Tracking a Redirect
-
Recently a client of mine had a new site developed and had changed their domain, so the old URL is now redirecting to the new URL.
They want to be able to track referral traffic in the analytics so we can decipher how much direct traffic is coming in from people typing in the old URL. Is this possible and if so, can I have a guide in doing so?
Thanks!

Hi there,
This is a great question, and one that I addressed almost identically to what Anthony recommended in a Moz post I wrote about a year ago: https://moz.com/blog/heres-how-to-keep-301-redirects-from-ruining-your-seo
However, one of the comments on that post suggested a better solution than UTMs that I've been using ever since, which is basically to just invent your own parameters. Here's what my parameters look like now:
/old-page >>> /new-page?redir=301&src=/old-page
The problem with UTMs is that they override the original source/medium information. The new format allows you to retain that attribution data while still being able to use the parameters for isolating this traffic.

You won't really be able to see how much of it is direct. If someone clicks an external link pointing at the old site or types the URL in the address bar, they both would go through the same redirect process.
If you wanted to get some general tracking on people hitting old URLs, you could have your redirects go to the new site with utm parameters on the end of the URL.
Something like: old-domain.com -> new-domain.com?utm_source=old-domain&utm_medium=redirect

Page Name Tracking - Without UTM links
Hello, Our current site is fully html with no cms. We're moving to a newer version today with a typo 3 cms. My one worry is as follows; On some pages an internal link opens a jquery lightbox, inside the lightbox will be a video or download link. I cannot simply add a standard event url like I wanted to (utm_ link) as the pages are linked via the cms pointing to different pages, not the url's. We really need the following appearing in Analytics, whether its an event or landing page; The click of the light-box link The click of the video OR download link inside the lightbox. I would really, really appreciate any help on this as the new website is going live today, regardless whether this has been resolved. Thank you very much in advance of any replies. twY8s8B.jpg

How can I track my rankings on Google Images?
I noticed a small amount of traffic coming from a particular very generic keyword. Being pleasantly surprised that we are ranking for this, and after some digging, I found that we are actually ranking in Google images, rather than in the web results. How can I track whether other keywords are ranking in Google images? I use Rank Checker to track keywords in the main web results, but this doesn't have a function for Google Images. Help please - thanks.

How to better track subdomains in Google Analytics?
Hello Everybody! so I am setting up a website that will have several subdomains, based on the language of the site, for example: site.com; es.site.com; fr.site.com... How should I trace this is GA but having attention that I should be able to see visits as a whole and also if I want I should be able to see visits per subdomain, anything on specific I should do when creating the account? And after creating the account, how to separate that accordingly? 🙂 Thank you all!

What type of links/redirect is Yahoo! using?
So I'm trying to figure out exactly what type redirect or hyperlinking Yahoo! is using on their article pages. For example:
Reporting & Analytics | | William.Lau
https://shopping.yahoo.com/blogs/fashionate/spring-clean-your-beauty-routine--10-tips-on-looking-fresh-this-season-000058218.html Hover over an external link, it shows you the ending URL. Right or left click it, it gives you a 302 redirect. When you actually left click it, it adds and "id" attribute, I assume for tracking. However, when you left click the the hyperlink, it no longer shows as a 302. I have limited working knowledge of web development techniques, so anyone with advance knowledge or have actually done this, it'd be helpful to understand this more.0 -
GA: Want to have a profile tracking only 3 out of 4 subdomains only?
Hi Mozzers, I would like to track 3 out of 4 subdomains in a profile on GA. To 301 Redirect or NOT?
Hi, This site has been so helpful in receiving not only answers to my questions but explanations too. With so many opinions and motives on the internet explanations help one to decide in which way to go. Here is my dilimna, as always, all input is welcome and very appreciated! I have a site that has more links to www.domain.com and less to http://domain.com , however, for our local search and I do not know why - our http://domain.com has better position in search engines and (www.domain.com has way more links) Is there any reason for this? However, in generic term, (no locality mentined) our www.domain.com shows up in the results. My site is hosted on Yahoo webhositng which does not allow for .htaccess 301 redirects, someone on this board was really nice and has alerted me to Godaddy (my domain is hosted there) and introduced me to a DNS 301. I called Godaddy and they said it would be possible, and also told me that I would lose all my email with Yahoo. I have managed to backup the email and am leaning towards the Godaddy- DNS redirect, just wanted to know if I would see a big difference in SEO. Links (different root domains) currently - http://domain.com 55, www.domain.com 1000 plus. Thanks for any input, if amnyone knows.

301 redirect visible on Google.
Hello, This is a strange one for me. We have 301 redirected our .com domain to the .co.uk domain. The strange thing is that if you gogole the .com domain (theloanengine.com) there is a result with the website description. If you click on the result you are redirected tot he website homepage. One other thing: I've discovered this 301 issue because Google Analytics started to show me a few days ago referrals from the .com domain. I don't know if these things are connected. Cornel

Google Analytics Goal Tracking Head Match w/ Query Strings
Hello, I have what should be a simple question here but there is a small nuisance I am trying to make sure I have configured correctly. We have a product based website w/ no e-commerce because they sell through a dealer network. All these product pages have "Where to Buy" links and the URL after you click where to buy always uses the query string ?r=XXX. Example: www.mysite.com/product/category/subcategory/product-name?r=12345 I want to setup a goal in GA with a URL and configure head match on the "?r" but which of the following is exactly how it should be configured with the "Goal URL" ?r= ?r r= Does it matter, because I had it setup as "?r" and it was never registering any goals. Do I need to leave off the "?" and just have it be r= Thanks in advance for the respones.
