Local Personal training studio needs SEO advice. Is directory submission they way forwards?
-
I have a local personal training business and am struggling to push our website to the top of local personal training searches despite already having a better domain and trust score than almost all of the higher ranked competitors. The website has only been live around 4 months but I was wondering if submitting to paid directories would help me to rank on page one? our website is www.danielalexandra.com

Thanks so much for your help here, please let me know when you post your article up so I can have a look through.
Best wishes
Daniel

You'll find that compressing a lot of your images will help considerably with page speed. I've a great fan of pingdom.com and have seen load times go down with direct correlation with increased rankings. Watch out for redirects which add load times and limit the in page coding and calls to scripts.
There is still a place for directory submissions as a part of an overall link building strategy but you need to get the technical and content parts of the '3 pillars' sorted first.

Hi Daniel,
While 11.3s is bad, I had a client who had 14.x seconds and when it was all said and done we were able to get him down to 0.86s on average.
You bet there is a quick way to speed up your website. And you're in luck since you are running WordPress... go install the free plugin W3 Total Cache (W3tc). There are others... don't use them. W3tc is by far the best, albeit it can be a little complicated at first blush.
To overcome the complications, either hire a pro to set it up for you (around $250) or go to gtmetrix.com and do a test on your site. Keep in mind that GTmetrix will always understate your load times so only use webpagetest.org or pingdom for getting an accurate result.
Once you have the results, scroll down to the tab labeled "Page Speed" and you will see where it says "recommendations." When I run a test on your website the #1 thing it shows to fix first is combining your images using CSS sprites. That might be a little hard unless you've done it before so I would skip it and go to "leverage browser caching". Click on it and it will drop down and tell you what you need to do and what are the problem pages. In this case, you need to specify browser caching of at least one week. So now go to your website and to the W3tc plugin you just installed and look for the browser caching setting... if I remember correctly it is in the general settings but I could be wrong. I believe you'll have to set it in seconds.
Then do that for the rest of the items on the GTMetrix report.
Once you are done with that, go install Yahoo's SmushIt plugin for Wordpress. Then navigate to it a do the bulk smushit... part of the problem is just the fact that your page size is almost 2MB... mainly because of photos. Once you run the smushit plugin, your page size will be more around 500KB. That's still about 5 times what it should be so you should really take advantage of CDNs (W3tc will help with that) and maybe hosting all your images on a subdomain so that you can take advantage of HTTP's ability to load from multiple resources at once.
Last thing, in the future, when you upload photos to your website, make sure that you are uploading in a size that is just the right fit. WP will allow you to upload a photo with sizes up to 2MB and then will resize for content but you'll still be loading the full size in the background... thus killing your load times. And if you have the option, choose JPG over PNG as it compresses better... unless you need the alpha channel.
Be on the lookout... I hope to be posting an article to SEOMoz's UGC blog that covers all this in more detail soon.
Best of luck!

Hi there,
Thanks for this, very useful.
Is there a simple way of speeding up my load times significantly, 11.3 seconds is very slow, I wouldn't hang around to have a look.
Thanks
Daniel

Just after a cursory glance at your site, I noticed that your load times are horrible. So I ran a test at webpagetest.org and your load time is 11.3 seconds. You probably don't see that because your browser has a cached version of your website since you've visited it repeatedly. However, Google is grading you based upon a load time of 11.3s.
See here for the results of your website:
http://www.webpagetest.org/result/121228_X3_AGM/Then see here for why that is negatively affecting you:
http://www.socialdesignstudios.com/webpage-speed/Some other points:
1. Add rel=author
2. Start driving a social media campaign (it will help you in the SERPs as well as your audience particularly loves it)
3. Offer a scholarship (see here - point D)
4. Create a Meetup, link it to your page and get a Bootcamp going... Meetup.com will provide great referral traffic as well as clients.
5. Run your site through an HTML/CSS validator to make sure you're not getting held up by simple corrections.
6. Create some "big content" and then push it to your distribution channels to get some good backlinks. At the end of the day you have to remember that you've only had the domain for 4 months and only have a PR1 rating. But whatever you do... don't focus on directory submissions. It'll end up biting you in the end.
Best of luck!

No, paid links go against Google’s guidelines and your website will get deindexed for that.
Here are the few things that you can do -
1. Get your website listed in Google Places
2. Add a link back to Google Listing Page from your website
3. Get listed in some high quality local listing sites
4. Use microformat code for presenting contact information in the footer section of the websiteAnd no idea why you are addressing the same user agents twice

Guest blogging: is there a safe way to do it?
Following Google's nuking of My Blog Guest, is there any way of doing (high-quality, small-scale) guest posting safely? Specifically, do the tips from Neil Patel here (written Jan 22) still stand up? Only post on relevant blogs – ideally these blogs should also be larger than your website. In other words, do it because it will help with branding, traffic, and sales. Posting on bigger blogs that are also relevant will provide you with more good exposure than posting on small, unknown blogs. Avoid using rich anchor text – rich anchor text will become a huge red flag and will probably cause your site to get penalized eventually, especially if you are building these links through guest posts. Share the love – you won’t be able to link out to your site only. From Wikipedia to your competitors, you’ll have to link out to whichever site benefits the reader the most. Build up your author rank – with Google Plus becoming more popular, it will be easier for Google to determine how good of a writer you are. So, you’ll have to focus on publishing only valuable content as you won’t want crap tied to your author account. Co-citations are valuable – even if you don’t get a link from a guest post, just having your site mentioned in the article can help with rankings. I think Google will place more emphasis on co-citations in 2014.

