Help with understanding how to target keywords not in content ?
-
I have a customer suggesting the use of keywords related to his competitors but not in the content of his site or how he promotes his brand. The page content is product specific and I use keyword matches for page and site strength.
1.) Does it hurt or help to load up the keywords with misc. keywords
(example- the site is for a premium product use the terms "cheap", "affordable")
2.) Any suggestion for almost blank/generic landing pages ?
3.) Any benefit or penalty for using fewer keywords on multiple pages ?
(example - target 6-8 words on 30 pages)
I need a few discussion points for my next meeting and to clarify my position.
-
Thanks for your time, I will take your suggestions and start implementing for areas that need help.
-
Thank you for your response, I will follow up on your additional material. My talking points with my customer are very similar to your answers.
When a customer continually asks for a technique that is not valid I needed some reassurance of my strategy.
Again Thank You for your time.

Howdy,
Generally, it's a bad idea to target keywords not in your content. If feels spammy, you're not likely to rank for it, and it's likely to have a negative impact on user experience.
Imaging clicking on a search results about "Competitor X Keyword Keyword" - and then the landing page has virtually nothing to do with my search. Well a couple things will happen...
- The visitor leaves and clicks another result - Search engines quickly learn your site doesn't satisfy the query
- This probably won't even happen because search engines aren't that easily fooled. It's hard enough to rank with quality, engaging content. Putting some keywords in your title tag (or elsewhere) without all the other ranking signals to back it up - including quality content, links and more, probably isn't going to help you to rank.
I think you get my gist, but let me address your specific points.
1.) Does it hurt or help to load up the keywords with misc. keywords
Again, it sounds spammy, and keyword stuffing is a tactic that hasn't worked well since 2007.
Lessons Learned from an Over-Optimizer
2.) Any suggestion for almost blank/generic landing pages ?
Add useful, relevant content.
Duplicate Content is a Post-Panda Word
3.) Any benefit or penalty for using fewer keywords on multiple pages ?
A general rule of thumb is optimize your page for keywords so that 80% of searchers using those keywords have the same general intent. If 70% are looking for one thing, and 30% something else, it's best to split those into 2 different pages.
It sounds like your customer should focus more on conversions instead of raw traffic. It might help to guide the client to go for quality of traffic instead of quantity, which usually pays better dividends.
Finally, a couple of more resources that might help understand on-page optimization. I recommend you take 30 minutes and read/watch them all!

http://www.seomoz.org/blog/4-graphics-to-help-illustrate-onpage-optimization

This should give you plenty of ammunition for your talk with your client. Besst of luck!

If I have understood this correctly you wish to rank a page for terms that you are not going to use on the visible part of the page.
Using the Meta Keywords tag will not help as this is a tag that Google no longer looks at
Every landing page needs to ad value to the visitors experience, you need to have a reason for having the page on the site and to help get better rankings is not an acceptable reason.
You can target 6 - 8 related keywords on an individual page as long as their is relevant content on the page and it makes sense when you read it. This would only be practical for the longer tail or keywords with very little competition
I hope this helps

Competing Pages for Ranking Keywords?
Hey there, My client has this existing page which ranks for rentals-related keywords that are product type specific - i.e. electric wheelchair rentals, mobility scooter rentals, etc. https://mobilityequipmentforless.com/pages/rentals I recently made a rentals page for each product type to try and really target those keywords that the rentals page is ranking for. Is this a problem? Is the potential nature of the pages competing for the keywords a real issue? Any help is appreciated. Thanks! Mike

Optimizing a Webpage without keywords
Hi all, I’m really running into a challenge internally lately in that we have a lot of teams redesigning or building new pages (specificially one team) that do NOT loop our teams in. When we finally get them to work with us, to drive traffic to the pages, they disagree that there must be other ways of optimizing the pages than focusing on keywords with search volume that are relevant to the page. We usually land that they will choose a keyword or two they think a user will search for, we do keyword research and pick something close (because they don’t want to utilize a term that doesn’t make much sense, as they have written the content without involving us from the beginning, but then our search volume is declining). They keep saying there are other ways than changing the paired down content on their page and adding in keywords to the H1 headers, content on page. they mentioned semantic search at one point. For example, https://www.entrust.com/products/entrust-getaccess/ currently ranks around #10 for "single sign on solution." This keyword was on the previous page quite a few times in headers and body copy. Now it appears on the page 3 times after the redesign and is not in the h1. The team does for example want to optimize for this term, but there’s lots of pushback as they want a page with minimal content and little design. Just wondering your thoughts on this. IS this a common challenge you deal with too and any idea on answers as I've tried many with the teams? Thanks, Laura

Google Keyword Planner - Just PPC?
Morning Mozzers, Please help a layman learn. This is probably a silly question but when I look at keyword search data in Google's Keyword Planner Tool and I see "COMPETITIVE" or "LOW" am I looking at all searches inclusive of organic and PPC? I have been a bit confused by logging in through an Adwords account? At the moment to get my keyword research I am using a combination of Moz, Webmaster Tools, Keyword Planner. I have had a look at the free version of SEMrush which looks really cool. Is my approach right using these tools? Am I covering all bases / missing key opportunities? Regards Ben

Google search not grouping keywords properly
When is a 'Repair' not a 'Repair'...? When it's a "Service" (... cue rapturous applause and laughter!) We run an air conditioning website and we have recently noticed that Google is assuming the keyword "Repair" also means "Service". For example if you type in (in the UK) "Air Conditioner Repair" the first page of Google it puts the word "Service" in bold. E.g: 1. Check this before calling for air conditioner service - YouTube 2. Halfords Autocentres| Air Conditioning Service for all car makes and 3. Service Your Air Conditioner for Summer Comfort « Sustainable Now... why do I find this annoying. I had a amicable dispute with a colleague last year before all of this happened. I noticed that our Google Adwords campaign was showing a high bounce rate for our /air_conditioning_service page. He explained to me that if someone wanted and 'air conditioning service' it was because they wanted their air conditioning fixed / cleaned etc. My argument was that a fair few of the people bouncing off were actually looking for a company to provide a service (of air conditioning) that they were looking for. We split the page in half (half linking through to a repair page and the other half to a page about the service that we offer) and ran a test against the original. I was only expecting a small percentage of people to click on the new option we had added to the page, however, the difference was far greater than ever expected. It was a 60/40% split in favour of the new option not people wanting their aircon repaired/serviced! So in conclusion... very annoyingly, Google is recognising my service page rather than my far more relevant repair page, and there seems to be nothing I can do about it (other than make my service page more relevant) Rant over... but has anyone else experienced anything similar? Is there anything you can do about it?

Newbie question about keyword difficulty tool
Hi guys, It's my first day here ate seomoz and I got intrigued about the results from the keyword difficulty tool. Even though I do understand the results, I noticed the ranking analysis table has some highlighted cells and some of them have a dark checkmark sign inside. What exactly do they mean? I couldn't find it anywhere. Cheers from Brazil. i0tzl.png
