New to SEO, looking for advice.
-
Good day.
I am fairy new to SEO and a lot of things about how google ranking works is very confusing to me. For example i do not understand why websites that are not optimized score 1st positions.
Currently i am working on optimizing http://logiunvarti.lv/ for google.lv. I would like to ask if i am going in the right direction as far as on-page optimization and any kind of suggestion would be very welcome.
Another roadblock i have reached is link building. Latvia is not a big country and most of the websites on similar topic as my are either competitors and are have low domain authority, dead for years, or simply ignore emails. Would social media be a decent alternative?
I feel like i am missing a crucial point on SEO in for my country. I would be extremely grateful for any advice or if possible to contact me on skype for a better explanation on my problem.

First port of call is the Beginners guide to SEO from Moz.... it genuinely gives you the best starting point. Along with lots more great articles here in the Learn SEO and Search marketing section of Moz.
Also see if the recent Webinar on how to perform a Website SEO audit from Moz is available yet, it will help you gain some real insight into numerous measurable facets of your site and its outreach.
Finally keep coming back to the Q&A section of Moz, there are lots of real people giving real and genuinely great insight into lots of topics.
Good luck
Tim

AlexElks,
There is no set amount of time you should add content just be consistent with your strategy. I produce content for my blog once a week, however I want to start expanding the terms I rank for. I am starting to produce a strategy that I may post 2-3 times a week. Make sure your content is great and informative.
You should focus on the social media channel that you find most of your customers use. I however always post my blog posts to Google +. There is a real SEO benefit to posting here. Content is indexed much faster and there are other benefits if you pursue building this channel.
Try OSE with that link without the www. and see what happens. Also do searches in private browsing mode. This will give you a better idea of what is really ranking for those keywords. Google tends to return local search results based on IP address. Could be this site ranks #1 because of where you are searching it from.

Thank you for the response!
Yes the site is about plastic window, door manufacture, install and repair.
Its interesting that using OSE on one of the sites ( like this one http://www.kapu-pieminekļi.lv/) it shows only one link, and yet the site still ranks 1st for the keyword "kapu pieminekļi".
Question about blogs and social media. How often should i generally add new content to the blog? Which of the 3 social media its preferred to focus on? And how long does it usually take to see an effect on ranking?
-
Hello,
I assume from the images on your site that you install and repair windows?
I would start a social media campaign. Promote your blog and website pages on Twitter Google + or Facebook. Use Moz Followerwonk to find influencers on Twitter that you may be able to reach out to.
Non optimized websites may rank higher simply because there is not enough competition or they may have a huge link profile but their content is soft. I have seen this but it is becoming more rare. When you are doing investigative research on a competitor use OSE to see how many links are pointed at the site. You can also use this to see if there is a link opportunity for yourself. Just remember not all links are created equal. If a competitor has 80 links it does not mean you should copy their profile. Maybe only a few are relevant to you and your website or business philosophy and culture.
Keep blogging regularly and using social channels to distribute your content. If competition is light in your country you can seize the opportunity to become a thought leader and own the rankings if you try. Put together a strategy for content and stick to it!

A dumb SEO question
Is it possible for a blog to rank only with fantastic content without any purchasing of backlinks... And how long does it take (on average) to get for example 500 active readers daily?

Do spam text links count for negative seo?
I run a high-PR (or whatever we're calling it now) website builder. When you sign up, your URL is a subdomain of the main site (like yourname.foo.com). My site is lucky enough to be on the spammers radar, so they frequently create sites to get more back links. A while back, I caught onto this and neutralized their links (even though they had nofollow tags) by only displaying them as plain text instead of anchor tags. Spammers continue to sign up and create sites, even though their links are now text. My question: Are these text links still affecting my SEO negatively? Or do they know something I don't?

Hiring for SEO Outreach
Hope everyone is having a nice Labor Day! We're a family owned wine club startup and have been handling SEO in house since things didn't go well with a previous SEO company (and sure we've done plenty of bad stuff along the way as well). In any case, we're writing a blog, including video entries etc. I've been handling basic email outreach about posts (ie if I write a winery profile, asking the winery to link to it) but don't really have time to handle more significant outreach than that. Can anyone make some suggestions about where to hire someone for an outreach job like this? It would undoubtedly be part time and Elance didn't give us anyone we were comfortable with. Thanks in advance!

Use 301'd Domain for a new campaign
Hello everybody, My company is getting ready to start a new mediacampaign on a very specific subject. The mediacampaign is not directly targeted at our core business, the goal is more to inform our customers about a subject and do a little branding for our company. A nice (and expensive) infographic was built that is going to be the core content of the campaign. We want the infographic to get shared a lot and therefore some of my colleagues want the url to be as short as possible. The idea is to host the infographic on a url on our companysite, but use a 301'd, shorter domainname in our communications. We are going to be getting a lot of links to this empty 301'd domain which does nothing else then 301 to our companysite. I know that linkbuilding to a 301'd domain is an old blackhat tactic, that's the main reason I don't feel good about this. But i can't really find any info on this subject.

Web Designers and SEOs using backlinks from client sites
What are your thoughts on SEOs and web designers putting their own links in the footers of client sites. For the sake of argument, lets assume that the client is happy for the link to be there. I'm referring to the SEO merits of the link being there from an 'irrelevant' website. My belief is that this goes against what Google is looking for and that these are irrelevant links and likely to be picked up and penalised. That's what I believe! However, I see lots of sites offering SEO services that have dofollow links from their client sites, using exact match anchor text and they are all ranking highly. Is it just a matter of time before Google sniffs them out and penalises them for it? Or should I be going through my client sites and adding myself a dofollow link in the footer? (with their permission of course). The highest ranking sites in any UK city do this. If you search SEO Manchester, SEO Leeds etc and find the top ranking sites and check them out on opensite explorer, they are all using a disproportionate amount of dofollow backlinks form client sites.

SEO Tool to search mass URLs (for link qualification)
Hi, I have been using OSE and have a compiled list of backlinks to my competitor's sites. The next step would be to go through and qualify all of these links for a link opportunities for my client's site. To save me a lot of time, I require a tool that will search all of these pages (say 1000) for specific keywords in tags or body content. A search query might be - site:(URL list) intitle:directory site:(URL list) "add site" etc Any ideas would be great. Thanks.
