Moving from a .com to .co.uk
-
I need to migrate a wordpress site from domainname.com to domainname.co.uk.
If I just put a 301 on every page on the .com will that cover it?
Would it make sense to go and change all the backlinks/profile links to the new .co.uk site or doesn't it matter if you have a 301 redirect on it?
Thanks

Hi Joanne,
We did the same thing recently for a client who wanted to move from a .com to a .co.uk. She had a well-established website. Our methodology:
- Create exactly the same URL structure and architecture.
- Copy the exact same content over to each URL
- Notify all websites linking to any pages to update (We actually did this part well in advance).
- Notified Google via its webmaster tools that we are migrating to a new website. You can use their new site section to notify them.
- 301 redirected every page of the old site to its new equivalent page.
The sit back and wait, we found the changeover within the SERPS fairly fast – there were a few hiccups while waiting for Google to fully update, however it worked and all PageRank now on site and older positions are almost all regained.
Hope that helps.

Hi Joanne,
When taking such a decision I always read through again and again the article from Google: https://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=83105
Ideally it would be good to contact each webmaster and ask them to change the url from the .com to the .co.uk, but realistic that is almost impossible.
What I would do is download through OpenSiteExplorer all the incoming links, check in general which are the most important for me and at least contact those webmasters and tell them about the change of address.
I hope it helps.

Using both .co.uk and .com
Hello a client has launched a website with both the .com and .co.uk The content is identical. I understand that you should add rel="alternate" hreflang="x" to the code. However, will there be a problem with the identical content? It would be hard to localise the content to one country. I understand why the client has got both domains, particularly the UK one but the actual content is not specific to one country. It is written for English speaking customers really. Also what about links? In this case do you need to build two sets of links to make them both rank? Thanks for any help.

Do Com Junct links affect your site with Google and Penguin
We received the dreaded letter from google in reference to "unnatural or artificial links" Our site has affiliate programs through Commission Junction and Link Share and between the two programs we have over 8000 affiliates or advertisers. Our site has been very successful, but our organic search traffic is down as our rankings in the search engines have dropped. My question is do the affiliate links have an effect on our site with Panda or Penguin?

How to redirect home.co.uk to home.co.uk/
Hi, We recently moved to shopify and noticed that our home page is now .co.uk/ (with backslash) instead of .co.uk As both are returning 200 ok I am concerned that this could cause a duplicate content issue. Could anyone please advice on the best way to fix this? Thanks, Paul

Will same language different region (US/UK) geotargeting via subdirectory (& GWT) cause dupe content or other issues ?
If a UK hosted site on a .com, needs to target US now too but for keywords that are spelt differently in US is creating duplicate version of uk hosted .com site and putting it on a subdirectory .com/us/ and geotargeting via webmaster tools (to usa) ok ? I take it in this scenario no dupe content issues (or other issues) so long as is geotargeted via GWT ? Or are there ? Comments from anyone with experience doing similar (same language, different region geo-targeting dupe content with kw spelling being only difference, via a subdirectory or other route) much appreciated ? Many Thanks 🙂

Optimising a dot com domain for international datacentres

Are there any tips about useful practices to carry out on the site to highlights it's relevance for Australian users?
