When the site's entire URL structure changed, should we update the inbound links built pointing to the old URLs?
-
We're changing our website's URL structures, this means all our site URLs will be changed. After this is done, do we need to update the old inbound external links to point to the new URLs? Yes the old URLs will be 301 redirected to the new URLs too. Many thanks!

In a perfect world if we could control all the links that link to our site we would have them link to the new URLs. However what I was trying to illustrate is that when you change your URL there is a method of making sure that the old directly which are going to be pointing to your older URL structure Wilburn point to your new URL structure via 301 redirect.
Considering you are changing the URLs with links e.g example.com/old must 301 redirect to example.com/new

Thank you very much, Tom!
What I also want to know is, the many external links which linking to the site's older URLs, after the URL changes (and 301 direct), is it necessary to change the links built on the other sites to point to the new URLs instead of the old URLs? If not, what's the disadvantages? This is also a problem many experience after switching to https.

They are exactly right as long as the page is the same page. You will get a proper 301 without loss of link juice.
However, if you create new URLs that are not relevant to the old URLs and 301 redirects them, they will become a soft 404 error something that is dangerous.
I would index my site using https://deepcrawl.com or https://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/seo-spider/
Take the URLs that I am going to change along with the back links and download them to a CSV file.
After that, I would take the site with the new URL structure And compare it my old URL structure
You can also upload your backlinks and make sure that they are going to the same URL ID you can compare the two using deep crawl or upload using screaming frog
This would allow you to synchronize your changes.

TEST YOUR NEW XML SITEMAP
Testing a new XML Sitemap before you put it live means you can see whether any important URLs are missing from the new version, and also whether your new version is looking as expected.
(DeepCrawl: Put your legacy URLs in the sitemap and only start highlighting URLs from your new site once they have been indexed. This may take up to three months).
CRAWL THE NEW SITE WITH MODIFIED URLS
You can replace any absolute links to your live site with URLs from your staging site using the URL Rewrite function. This is useful if you are adding a specific section to your site and want to test how it will perform within the wider context of your site architecture.

I hope this helps

Hi Jade.
Best case scenario you should if you can update the URL of the links.
Considering that there will be 301 redirects, the loss will not be that much. There's a blog post of Cyrus Shepard talking about the impact of redirects and states that the PR loss is about 15%.

Best luck.

Will changing category URLs on site hurt SEO?
Hi Moz Community, We're looking to replace some URLs on our Wordpress site and I want to make sure we won't hurt our SEO with the changes. The site is lushpalm.com When we originally launched our site we created pages (which are linked to in our main menu) to essentially display our categories. We did this as a workaround because we didn’t like the URL to have the word “category” in it. Now we would like to make some changes and we want to make sure we’re not going to hurt our SEO in any way by accidentally duplicating content or otherwise. We want to fix our structure and now link to our category pages from our main menu, BUT we want to change the URL of the category page so that it doesn’t have “category” in it, essentially renaming it the name of the page currently linked to in our main menu. So basically, the category lushpalm.com/category/surf-trips, would be renamed with the URL lushpalm.com/surf-trips and the current page that is at lushpalm.com/surf-trips would be therefore replaced. My questions are: If we did this, would that mean that the previous “lushpalm.com/category/surf-trips” would cease to exist? Or is there some imprint of that out on the web? And if it is then would it re-direct to the new page? Would replacing the current page URL with a category hurt our current SEO in any way? Would this change cause any duplicate pages somehow? Thanks so much for your help!

How can I find all broken links pointing to my site?
I help manage a large website with over 20M backlinks and I want to find all of the broken ones. What would be the most efficient way to go about this besides exporting and checking each backlink's reponse code? Thank you in advance!

Changing old style WP menu built with child pages or not?
Hi Mozzers, the very old theme of my client's site doesn't support the new WP menus, so the menu structure is built in the old way, with parent and child pages. For example the page whose url is www.site.com/rent/ is top level and the sub pages are like www.site.com/rent/cars/ or www.site.com/rent/trucks/ Also there are third generation pages like www.site.com/rent/cars/fiat500/ Since I am changing the theme, I am going to use the new WP menu system and I'd like to know if this parent/child url structure may hurt link equity propagation. My question is: should I detach the child pages from the parents and, according to that, change the urls of the child pages from:

www.site.com/rent/cars/ to www.site.com/rent-cars/ (and of course 301 redirect them) ? Or is it ok to leave the pages' url in the old parenting way? What is the best practice? Thank you very much! DoMiSoL Rossini0 -
OSE link report showing links to 404 pages on my site
I did a link analysis on this site mormonwiki.com. And many of the pages shown to be linked to were pages like these http://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Planning_a_trip_to_Rome_By_using_Movie_theatre_-_Your_five_Fun_Shows2052752 There happens to be thousands of them and these pages actually no longer exist but the links to them obviously still do. I am planning to proceed by disavowing these links to the pages that don't exist. Does anyone see any reason to not do this, or that doing this would be unnecessary? Another issue is that Google is not really crawling this site, in WMT they are reporting to have not crawled a single URL on the site. Does anyone think the above issue would have something to do with this? And/or would you have any insight on how to remedy it?

Competitior 'scraped' entire site - pretty much - what to do?
I just discovered a competitor in the insurance lead generation space has completely copied my client's site's architecture, page names, titles, even the form, tweaking a word or two here or there to prevent 100% 'scraping'. We put a lot of time into the site, only to have everything 'stolen'. What can we do about this? My client is very upset. I looked into filing a 'scraper' report through Google but the slight modifications to content technically don't make it a 'scraped' site. Please advise to what course of action we can take, if any. Thanks,

Is it OK to have a site that has some URLs with hyphens and other, older, legacy URLs that use underscores?
I'm working with a VERY large site that has recently been redesigned/recategorized. They kept only about 20% of the URLs from the legacy site, the URLs that had revenue tied to them, and these URLs use underscores. Whereas the new URLs created for the site use hyphens. I don't think that this would be an issue for Google, as long as the pages are of quality, but I wanted to get everyone's opinion on this. Will it hurt me to have two different sets of URLs, those with using hyphens and those using underscores?
