Not showing up in search results for non-branded terms
-
Hello!
Can anyone see any glaring reasons why this post: "98 Book Marketing Ideas That Can Help Authors Increase Sales" isn't on page one of Google — or even page 10! — for the term "book marketing ideas"?
Many other sites with lower domain and page authority — even ones linking to this article — are ranking on the first ten pages for this term, and I can't figure out why we're not appearing anywhere. The same thing is happening for ALL of our other blog posts, and the keywords they're optimized for. According to GA, the only terms we're getting clicks from are branded keywords.
This subdomain is now 2 years old, and the domain bookbub.com has been around for 5 years. Our domain authority is 61. We have the Yoast SEO plugin installed and are following all the standard SEO best practices. We have enough external links to at least be ranking within the first 10 pages of this Google search. I feel like there's something technically wrong, maybe in the code or backend, but nobody here can figure it out, and our hosting provider WP Engine has no ideas.
Moz is returning crawl errors on our site, mainly "Error Code 804: HTTPS (SSL) Error Encountered" and "Error Code 803: Incomplete HTTP Response Received." I have confirmed with WP Engine that everything is set up correctly on our end, and that this is a known Moz issue. I've reached out to Moz's support team about this, and am awaiting a response.
But what else am I missing? There's got to be something — I've been blogging for 10 years for different companies and my own personal websites, and I've never come across anything like this before. I'm completely stuck! I'd appreciate any insights you can offer. Thanks in advance!
EDIT: I heard back from Moz on those errors.
The 804 errors are a Moz-side issue — their crawler isn't equipped to be able to handle SNI. They're looking into a resolution, and this wouldn't affect search engine crawlers.
Regarding the 803 error: "When you see an 803 error, that means your site closed its TCP connection to our crawler before our crawler could read a complete HTTP response. You don't see this error when you go to the page in your browser because content-length is an outdated component for modern browsers and they will disregard this error, but the intention of our crawler is to report any errors that might be occurring. So the crawler is configured to detect and report such errors."
The only thing I can think to do here is go back to WP Engine with this information, but other than that, I'm not sure what this could mean or how to fix it, or if this might be the underlying technical issue keeping us from ranking.

Hello, thanks for your suggestion! I've double checked all of these items. The only ones I needed to take action on were:
#4 - some of the internal links in our oldest blog posts were still linking to the http:// version, so I installed https://wordpress.org/plugins/ssl-insecure-content-fixer/ to automatically fix those hyperlinks site-wide.
#6 - I updated a couple URLs in our Twitter bio and Facebook page.
I can see how fixing these two issues could help improve our site's rankings, but I'm still doubtful that these two issue have caused our site to be completely unfindable for non-branded terms on search engines though. Would love to hear any other ideas people have!

It would also be worth running through a best practice guide for implementing HTTPS on this site, as this can cause problems with link dilution etc. if not carried out correctly:
- Ensure your HTTPS site version is added in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. In Google Search Console, add both the www and non-www versions. Set your preferred domain under the HTTPS versions.
- 301 redirect HTTP URL versions to their HTTPS versions sitewide.
- Ensure all internal links point to the HTTPS version URLs sitewide.
- Ensure canonical tags point to the HTTPS URL versions.
- Ensure your XML Sitemap includes the HTTPS URL versions.
- Ensure all external links to your site that are under your control, such as social profiles, point to the HTTPS URL versions.

Sorry, I was editing my reply to include the 804 stuff when when yours came in.
I understand that your priority is ranking the bookbub version, not your blog. One can't help but suspect that something may be amiss with/on the site, but it's not good practice to speculate too much before we investigate.
Let's see if we can't use the power of Moz and find what the issue is...

Well no... that doesn't really count as the post itself ranking. That post on my personal blog is simply a summary and link to the full post. What this indicates to me is that something is technically wrong on https://insights.bookbub.com, since my personal blog summary is ranking, like you pointed out. I'm just not sure what that technical problem is.
Also, I heard back from Moz on those errors. Will edit my original question above with their response.
Thanks for responding!

Weil, it is ranking - just not where you want it to - it's 15th on Google.co.uk for "book marketing ideas" - under a domain you may be very familiar with http://dianaurban.com/98-book-marketing-ideas-for-authors - (and 11th for the US).
That may be helpful as it gives something to compare against after all, Google clearly doesn't have any particular issue with the bulk of the content itself.
At a glance, the results in On-Page Grader (https://moz.com/researchtools/on-page-grader give the bookbub page a slight edge - though neither are far off the mark, with both getting A grades.
The URL on your personal site is a little more natural looking whereas the bookbub URL is perhaps a little too sterile (and looks a lot like you're trying a little too hard, perhaps? (However, that's my own take on it, rather than a direct violation of one of Google 200+ commandments)
With regard to your 804 error, this is going to be due to Moz and SSL/SNI not getting along, so it's going to something you're stuck with until Moz resolve this. (I believe they are working on this and have made some progress, but nothing that's ready to go mainstream, yet - You'll see it referenced thought out the forum) : https://moz.com/community/q/high-priority-error-code-804-https-ssl-error-encountered
That should give you something to kick off with for the moment.

