To delete or not? That is the question..

In the case of an eCommerce store with a large catalogue of branded goods the inventory is constantly being adjusted as products become discontinued. Each year most fashion brands have 2 or 3 launches. At this same time they will delete some (not all) of previous years collections. Once we have sold through the remaining inventory of last season's products the question is how to proceed?
a) delete products to avoid customers landing on page, then only to be disappointed when product is no longer available to purchase..
b) keep products however mark as discontinued / no longer available and show a link to a similar product if applicable..
I am coming around to the opinion that b) provides a better user experience. However will this growing catalogue of old products (pushed to bottom of category page) help keep content of site full and have SEO advantages? If this is the case then that helps confirm b) as best choice??

Ha! Yes, I noticed the Google goggle thing.
I get that each is a separate SKU and landing page. I'm suggesting why compete with yourself? Use canonical tags to tell Google (for ranking purposes) you want to consolidate all the SEO equity (and content) from all three pages into the category page (making it richer and stronger). Theoretically, if someone searches for "SkiEyes ExEyes goggles in red", Google will render the red landing page. If the same searcher searches for "SkiEyes ExEyes goggles", the category page will display.

Donna, Thanks for your reply. In this case each of these goggles in each colour is a separate sku and landing page. (Also apologies to use google and goggle in same sentence

Maybe I'm misinterpreting your example or intent, but in my mind, the ideal situation would be where Google ranks the category page that lists and links to all the different color options. The specific black, red, and blue goggle pages would be canonicaled back to the main category page, allowing you to consolidate SEO equity there.

Thanks for responses so far. I have been thinking further on this question and a further question has presented itself;
Consider the example where you sell ski goggles. Company SkiEyes produces a gents goggle called ExEyes in three colours, black, blue and red. It has been a best seller for years with plenty of sales, traffic and links (one for each colour). Now the blue has been discontinued whilst the red will be out of stock for 2 weeks. In the case of a customer making a google search 'SkiEyes ExEyes' the ideal scenario would be that google ranks in stock black colour at top, then out of stock red and further down the discontinued.. Any thoughts on how this could be achieved?

Thanks for link to moz article which is excellent. I like the suggestion of a custom 404 page for certain cases. Also as 404 pages lose link juice they suggest best option is to leave products on site though with suggested alternatives;
One of the more important aspects to my question was regarding SEO, ie will keeping discontinued products be superior to a 404 and the answer is within the article you link to... Also I am coming to the opinion that the best customer experience is to keep the product on site (however at bottom of list of products in their category) with suggestions for alternative choices. This way the customer doesn't hit a dead end and we keep any traffic and/or link juice ..

Thanks for the Matt Cutts video which I had been unaware of. I would consider our site to be more in the medium category. We are unable to predict an expiry date as our products don't have such a date i.e. some will continue for years and others will sell poorly and be discontinued after a few months. Also I am not in complete agreement that a 404 page is no more frustrating than a page which shows the original product albeit with a discontinued note. At least in the latter scenario the customer has an image and details of the original product to work from. Even better if we make suggestions of similar products...

Matt Cutts recommends a strategy based on the size of your product inventory. For large sites (like yours), he recommends configuring an unavailable_after meta tag when the page is created. The tag will effectively provide Google with a page expiry date which will be treated the same as a removal request. The page will be removed from search results about a day after the expiry date.
That solution doesn't help folks who have bookmarked the expired product page or sent there from one of your referral partners. For those, you'll still need to create a custom (redirected-to) page that explains what's happened - the product has been discontinued, is no longer available, and showcase similar products, if applicable. As you said, it will provide a much better user experience.

