Creating your own blog for back linking to your site
-
Our competitor seems to be linked to a blog that they have created themselves. From an SEO perspective is it worthwhile creating a blog that is related to your particular industry and then only including links back to your site. Also is there any way to upload ,articles etc automatically to the blog to cut down on the people hours involved in updating content?

Hi,
Depending on the nature of the blog and size of your site, I would consider creating the blog as a folder within your site. Having a blog that refers to your business quite a bit is best found under your domain as it provides a great deal of long tail keywords, will provide a lot of internal linking which done right improves usability and most importantly it gives your site breadth and depth, giving it an air of authority.
As for mass uploads and reduced man hours. Firstly, in my mind the only blogging platform that excels at optimised layout is wordpress.
Although you can copy paste content from editors (like word), I would highly recommend you give the relevant parties their own author logins, teach them all the editing options and style requirements and have them draft everything in wordpress. For added consistency, have an editor (a nominated person) look over it to ensure each article has the same look and feel before publishing. If it is simply pre written documents, I would suggest copy/pasting them into a plain text editor eg. Notepad and copy/paying them to wordpress. This will remove the formatting. To save on the man hours, employ someone of oDesk to do the grunt work.
Articles uploaded from Word and other word processing applications often paste poorly as they have a number of hidden tags that leave a mess of styles.

Are high quality press release syndication site links valuable?
Suppose your press release got picked up by high authority sites like Yahoo, Morningstar, PaidContent.org, etc. But they republished the press release and kept the links. Do these links pass any value since the sites are just republishing the press release?

Links from other sites in our network
I work for a large publisher with many websites, and it's common for our biggest sites to link to smaller sites within the network. These links are follow, site-wide, anchor text-optimised footer links. I think it's obvious that these links are harmful to the smaller sites that are being linked to, but it's hard to convince others of that, particularly because the toolbar PR benefit is very obvious. Do you think it would be better to: a) Remove the links completely b) Keep the links, but make them nofollow c) Keep the links (as it's not harmful) Thanks

Should you always link back?
I am asking this for two reasons: Courtesy: Is it common courtesy to reciprocate with a link back if somebody has linked to your site? SEO: Does linking back affect your rankings at all? A blog has linked to one of my clients' sites as part of a round-up of "top 100 best" within their industry. They have also sent us an email suggesting that we add a link from our site saying that we've been listed. Of course, I understand that it is in my clients' interest for us to advertise on their site that they've been listed in a Top 100 list... However, it got me thinking (as more of a general question) - does reciprocating a link ever affect it's value at all? ie. Is two-way linking ever considered part of a link exchange in the eyes of Google, and does it penalize you at all for that?

Back Links
Hi there, I have been guest posting on blogs trying to build some back-links into my website, which so far is going not too bad, however I was wondering when writing these guest posts should I limit my post to let's say 2 back-links per guest post? If 2 back-links are going to different pages on my website, does the first back-links in the guest post have more value than the 2nd back-link? Kind Regards,

Back-link Quantity
Hi there, I am writing a post for a well respected blog in our industry. I'm debating on either to target 1 key-phrase in this post with an external back-link, or to go target 2-3 back-links in the post. Just a few questions on this: Would including 1 external back link be more beneficial than having 2 or 3 external back-links in the post? Kind Regards