What is the best way to get links now ?
I have been working for a long time in the industry now and I was away for some time. It seems that now after the google updates..It is difficult to do link building. I used to do quality white hat link exchange to very related sites. For example, I own a travel site about Paris (www.simplyparis.org) and I would exchange links with other travel sites about France or/and Paris. It was good for the visitors and SEO.. Now what is the best link building technique ? What should I do to promote my site now?

Sort of lost my way - Links, SEO
Not sure where to start with this so please bare with me. I do the SEO for our company website (we're a small family business), I'm not an SEO'er by profession (I'm a carpenter/joiner) but been doing our site for ten or so years. About 12 months ago sort of let go of work & web things a bit due to very sudden family bereavement which kind of hit me hard. So when I did get back into doing bits on our site I probably then concentrated a little bit too much on content building rather than going after links etc. As a result we've dropped in the SERPS a bit, but having said that still just about clinging within the top ten for our terms. Since I've started again we've had Panda/Penguin and I'm a little unsure how to go about getting links in, most of my competitors are using things like blog commenting (just random blogs that are do follow) , recip linking (any sites as long as they give a link!) etc basically things that long term will hold no value long term (or possibly none even to begin with). All this brand stuff leaves me at a loss, we're a small family business as our the majority of our competitors so not 100% sure that the branding stuff I'm reading about is relevant? As I say I've got some pretty decent content, some of which I am trying to push with mixed results – we're not in a very sexy niche so not much chance of it picking up links naturally! Another thing I am noticing is in my niche I don't think any SEO companies are involved with my competitors, most of our competitors are ranking their home pages for every single related search term, whilst I've have always tried to create a page for each search term and I have these pages ranking. For example my main search term, lets say 'wooden doors' I rank an internal page for this term whilst everyone else seems to rank homepages. I'm finding it hard to get new links into this page, so one idea I do have is elsewhere on my site I have a guide to fitting the doors (with videos, pictures and text) so what I'm thinking is place this guide on my 'wooden doors' page making it a bit more linkable (it's fairly new and not yet gained any links, so no loss to move it) and would also mean a variation of anchor text. A good idea do you think? Some of my other content has been linked to by colleges in the UK, unfortunately all the links are behind moodle log-ins (give me a decent link you leeches! Lol) ! I am thinking of getting in touch with other colleges to see if the content would be useful, but actually getting hold of the person responsible for the subject is proving difficult! I've also done a bit of guest blogging, however I'm torn between writing decent stuff for our blog or giving it away (I wouldn't like to give something away thats poor, ok or doesn’t make sense) to other blogs. Sorry for the ramble (if you've made it this far then thanks for reading!)! Would appreciate all advice. Ultimately would love to get an SEO'er involved but looking around the good un's are out of our price range so I may seek some training as it may prove more beneficial.

Advice On Promoting A Hosting Site
hi, I hope some of you might be able to give me a few pointers here. A friend of mine has started a web hosting company in the UK. Not an affiliate but actually owns a data centre, Now he has a great deal of experience in running hosting in other countries but all his work came from large corporate companies and not from the net. The UK hosting he wants to promote from online sales as well. Now I know his site needs considerable work (http://www.cloudwebsters.co.uk) but I want to be able to give him some advice on the best ways to get started promoting his site. Obviously content is a key to success, but not sure how he can incorporate lots of content into the site as it is effectively e-commerce. Looking at sites such as UK2.net they have a lot of pages on the site but they are all minimal content. such as http://www.uk2.net/glossary/moreuk2/ which only has a couple of sentences on them. Is this really the way to go for the site, my feeling is no as it does not offer any real quality but your opinions are appreciated. Thanks Jenson

List of High Ranking Directories
Hi, Does anyone have a list of high ranking free or almost free directories that have high search engine rankings and have an opportunity for a link or links for a personal development site in the USA? The directories should have the following qualities: Old Site Age A lot of unique content (or as much as a directory can have) A clean site Plenty of Backlinks going to it Facebook followers (if possible, though this might be stretching it) high search engine rankings I think you get the general idea. I'm looking for directories that are high ranking and in for the long haul. They don't have to be free, but it's best if it's inexpensive. Thanks!
