Advice regarding latest Google Algo Update please, if possible...
-
Hi there
I wonder if anyone can advise on this.
Since the latest google update on 1st Sept or whenever it rolled out, we noticed an initial spike in hits on our site, which was great. However now we are noticing levels going back to where they were and less people visiting the site. It also seems to be very sporadic. So we have a period of say a couple of hours with no one on the site, then suddenly loads visiting. We have also noticed a big dip in enquiries, despite the site having roughly the same amount of visitors.
All our stats on Moz, Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs, Serpfox and various other rank trackers are showing that we have had an increase in visibility on our tracked keywords. There is a definite spike on all, but where is our traffic and where are our enquiries? Usually we are able to work out where the problem is when updates occur but with this we have no idea.
We are utterly baffled. Is this normal? Is this just fluctuations and will settle down? Has anyone else noticed weird things happening?
If anyone has any ideas or experience of this then would be most grateful for any advice. Feeling rather desperate at the moment.
Many thanks in advance.

See how it goes in the next few days Clojo and if it doesn't settle down, perhaps start taking a look at the site in a little more detail. Perhaps the recent update pushed a button on your site for Google and they are reindexing?
Hard to tell at this stage sadly.

I have had a look and most people are still landing on our homepage, which is where are key search terms point.
None of it really makes any sense to me. Like you say really strange. The other thing we have noticed over the last couple of days is that we have a floury of visitors and then nothing. So really up and down. No consistency. Maybe we are dropping out of the search altogether and then reappearing, which is why the reporting is picking up the visibility. So for instance this morning we have nothing and this afternoon we seem to be picking up again. It was the same yesterday. Usually there is consistency and it can't just be a coincidence that the update happened at the same time.
I read that possibly Google maybe testing the update (possibly penguin). Some people are reporting that spammy sites are suddenly ranking? http://www.seo21.co.uk/google-algo-update/spam-is-back-the-latest-google-algorithm-update-apparently-loves-link-spam/
I am still scratching my head...ALOT! Lol!

Like we are coming up for the wrong search terms or something?
That is very strange Clojo. It there were no change, I wouldn't be bothered, but what you mention about the wrong search terms, you have me wondering if you are being seen for more, but perhaps the wrong phrases?
Have you looked in analytics at where people are dropping off the site? If you do a comparison of dates, you might be able to narrow it down a bit more.

Thanks Andy. That's great. I'll have a look.
Well, this is the strange thing, analytics seem to be roughly the same as they were last week. So we having similar amount of hits per day. Plus, like I say, all the stats are showing that we are going up rather than down?
See attached.
It just seems to be fluctuation massively. Site is the same. Just adding posts every few days as always. It is almost like the visitors aren't finding what they are looking for. Like we are coming up for the wrong search terms or something? It is so random.

It is frustrating as Google haven't told us what this is yet, which makes me think it's a change to the main ranking algorithm. All we do know, it is definitely isn't Penguin.
Some are saying search quality, others are saying it's local, but it is all just speculation right now, and we might never know for sure.
Have a read of this for a little more info: http://searchengineland.com/library/google/google-algorithm-updates
If you look at your analytics, do you notice the same fluctuations there?

What are tips for ranking on Google Maps?
I have another thread going where everyone is saying to keep both the Places profile as well as the Google Plus Local profile I have for my company. I have another person telling me that it has a negative effect to have both accounts at the same time so I'm assuming thats why the listing never comes up on places unless you zoom all the way into the map to the address of the storefront. With that being said, can anyone provide some good tips for ranking first page on google maps? What do you think Google analyzes for SERP ranking?
I've been doing some research trying to figure out how the Google algorithm works. The one thing that is constant is that nothing is constant. This makes me believe that Google takes a variable that all sites have and divides it by that number. One example would be taking the load time in MS and dividing it by the total number or points the website scored. This would give all of the websites a random appearance since there that variable would throw off all the other constants. I'm going to continue doing research but I was wondering what you guys think matters in the Google Algorithm. -Shane

Geolocation: Google only crawls from the US
A question was previously asked about geo-location and specifically if Google crawled from other countries. I could not locate the original question but wanted to share the below information. As of earlier this year Google only crawls from US IP addresses: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7paVYBgH0Hw

Website "penalized" 3 times by Google
I have a website that I'm working with that has had the misfortune of gaining rankings/traffic on Google, then having the rankings/traffic removed...3 times! (Very little was changed on the site to gain or lose "favor" with Google, either.) Notes: Site is a mixture of high quality original content and duplicate content (vacation rental listings) When traffic crashes, we lose nearly all rankings and traffic (90+%) When traffic crashes, we lose all rankings sitewide, including those gained by our high quality, unique pages None of the "crash" dates appear to coincide with any Panda update dates We are working on adding unique content to our pages with duplicate content, but it's a long process and so far doesn't seem to have made any difference I'm confounded why Google keeps "changing its mind" about our site We have an XML sitemap, and Google keeps our site indexed pretty well, even when we lose our rankings Due to the drastic and sitewide loss of rankings, I'm assuming we are dealing with some sort of algorithmic penalty Timeline: Traffic steadily grows starting in Jan 2011 Traffic crashes on Feb 19, 2011. We assumed it was due to a pre-panda anti-scraper update, but don't know. Google sends traffic to our site on March 1, then none the next day On June 16th, I block part of the site using robots.txt (most of the section wasn't indexed anyway) On June 17th, Google starts ranking our site again. I thought it might be due to the robots.txt change, but I had just made the change a few hours ago, and Google wasn't even indexing the part of the site I blocked Traffic/rankings crash again on July 6th. No theory why. Site URL: http://www.floridaisbest.com Traffic Stats: Attached I know that we need more backlinks and less duplicate content, but I can't explain why our Google rankings are "on again, off again". I have never seen a site gain and lose all of its rankings/traffic so drastically multiple times, for no apparent reason. Any thoughts or ideas would be welcome. Thanks! t8IqB

Google results on an Ipad 2
Has anyone else seen different google organic results for a site when viewing on an Ipad compared to computer browser ? I've just checked a site and were no1 on google when searched on the Ipad 2 but when searched on my Macbook we are page 2 ? Could this just be different data centers or do google serve up different results to the 2 devices ? Would be really interested to know if anyone else has seen this. JP
