Changing URLS: from a short well optimised URL to a longer one – What's the traffic risk
-
I'm working with a client who has a website that is relatively well optimised, thought it has a pretty flat structure and a lot of top level pages.
They've invested in their content over the years and managed to rank well for key search terms.
They're currently in the process of changing CMS and as a result of new folder structuring in the CMS the URLs for some pages look to have significantly changed.
E.g Existing URL is: website.com/grampians-luxury-accommodation which ranked quite well for luxury accommodation grampians
New URL when site is launched on new CMS would be website.com/destinations/victoria/grampians
My feeling is that the client is going to lose out on a bit of traffic as a result of this. I'm looking for information or ways or case studies to demonstrate the degree of risk, and to help make a recommendation to mitigate risk.

There's some good news about 301 redirects that you may have missed: Since early/mid 2016, changing the directory structure (alone) and creating 301 redirects isn't going to (or shouldn't) cause any loss in PageRank.
The fact that 301s generally resulted in a loss of around 15% of PageRank (which was confirmed by Matt Cutts in 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Filv4pP-1nw) is simply no longer the case.
Sceptical? So was I. Read on...
In February 2016, Google Web Trend Analyst, John Mueller confirmed this:
Q. Do I lose "link juice" from the redirects?
A. No, for 301 or 302 redirects from HTTP to HTTPS no PageRank is lost.
(Source: https://plus.google.com/+JohnMueller/posts/PY1xCWbeDVC)
Further, Google's Gary Illyes confirmed this in July 2016, on twitter:
"30x redirects don't lose PageRank anymore."
(Source: https://twitter.com/methode/status/757923179641839616?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)(Bear in mind, PR is not the only ranking signal.)
So, changing URLs for SEO purposes, including "Improving directory/subfolder structure" is considered less risky now that 301 redirects preserve PageRank (as long as the content and structure remains the same).
There's a great article on the subject of 301 redirect rules: "301 Redirects Rules Change: What You Need to Know for SEO" here: https://moz.com/blog/301-redirection-rules-for-seo
Remember: For this to work out for you, the content of the page at the receiving end of the 301 needs to match the original source as closely as possible.
Good luck!

Thanks James, appreciate the speedy response. I found huge amounts of information on URL structure, but many varying points of view and nothing I could relate specifically to the situation.
The site does have a good amount of content for each state and region landing page – which are all top level in the current flat structure at the moment.
There are over 100 different regions, so I did feel that there would be value in the directory that the digital agency had recommended, but also felt there is a risk (large) of traffic loss introducing the new sub-directory / hierarchical structure. General rule of thumb being 15% PR loss for any URL changes...
So I'm trying to do a bit of a risk / benefit analysis – what the client may lose in traffic initially, will they gain back overtime.

All urls seem to exist (no 404 errors) but they don't.
Hello I am doing a SEO auditing for a website which only has a few pages. I have no cPanel credentials, no FTP no Wordpress admin account, just watching it from the outside. The site works, the Moz crawler didn't report any problem, I can reach every page from the menu. The problem is that - except for the few actual pages - no matter what you type after the domain name, you always reach the home page and don't get any 404 error. I.E. Http://domain.com/oiuxyxyzbpoyob/ (there is no such a page, but i don't get 404 error, the home is displayed and the url in the browser remains Http://domain.com/oiubpoyob/, so it's not a 301 redirect). Http://domain.com/WhatEverYouType/ (same) Could this be an important SEO issue (i.e. resulting in infinite amount of duplicate content pages )? Do you think I should require the owner to prevent this from happening? Should I look into the .htaccess file to fix it ? Thank you Mozers!

404's and Ecommerce - Products no longer for sale
Hi We regularly have products which are no longer sold and discontinued. As we have such a large site, webmaster tools regularly picks up new 404's. These 404 pages aren't linked to from anywhere on the site any longer, however WMT will still report them as errors. Does this affect site authority? Thank you

How careful do you need to be about changes to readable URLs?
We are moving to Sitecore where the standard out the box is that if you change page title it amends the URL as well. I am worried that this will lead to SEO issues and am considering whether we need to get it locked down so that if the page title is amended (only in a minor way) it does not also change the URL. I have never worked with readable URLs before - what are the implications of the URL not exactly matching the wording of the page title?

What's better ...more or less linking C-blocks?
I'm a little confused about c-blocks, I've been reading about them but I still don't get it. Are these similar to sitewide links? do they have to come from websites that I own and hosted in the same ip? and finally, what's better ...more or less linking c-blocks? Cheers 🙂

Getting out of Google's Penguin
Hi all, my site www.uniggardin.dk has lost major rankings on the searchengine google.dk. Went from rank #2-3 on important keywords to my site, and after the latest update most of my rankings have jumped to #12 - #20. This is so annoying, and I really have no idea what to do. Can it cause bad links to my site? In that case what will I have to do? Thanks in advance,

Can I, in Google's good graces, check for Googlebot to turn on/off tracking parameters in URLs?
Basically, we use a number of parameters in our URLs for event tracking. Google could be crawling an infinite number of these URLs. I'm already using the canonical tag to point at the non-tracking versions of those URLs....that doesn't stop the crawling tho. I want to know if I can do conditional 301s or just detect the user agent as a way to know when to NOT append those parameters. Just trying to follow their guidelines about allowing bots to crawl w/out things like sessionID...but they don't tell you HOW to do this. Thanks!

Meeting Google's needs 100% with dynamic pages
We have bought into a really powerful search, very exciting We can define really detailed product based 'landing pages' by creating a search that pulles on required attributeseghttp://www.OURDOMAIN.com//search/index.php?sortprice=asc&followSearch=9673&q=red+coats+short-length Pop that in a link Short Red Coats on a previous page and wonderful, that gives a page of short red coats in price ascending order, one happy consumer, straight to a page that meets their needs Question 1 however unhappy Google right? Question 2 can we meet Google's needs 100% with a redirect permanent in an .htaccess file E.G redirect permanent /short-red-coats/ http://www.OURDOMAIN.com//search/index.php?sortprice=asc&followSearch=9673&q=red+coats+short-length
