from the UK, or should I widen my search and try to get links from US and European websites? Are there any particular advantages or disadvantages to keeping links "local"?
