Is it something really obvious or is off-site link building all thats missing?

I'm trying to get a client ranked for the keyword Quaich and its like pulling teeth
This keyword performs brilliantly for adwords but I've never got it ranked at all in googles SERPs.
Last November I created this page:
http://kiltmakers.co.uk/quaich
Which ranks as A with seo-moz but still nothing.
I'm still a newbie to SEO work but can someone point me in the right direction? Is it just the domain authority that the issue - should I switch my focus to link building off-site?
-
Thanks Dana,
You've already got me thinking. I'm wondering if an totally different approach here might be creating a blog post or similar along the line of Ten Funny Facts about The Quaich - or maybe - 5 Things You Didnt Know About The Scottish Quaich. You've got me thinking already.
I'll amend that title shortly too Thanks for the tips. BTW - The client sells hundred of quaichs to the UK and America - if I can crack this keyword they should become more commonly known Oh and (it took me a while to get it) it's pronounced kwake (like awake but with a k at the start instead of an a)

I would definitely say your off-site seo would be the first place to start.
If you are new, you need to make some investment on time building links.
*There are a few ways to do something like this.
1.)You can start with free and paid directories.
=>spend sometime finding niche specific directories for free listings
=> spend sometime on premium directories
*only submit every 90 days like to 5 or 10.
*also use your brand name instead of exact anchor matches.
2.) You can try to do some custom link building by looking up blogs and building relationships with blogging experts. This is very white-hate-seo and naturally takes time. Don' get anxious in trying to get a ton of these links. Last year's algo Penguin rocked the SEO industry in over optimizing in links (the amount) and the exact match of the same anchor terms (keyword phrases) and Google devalued them.
*Try to use a variety of phrases instead of the same anchor over and over. Make your custom links look natural and do 10 - 15 each month
*Use link prospecting like "list hunting" top 10 blogging (keyword phrase) and you should be able to find websites or blogs listed as hot or the best.
*Offer to send your product or service to them for review in exchange for link.
3.) Produce better content!
->Syndicate your content with Web 2.0 bookmarking and forums.
-> Again this is also white-hate-seo and will take you time.
-> I suggest doing some research to find your users "paint-points" and making a map of your content.
This content should be well thought out. You'll need to get inside your consumers-visitors heads.
Think implicit thoughts and explicit thoughts. (Google if you don't know much about this)
Make a spreadsheet and start tracking the results you find.
*I find forums are a great place to find out these thoughts, pain-points, and your demographics.
*Great content will produce natural links for you. If it is really dynamic, you get social signals and other quality signals that will help your site rank better.
Also silo your website (Google silo website for seo) and start planning how you are going to inter-link your inner pages. The bigger the website the better. This will help in distribution of your website for other pages that you want rank or long-tail-keyword you want to target.
This should get you start; you have an arsenal of info here and research to do.
Tools:
Use Majestic SEO to study competition back-link profiles and you own as it progresses. Great way to find broken links of expired domains or against older competitors and reach-out to the webmasters they use to have links to and try to get your site's link there. All around great tool
Ahrefs is another web-based to tool to study back-links
Authority Labs will help you track many keywords you want to target. It's free for like 30 days
SEM Rush will help you study competition and counter them.
Good Luck!

Hi Robert,
First let me say that I think this is the best keyword ever! I've never heard of a Quaich and considering half my heritage is Scottish I definitely learned something new today.
Okay, for the matter at hand. Just for grins, try changing your title to "Quaich Shop | Free Delivery | kiltmakers.co.uk" - Why? Your current title has "stop" words in it (i.e. "and" "the" "with" etc.) and "Quaich Store" or "Quaich Shop" is a completely accurate description of what your page is about.
The only other suggestion I have for on-page optimization is that your article is pretty short, and basically repeats, in a substantially similar way, other information that is already on the Web about the Quaich. Write something longer, more interesting, maybe even funny (are there any Quaich jokes? lol). For such an unsually item (I'd never heard of it before and couldn't even begin to pronounce it) I'd think you could write an awesome article that doesn't just repeat other stuff that's out there.
Then see what happens.
Hope that helps!
Dana

Link's that are an internal site search?
Hi hope your're all well. I sell Red, Blue, Green Widgets within each color I have many sub types, the subtypes change all the time, and a sub type has many variations in itself. I'd like to set up links that direct customers to popular searches of sub types say: widgets.com/red/blue-spots....search string... Will Google crawl these search links and see that there is good content behind it? Â How does Google handle links that are also a site search? Â Can it be bad and should I "no follow" them? Hope someone can give me some direction on these, many thanks in advance!

