Internal linking
-
Hi,
I currently have built my website with internal links to boost my category pages (the ones that are the most important with the most traffic). Is the way to go or nowadays or doesn't it matter what pages you boost. I beleive what I did is some sort of "page rank sculpting" but is it still useful ? or I should I link natural across my website even though some pages will get a boost and some won't ?
The link that I have are at the bottom of my content (not in the footer) but at the bottom of the page next to each other ? does they count or is it really bad to have them that way ?
I have a blog and I was wondering if when I link from my blog page for example about "Barolo" to my page about "Piedmont" if I should also link from my page about "Piedmont" to my Barolo page or if the link only has to go one way from my blog / Barolo page to my piedmont page to boost Piedmont.
Thank you,
-
That is what I did so I guess I am good. Now, I just need to create nice blog pages that satisfy the user and link to the correct pages so that the content between the 2 pages I link benefits the pages.
Thank you,
-
Hi there,
Thanks for your question.
You are right in trying to make sure that your most important pages are linked to internally as much as possible. It's a signal to Google that the page is important plus your internal PageRank will be able to flow to key pages and give them a chance to rank. This kind of technique has been described as PageRank sculpting in the past, but it's not too helpful to think of it like that because none of us know what the PageRank of a given page is. Instead, look at what pages a user would want to find easily and the ones that are important to your business, then make these prominent in your navigation.
Cross-linking from blog posts or other pages of content can also be beneficial, but isn't particularly scalable. So by all means do it where it makes sense, but I wouldn't rely on this as the sole way to link internally to important pages.
I hope that helps!

Thank you for your reply Igor,
From what I understand you are saying that it isn't worth my time creating blog pages to link internally to the pages that I want to boost. It seems that an external link is better or that breadcrumbs will do the job, correct ?
How about one pages that are hard to rank on because of high demand won't maybe 10 or 15 internal link via my blog help ?
Or is is better to have a few very good contextual links across my site ?

All other things being equal if you link from Barolo to Piedmont it will give a very little boost to Piedmont article. But that's almost never the case, one external backlink can make all the difference here.
In general, it does make sense to keep your internal links distribution in check. Usually, you want to link more to upper-level pages (categories), if you have breadcrumbs on your website, that should take care of it.
You can calculate Internal PageRank for all your pages and see if there are pages or categories which have too little or too many internal links compared to the rest of the pages on your website or pages in the same category.

Inbound link is follow link but we put no follow link back - is it beneficial for rankings?
Dear Moz Community, We are operating in a niche market, where there are not so many content marketing options. What we are left with are link exchanging with relevant sites that are on the same topic but to not directly compete with us. Now we know that if we link back to site A and site a links back to us - for google this is not a very good link. But, some of the sites we are exchanging links with, do not know the term follow vs no follow links. My question - if your link is to site A is a no follow link but they give us a follow link - does it mean thats a better option than a follow vs follow. Thanks for help!

Are links from charities really better than 'normal' links.
Hi Guys. Just wondering about this idea that links from Charities are particularly good. I've heard people say that links from .org sites are particularly strong. But anyone can get a .org domain, it's just that charities tend to use them more often. Right? I just don't get the logic. Can anyone give more detail about this? Is it a myth? Is there quality info on this topic I can check out? We're working with several charities at the moment, and they all seem happy to blog and link to us...so I just wanted to know a little more. Isaac.

Should I ask sites that link to me to update links that redirect?
I have found some links to my site that go through a single 301 redirect to get to my site. Should I contact these websites to ask them to update the link, or is that not worth the time?

When buying used domains, how do i see the links pointing to that domain? OSE not showing links
when buying used domains, how do i see the links pointing to that domain? Sometimes the open site explorer doesn't show any links to the domain, especially if the domain is parked. Obviously a domain for sale with 1000 domains linking to it has lots of SEO Value right? Thanks mozzers!

Using sitewide links to improve link profile?
Hi Guys... When I look at my competitor's link profile, they often have thousands of backlinks. For example, one of our main competitor, he got 3,400 backlinks in total but only 80 referring domains. When I look at my link profile, I have around 50-60 referring domains, but hardly 80 backlinks. My question is, is it okay to get a few sitewide links (no-follow of course!) to get to the thousands backlinks? Or I will be able to achieve top rankings with my current link profile? Thanks!!

Should I remove links from my internal blog?
I have blogs/news sites on every one of my clients' websites (each representing a different business within the same industry - self storage). On each of these blog sites, I have a writer who places about 3-5 exact keyword match links (varying anchor text) to give interlink juice to the other off-site businesses owned by the client. Each of these blogs receive about five posts per week. I am sure this is mega-over-optimizing and a stupid thing to do considering penguin. So, my questions are: Moving forward - 1. Should i stop adding so many blog articles to each site? 2. How many interlinking anchor texts should I use per blog? 3. Should I go back and either get rid of all those interlinks on past blogs or just trash the blog articles altogether? Please help if you can - I very much appreciate the responses best bd

Link Spamming or Not? Block Internal Search Results From Indexing?
We are looking at providing our customers with the best experience when performing a site search for a product. Would it be bad SEO practice to have our internal search results show results for all 4 Brands linking to different domains? This would mean multiple outgoing links to other owned sites from the same IP. Is it a best practice to block internal search results using robots.txt?
