I need help - I'm trying to boost the rankings of a competitive category page - Leather Office Chairs
First I'm thinking I need earned links - but for something like leather office chairs thinking of interesting, unique content people would love to read & share is proving difficult.
I am struggling - can anyone help?!

This is actually what I've been working on for the past few weeks, health implications of poor office chairs - stats to back this up in an infographic & a couple of articles to support this. & why you need an ergonomic workspace.
Then as we have a new school chair range, I've done one on back pain in children & the health implications.
Thank you for your other tips! We have a lot of ranges which I find really hard to be creative for - e.g. cupboards.
Most of these blogs also charge to put content on their site & I know Google is against this - what is everyones view on that?
Just need a bit of inspiration!

Run queries in google to see what your competitors are doing. Find articles that help with inspiriation, and then write a better, unique version to help bring additional value to the customer.
An example query I just tried real quick was

I believe that a retail site should have an article library where there are articles about how to select the proper product, how to use it, how to maintain it, how to enjoy it, history about the product, trivia about the product, and many other topics.
The decisions about what type of content should exist in this library are guided by the customer questions that you receive every day. As the library grows it answers more and more customer questions and this reduces your need to respond to questions by email. Many people find the answer in your library and don't need to ask you. Many people don't know about your library and write and you respond with a couple of links to library articles instead of composing a lengthy reply.
Your customer service people are already being asked these questions, they are probably already writing replies or they are answering the questions by phone every day. If you have customer service people who know more about your product than anyone else on the planet then they can be your source for the content that you need. But, if your customer service people don't know anything about the product and can't answer these questions, then you should do something about that so they can do a better job. Then they will become your source for the content that you need
If you are serious about doing a good job in your space, having customer service people who can help the customers, then you will have a program in place to educate them about your products. On the basis of the above, every retail site should have a growing content library.
However, the most powerful site in the retail SERPs is going to be an information site with a small store.

Infographics are always a good place to start, sharing them on social media and e-shots. Blogging is a key way though, we face the same trouble of having to write content for products that don't gain many links however you can always be a little more creative with the blogs. We published an article on our PVC strip curtain range featuring in movies and tv shows and simply published it on social media, unique and fun but also breaks up the salesy blog posts too! Perhaps take a look at health and wellbeing blogs/websites and try to work with them to create a post on comfort in the workplace? (office chairs encouraging good posture and avoiding back pain, etc). Infographics can be created to be small help/info guides like top 10 products in office/spend vs splurge on office equipment etc. I think content/blogs are the best bet to gain links to a product page but it'll take a bit of brainstorming to come up with new and unique ideas - start your thought process with 1) what blogs are published about this product 2) what do my competitors do 3) what do my customers want (key questions asked on google) 4) how can i make this interesting and creative.

Haha very true. You have some great ideas, I definitely need to think outside of the box and spend more time on research - I just feel sometimes when I'm researching I'm not spending time on things like onsite optimisation. Now our team is bigger, I should be able to pass some of this work on.
You'd suggest setting up a new blog to do this though? And not on our own blog? Alternatively, could we get articles like this put on other relevant blogs?

Hi I have a web page which lists about 50-60 products which links out to either a pdf on the product or the main manufacturers website page containing product detail. The site in non e-commerce is this the site/page likely to get hit by Penguin? Would it be best to create a separate page for the product/manufacturer group i.e 5 or 6 pages but linking out to the PDFs etc...?

Is it even possible to have a link building strategy?
I've been learning all about the SEO industry since starting my own website and l am truly baffled as to how to even begin generating inbound links. Does anyone have any tips or ideas? Every article l read swears that by generating good content, other sites are going to link to your own naturally. According to many, the best sites to link to your own are related sites that publish similar content to your own. If you are business however, these sites can only be competitors. Why on earth would a competitor want to link to another competitors website? Even if you launched a email marketing campaign notifying other organisations in your industry about an article you have written regarding the latest market news.......they may click and read it.......but are they honestly going to contact their web designer and tell them they must mention this article on their site!?!?!?!!? I would love to here various thoughts this matter. Have l got it completely wrong?

How to build a linking architecture in the most effective way?
Hi there, I'm creating a new website and I would like to start it in the best possible way. Content is the last of my problems, so is back links and social media. But I would appreciate your advice from an architectural point of view. In my current sites I've been struggling organizing menus, categories and internal links in an SEO friendly way. I just haven't got it yet 🙂 how to create an architecture that is both userfriendly and SEO optimized. Could someone please give me some tips or point me to a recent article to build a SEO optimized website architecture? How many menus in a page?

PDF for link building - avoiding duplicate content
Hello, We've got an article that we're turning into a PDF. Both the article and the PDF will be on our site. This PDF is a good, thorough piece of content on how to choose a product. We're going to strip out all of the links to our in the article and create this PDF so that it will be good for people to reference and even print. Then we're going to do link building through outreach since people will find the article and PDF useful. My question is, how do I use rel="canonical" to make sure that the article and PDF aren't duplicate content? Thanks.

What is the optimal link profile?
I am doing a variety of SEO link building techniques. I am doing: guest blog posts article submissions directories bookmarks web2.0 properties link acquisition I don't expect much from the article submissions, web 2.0, and directories, so I am using these methods for the long tail and less competitive keywords. Is this a good idea? When we talk about a link profile, is it per page or for the whole site? Does it matter if you have a more diverse link profile for a single page or does it have to be diverse for the whole site? Appreciate any informed comments!

Sitewide blog link and Article links
Hi Guys I just wanted to give you all a heads up on something I adjusted recently that worked really well and wanted to ask for your own experiences on this. 1. We have a blog that adds regular content and within the blog we link from the keyword we are targeting. Standard stuff right ! We were struggling for movement on a keyword so I removed the links from the articles and added a link on the site wide blogroll. The link on the blogroll included the keyword but was a longer descriptive link. Low and behold we got a first page listing when the changed it.The change in ranking was made a few days later. I have always been given the impression that site wide isn't that great ? So explain this one . Of course there are many other factors etc 🙂 What are your experiences and thoughts on what happened here ?

Too many links!
Hi, I'm running a wordpress blog (modhop.com) and am getting the "too many links" on almost all of my pages. It appears that in addition to basic site navigation I have plug-ins that create invisible links that are counted in the crawl...at least that's my guess. Is there a good way to control this in wordpress? A nofollow in the .htaccess? A plug-in that does this? (I'm sort of at novice-plus level here so the simplest solution is ideal.) Thanks!