I have 2 E-commerce sites - Can i cross link?
Good Morning Everyone, I have 2 e-commerce websites that are similar and sell the same products. The content (text/descriptions/titles) is different so the content is not duplicate. SITE A has a ton of blog posts with highly relevant information and we frequently update the blog with posts about the types of products we carry and how it can help people in their daily lives... SITE B has no blog posts, but the content on the blog from SITE A is extremely relevant and helpful to anyone using SITE B. My question is, do you think it is frowned upon if i were to add links on SITE B that point to specific posts on SITE A... For example, if you are browsing a category page on SITE B, i was thinking of adding links on the bottom that would say "For More Information, Please Check Out These Posts on our Blog" www.sitea.com/blog/relevantinfo1 www.sitea.com/blog/relevantinfo2 www.sitea.com/blog/relevantinfo3 I think this would seriously help our browsers and potential customers get all of the information that they need, but what do you think Google would think about this cross-linking and if it violates their guidelines? Thanks for any opinions and advice.

Shutting down a site, where do I 301 it?
I'm working with a few international sites that we are going to collapse into one main site. Our current plan is to 301 the 4 other sites into our main site home page. Is this ok? Is there a better way to do this? Thanks

How can you get the right site links for your site?
Hello all, I have been trying to get Google to list relevant site links for my site when you type in our brand name, Loco2 or for when Loco2 comes up in a search result. Different things come up when you search Loco2 and Loco 2. We would like site links to look like how they do when you search Loco 2. However Loco2 is our brand name, NOT Loco 2. Does anyone know why Google is doing this and whether we can influence results? We have done as much as possible via Google webmaster, in terms of specifying the links we DO NOT want Google to list for Loco2. However, when you search "Loco2", results only show simple site links. Ideally what we want is: Loco2 to be recognised as the brand NOT Loco 2 The same results (substantial, identical) for Loco2 as for Loco 2 (think o2 and o 2) For the site links to reflect the main pages of our site (Times & Tickets, Engine Room forum etc.) Many thanks in advance! Anila

We have been keeping other sites on our domain while we build them for clients and not taking them off afterwards
So when I look in wmt its telling me our site is about fish oil etc when we are web designers. We have blocked these pages in robots text and removed them. WMT is showing 500 errors in crawl errors and telling us we have health issues on our site. what should we do and how do i bulk select these errors is wmt  to mark as fixed (if they are fixed)

Duplicate Content Issues - Should I build a new site?
I'm currently working on a site which is built using Zen Cart. The client also has another version which has the same products on it. The product descriptions and the vast majority of the text has been re-written. I've used the duplicate content tool and these are the results: HTML fingerprint: 0000a7ee1f07a131 0000a7ec1f07a931 92.31% Total HTML similarity: 76.33% Standard text similarity: 66.72% Smart text similarity: 45.81% Total text similarity 56.27% I considered using a different eCommerce system like Magento or Volusion. So I had a look at a few templates, chose one and then used the tool again and got the following: HTML fingerprint: 0000a7e41b012111 0000a7ec1f07a931 72.00% Total HTML similarity: 64.65% Standard text similarity: 11.69% Smart text similarity: 17.90% Total text similarity 14.80% Do you think its worth doing this? thanks Dan

Should I create mini-sites with keyword rich domain names pointing to my main site?
Hi, I'm new to seomoz (and seo in general) and loving it so far. My main domain name is more of a brandname than a search engine friendly list of keywords. I rank well for some keywords I optimized for, and less so for the more competitive keywords. I was wondering if making one page minisites hosted on keyword rich domain names could help in this respect? What I want to do is just have a single page with a few paragraphs of content and links to the main site. I am not looking for links to boost the main site, just for the minisites to do better for several keywords. Will this help? Is this ok, or against some Google policy? Can this hurt the main site rankings? Thank you! **Edit: **I noticed that sites ranking above me on the first page for some keywords have much less on-page elements than my page, have about the same domain trust and also very little inbound links. The only factor I can see is the exact match of keywords in the domain name.
