What constitutes duplicate content on a page?
-
I am working on SEO for a Shopify store. Their products are very similar, hence the pages are so similar that Moz shows them as duplicate content. The only difference in the product pages is the title and model number. I am going to "go for the gold" and try re-writing all the product descriptions. It's incredibly difficult due to the products being nearly identical with just a minor variation. I know I could go down the road of just creating variants --- but the customer is not down for that.
Here's my question: what constitutes duplicate content? 80% of the content, 90%????
If I can going to re-write the descriptions, what should I aim for?
Thank you!

If you're not trying to rank, then you may not need to prioritize fixing this.
Duplicate content isn't a penalty; it's a risk. The risk is that more than one page on your site will seem appropriate in response to a particular search query and Google might 1) rank the wrong one, or 2) "decide" it's not clear and rank neither. If these aren't pages you'd expect or want to show up in search results anyway, then you can feel free simply to put together a page that'll provide the best experience for the user.

I am not trying to rank both pages - I am trying to create unique pages for each product. The complicated part is that they are tile. So a tile is made of the same material, same process for making them, used in the same application, and have the same size. So there are 1000 tiles that are very similar. The only slight variance is their color, part number and potentially if they have a pattern on them - such as a flower. Inside the set, there may be 100 tiles that have flowers. so it gets a bit difficult to write a description when so many things are the same about each tile.

Hi Steve! I'm not positive what Google considers duplicate, but I can tell you that our tools flag pages as duplicate when ≥90% of the source code (including content) matches. It's likely that we're more sensitive to it than Google is, which is intentional.
Out of curiosity, are you trying to rank both of these pages?

Hi-
I wouldn't being to guess the % needed, but I can tell you one way that we try to get around the issue with similar products. We added a "short description" section with bullet points to highlight all the questions people might ask about the product and in there we are very specific about color, shape, flavor etc. When we have similar products (say different flavored gummi bears) we list both basic facts about the product that are all the same (i.e. size, how many per bag) as well as listing the other attributes that are unique to that product (i.e. banana flavored, yellow colored) and that seems to be enough to keep us from a duplicate content penalty. It's also nice because it cuts down customer questions.
Just a thought

Hey Steve,
First question: How similar are these products? Are they the same but with color/trim/size differences? Have you had the conversation about canonicalization or are they not that similar?
Regarding duplication: I wouldn't look at it from a percentage standpoint, and if I did, I'd aim for 0-20% duplication with the assumption that 20% dupe was due to sentence beginnings and common intro phrases such as "If you're looking for....", which even as I look at that, I'd want to fix (because they're ubiquitous). Focus on the five Ws (who, what, where, when, why and how) and answer each one of those the best that you can, with the product's uses and why each model is different in mind.
Is there a way you can discuss the different use cases for each model number? Highlight benefits and applications? When people look for your product, what else are they searching for or concerned about?

Form Only Pages Considered No Content/Duplicate Pages
We have a lot of WordPress sites with pages that contain only a form. The header, sidebar and footer content is the same as what's one other pages throughout the site. Each form page has a unique page title, meta description, form title and questions but the form title, description and questions add up to probably less than 100 words. Are these form pages negatively affecting the rankings of our landing pages or being viewed as duplicate or no content pages?

Ranked page is not desired page
I have a question on a problem I am currently faced with. There is a certain keyword that my employer wants to rank for. The good news is that sometimes it does rank in the top 5 pages of Google. (It drops in and out) The bad news is that it is going to a page that we need to keep, but not the ideal place we want people who are looking for that keyword to go to. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this type of situation and what tactic they used to get people to the better page.

Help: my WordPress Blog generates too many onpage links and duplicate content
I have a WordPress Blog since November last year (so I'm pretty new to WordPress) and the effects on ranking for some keywords are really good. So I thought tag clouds are good. Crawl Diagnostics tell me now that I have too many onpage links for example my author page breaks the record: 256

http://inlinear.com/blog/author/inlinear/ I think thats because there are links for each word in the tag cloud generated ... On this page (and many other pages) WordPress displays (teasers) the beginning of each post (read more ...) producing duplicate content and even new canonical tags.... The page titles are also too long because I installed "All in One SEO Pack" and now this plugin and wordpress itself mixes titles together ... But what can I do to avoid all this. Is there a PlugIn that can help... I think millions of blogs will have the same problems... I my blog yet has very few content. Thanks for your answers :))0 -

Duplicate Page Titles and Keywords
Still new to this SEO world, so please bear with me. I have an eCommerce site so one of the issues is duplicate content and page titles. So what I was thinking was this...for each product that I sell I have 4 or 5 keywords that I have targeted. For example for personalized iPhone cases I have decided on: iphone 4 case personalized, monogrammed iphone 4 case, personalized and monogrammed iphone case, preppy phone case, personalized iPhone case, monogrammed iPhone case For each of my products I was going to a product description (ie: trendy color block diagonal stripes) and a targeted keyword. But I was going to rotate the keywords through so as to try to avoid the duplicate page title issue. Will that help? Thanks much, Shara

Notonthehighstreet.co.uk - duplicate content? a reason to not sell via 3rd parties
A mixture of questions and discussion Question 1. can the following two pages be considered duplicate content http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/gardenbeet/product/deer-head-wall-art http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/1/1/219933-deer-head-wall-art-by-garden-beet.html both pages are indexed and both pages have different meta - aimed at different search combinations Discussion The search for 'deer head wall art gardenbeet' is generated by my PR company - we have done loads of print advertising for this item yet the sheer mass and volume of noths.com stops my store http://www.gardenbeet.com/garden-wall-art/58-deer-head.html from obtaining the number one position. All is fair in the business world I suppose BUT the original marketing machine for noths.com was claiming that they were assisting the small business owner. I paid them over £600 to join and now they compete with me head on. Stupid me I suppose. Let this be a key learning for those toying with the idea of investing in their own SEO or a 3rd party selling platform. Ho hum

Archetecture to avoid content duplicate
Hi, I have lots of duplicate stuff and I need a better site architecture. http://www.furnacefilterscanada.com/ We are selling furnace filters. All furnace filters are sold in 50 different sizes, each sizes comes in 3 different qualities, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Total: 150 products. Right now I have created many categories and subcategories for furnace filters sizes. When the client pickup is sizes, he will end-up to the products page with 3 different options, Bronze, Silver and Gold. They can then compare the filter a select the one he wants to purchase. The problem is, it is not possible to provide different content for each filters, Gold has a description, Silver has another one and also Bronze. The only text that will change in the descriptions, is the filter size. This makes Duplicates text description. Not good when you what to index your site. The positive things to 150 different products, is the page title. example 16x25x4 furnace filters. Those exacte tem get search in Google. A new site architecture with 3 categories, Gold, Silver and Bronze & 50 variables by products (filters sizes) might not be the best options, because no filter size will be index. Can you please help me to find the best architecture in a SEO point of view? Also what about the top navigation bar menu, what is the best options in using it? Right now it is use for Legal, Contact, Policy and I fill it is a wast, those page only get less then 1% clicks. It might be more convenient to use those for categories for example, what is your recommendations in a SEO point of view? Can I create a information page in the left navigation menu and includ all the standard page, like: Policy, Legal ... If I do, will I get penalize by Google? Thank you for your help. We have puts lots of money in AdWords before, but now the next step is to come home organics. I'm using SEOmoz tools, read there new book, and I want increase traffic. I just need your help. Thank you, BigBlaze