Mapping ALL search data for a broad topic
Hi All As our company becomes a bigger and bigger entity I'm trying to figure out how I can create more autonomy. One of the key areas that needs fixing is briefing the writers on articles based on keywords. We're not just trying to go after the low hanging fruit or the big money keywords but actually comprehensively cover every topic and provide actual good quality up to date info (surprisingly rare in a competitive niche) and eventually cover pretty much every topic there is. We generally work on a 3 tier system on a folder level, topics and then sub-topics. The challenge is getting an agency to: a) be able to pull all of the data without being knowledgeable in our specific industry. We're specialists and, thus, target people that need specialist expertise as well as more mainstream stuff (the stuff that run of the mill people wouldn't know about). b) know where it all fits topically as we kind of organise the content on a heirarchy basis. And we generally cover multiple smaller topics within articles. Am I asking for the impossible here? It's the one area of the business I feel the most nervous about creating autonomy with. Can we become be as extensive and comprehensive as a wiki-type website without having somebody within the business that knows it providing the keyword research. I did a searh for all data using the main two seed keywords for this subject on ahrefs and it came up with 168000 lines of spreadsheet data. Obviously this went way beyond the maximum I was allowed to export. Interested in feedback and, if any agencies are up for the challenge, do let me know! I've been using moz pro for a long time but have never posted and apologise if what I'm describing is being explained badly here. Requirements Keywords to cover all (broad niche) related queries in the UK, no relevant uk (broad niche) keywords will be missed Organised in a way that can be interpreted as article brief and folder structure instructions. Questions How would you ensure you cover every single keyword? Assuming no specialist X knowledge, how will you be able to map content and know which search queries belong in which topics and in what order. Also (where there is keyword leakage from other regions) how will you know which are UK terms and which aren’t? With minimal X knowledge – how will you know whether you’ve missed an opportunity or not (what you don’t know you don’t know) What specific resources will you require from us in order for this to work? What format will the data be provided to us in - how will you present the finished work so that it can be turned into article briefs?

Website Snippet Update in Search Console?
I have a company that I started working with that has an outdated and inaccurate snippet coming up. See the link below. They changed their name from DK on Pittsburgh Sports to just DK Pittsburgh Sports several years ago, but the snippet is still putting the old info, including outdated and incorrect description. I'm not seeing that title or description anywhere on the site or a schema plugin. How can we get it updated? I have updated titles, etc. for the home page, and done a Fetch to get re-indexed. Does Snippet have a different type of refresh that I can submit or edit? Thanks in advance https://g.co/kgs/qZAnAC

Links to my site still showing in Webmaster Tools from a non-existent site
We owned 2 sites, with the pages on Site A all linking over to similar pages on Site B. We wanted to remove the links from Site A to Site B, so we redirected all the links on Site A to the homepage on Site A, and took Site A down completely. Unfortunately we are still seeing the links from Site A coming through on Google Webmaster Tools for Site B. Does anybody know what else we can do to remove these links?

Client WIll Not Rank for Targeted KW Terms
Good Morning Mozzers, I am at a total loss. I have been working with a client in a "difficult" (to say the very least) vertical for roughly the past two years and for the life of me, cannot get these clients to rank within the top 3 for the targeted keyword terms. It seems that every time our targeted keyword begin to gain a little bit of traction and improve their ranking position, it is immediately followed by the same keywords plummeting shortly thereafter. I have done everything (in my mind) I can to try and get this client's keyword terms to rank, everything from revising the on-/off-page content, building citations, submitting the site to services like Yext, advertising on AdWords and Yelp, etc. but it doesn't seem to make any significant difference. I'm hoping that someone can offer some guidance into how I can get these clients to start ranking highly for the targeted keyword terms because I'm at a complete loss. I look forward to all of your responses! Thank you for reading. If you'd like to check out the site, the URL is: www.lawtonmd.com

Only ranking well when "UK" is added to search term
Hi, what does it mean when a lot of our keyword phrases rank only when "UK" is typed in the search term? For example:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Solid_Web
"boxes" (not in top 50)
"boxes UK" (38) "big storage boxes" (45)
"big storage boxes UK" (33) We haven't attempted to SEO the pages for search terms with "UK" appended to them. Our domain is a co.uk domain. So, what reasons could there be that are we ranking in such a way?0 -
What to do when Demoted Sitelinks appear on search results under my main link?
Hello all, I had some links that i didn't want them to appear under search results (under my main domain) . Using websmaster 'sitelinks' i demoted those links and it has been almost a month and i can see those unwanted links on SERPS. Those pages don't even have high traffic, I am not quite sure why even they appear on Google. Is there anything else i can do to remove them under main domain search results. Thanks Seda

My brand is not ranking on Android Google SERPs
In the new blog post here, she links to mobilemoxie, a site which allows you to do searches on various different smartphones. I tried a search for my brand, "ixl.com" on an iPhone 4 and a Android phone, the Motorola Droid X. On the iPhone, our brand appears in #1 like normal, but on the Android phone, our result doesn't appear on the first page. Any ideas as to why this would be the case? We're currently developing a mobile version of our site but we don't have one yet. Could that be the issue?