Hi, I have an International SEO question and would like to get some help from Moz forum: Our company has a Taiwan office for a few years already, but never had any Traditional Chinese (lang code: ZH-TW) webpage publihsed on our site: https://www.abc.com. The regional team recently has built a 50 page ZH-TW microsite based on translations from select pages from abc.com. The site will have it's own navigation. Currently our CMS doesn't have a language directory to support ZH-TW (such as https://www.abc.com/zh-tw) If we do not add a directory, the pages would have to be published as ZH nodes (for Simplified CHINESE) with ZH language tags and canonicals. The only tag we can set for ZH-TW would be the Hreflang tag. Example:

Sitemap Question (aspx, XML, HTML)
Hey everyone! My company uses a tool called SEOQuake. We are trying to hit all of their "checkmarks" when we run a diagnosis for them. One of the only things we can not figure out how to pass is their section for Site Compliance ---> XML Sitemaps. Our client's websites that we have built are all using .aspx URL structures, and when I view them, it clearly states that it is an XML file. It has this text written at the top of the .aspx page: "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below." Does anyone know what is happening here?

To Genesis or not to Genesis that is the question
Hi everyone, i know this subject has been raised few times in the past, but i wanted to reach out to the community and find out what is your take on the advantages and disadvantage (if any) for using the Genesis Framework when building a new websites for Clients. I know for fact that many developers are complaining that they find it harder to manage the Genesis Framework, which i do appreciate has a bit more of comparability issues when it comes to plugins and modifications, but i always looked at it as a positive rather then a negative. My personal opinion is that Genesis framework is more of a stable Skeleton that is better read by Search Engine (from a technical SEO point view) and is harder for hackers to penetrate. Would have love to hear the community experts opinion pros and cons. Cheers. Dan

SSL, SEO, and Site Migration question
When migrating a site to a new url and one where the old url had no https and the new url will be full https does it matter if the 301 redirect points at http://thisisthenewsite.com ? Meaning, should the new site have the ssl / https up prior to redirecting the old site? Does it matter if you redirect the old site to http://thisisthenewsite.com or https://thisisthenewsite.com? Since the site will force to https anyway?

Question re. crawlable textual content
I have a client who is struggling to fit crawlable textual content on their pages. I'm wondering if we can add a "Learn More..." feature that works as a mouse over pop up. When a page visitor runs their curser over the link or button, a window bubble pops up and textual content about the page will show. Not knowing much about code, can text in this format be crawlable by search engines and count as unique and relevant content? Thanks, Dino

Word Press Seo Errors/ Questions
Hi my name is Tina I am new here I hope you guys can help me out. I thought building my new site with Word Press was going to simplify things, however I have a ton of errors, and I am not sure what they are, or how to fix them. I am hoping someone could share with me a solution for these errors. I have 28 rel=canonical errors, I am not sure what this means, I understand it to mean my pages are similar, and this is to set a heirarchy between my pages. Please correct me if I am wrong. If I am correct would this be necessary to add if my main keyword was "widgets" and my home page was optimized for "widgets" and my next page was "blue widgets" and so on. While my pages are similar they are all optimized for different versions of my main keyword some using long tail keywords. Do you know of a plugin that can help solve this problem? Also does anyone have a plugin they recommend for G+ my G+ authorship verification is causing an error as well? I am using Head Space 2 I have used this seo plugin numerous times with great success it has been my favorite seo plugin. However, we have a portfolio that shows our clients websites, and on those pages Head Space will not let me enter a description tag. What plug in do you guys recommend with more control over each page? Another interesting issue is on one of our pages I optimized it for our Canadian clients, and now every page has been listed in Google.ca for the keywords it should have on Google.com. We are listed on Google maps, verified in Google places, and our address is on the site so they know we're from the USA however, the majority of our keywords are only listed in Google.ca. We're on page one for all of them, we are in the top three on most of them so that's not bad, but we want to be listed in Google.com as well. Any suggestions on this?

Question for a developer out there...
I have a random question form someone who is a developer. I"m not sure if this is the right place to post this question, but figured it was worth a shot. I have the Yoast SEO plug in installed, and it this plug in is duplicating some of the functions of my theme and as a result I have some duplicate html and meta data in my source code. From what I can tell it looks like both my theme and and the YOAST plug in are duplicating meta description, canonical url, and maybe a few other things that I can't really understand. I was wondering if anyone knew of what the best way to fix something like this, and if these issues are having any negative effects on my site / SEO? Thanks so much.
