No-return tag error
-
Am receiving a no-return tag error on Search Console for pages in our site that are unrelated.
Originating Page: https://www.eginnovations.com/in-the-news/performance-assurance-a-key-to-virtual-desktop-success
Alternate URL: https://www.eginnovations.com/fr/
There is a link to the /fr/ page in the language version at the top of the page but I can't figure out why this would be throwing an error from the originating page. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Natalie,
As SEO Elevated said, the issue is most probably caused by the hreflang tag being within the canonical...
Canonical should point to itself for each language version so to speak, have nothing to do with rel alternate or hreflang.
Baisc example for language versions, required in both English and French Headers:
<ink rel="alternate" hreflang="fr" href="yoursite.com fr="" "=""></ink rel="alternate" hreflang="fr" href="yoursite.com>
Hope I've understood correctly, I looked at the homepage but feel free to share
Good luck!
Nick

There's quite a few of these "hreflang" validator type tools which can be useful in troubleshooting

Right, that's what I'm suggesting to change. Although I am not 100% sure. But I would try removing the hreflang which is inside the canonical, like you have copy and pasted above. Just keep the canonical normal. There's also a slight inconsistency between your use of EN and EN-US, but if you remove the hreflang from the canonical tags, that will take care of that too. Again, I'm not 100% sure, but that's what I'd try next anyway.

Actually, the problem we're having is on the pages for which we do not have alternate versions. We're getting errors on those pages and it makes no sense to me. We have the canonical in place as such:
| https://www.eginnovations.com/in-the-news/performance-assurance-a-key-to-virtual-desktop-success" hreflang="en"/> |
| |and no other hreflang in place as we do not have international versions of these pages. That's what's baffling.

I have not personally seen the use of hreflang inside of the canonical link annotation, as you've done it on the English pages outside of your homepage. I see this on one of those pages:
rel="canonical" href="https://www.eginnovations.com/cloud-monitoring" hreflang="en"/>
That might be the culprit. I don't know for sure that this is wrong, or hurting anything, But it's not something I have ever used (embedding the hreflang inside the canonical tag). You might try removing that fragment. HREFLANG is only on a page-to-page (not site-to-site) level, so I would only include it on pages which have an alternate page available.
-
So we only have alternate languages for our homepage. We have hreflang on our homepage as well as the international pages, but not on any other page. Here's a screenshot from our homepage with the hreflang. Do you see an error? Thanks!

The alternate links with hreflang tags should be present on all the alternate pages. In the example you gave above, there is a self-referencing tag on the English page, and there are a bunch of alternate tags on the French page. But the English page is missing the alternate links to point to the French (and other) alternate pages for those various languages.
To simplify, if you only had English and French pages, then the English page should include a self-referencing tag for English, and an alternate tag for French. And the French page would include a self-referencing tag for French, and an alternate link for English. You might also include an "x-default" on the English page, if it's intended as the primary version for any unspecified other users.

What heading tag to use on sidebars and footers
Hello, I have some awareness of how to use H1, H2 and H3.
On-Page Optimization | | kowston
H1 only once per page as the main page heading.
H2's should be subheadings, H3's are sub-sub headings of the and so on.
This structure gives hierarchy and opportunities to use additional keywords in an order of priority. I can clearly understand how this would work in an article but what about other content on the page such as global/frequently repeated elements like sidebars and footers? I see sites - and in particular, I have examed SEO focused sites - that use H3, H4 and H5 in these instances seemingly giving themselves scope to use at least H2 tags as part of the page content and break out of the structure hierarchy when dealing with sidebars and footers. I suppose this could signal theses headings are sections of the page that are less relevant than the main article content but that is just an assumption. I don't know what is correct.0 -

Rel canonical tag question
Im trying to to fix my duplicate content problem with my catagory pages in my shopping cart. I have read about adding a rel canonical tag to the page so it links back to the main catagory page. So if I add a rel canonical tag to the main catagory page it will show up on every other page for that catagory like page 1 page 2 and so on and it will have the tag linking back to the main cat. That should fix it it right? Now that being said I cant seem to add the tag invetween the head tags. I can add it to the body where I can add content. Will the rel canonical tag work outside the head tags? Any other ideas on this fix? I contacted my people that host the cart to see if they have any features to help this will see what they say.

Why do I suddenly have so many more page errors?
I've been working diligently to remove page errors that appear after each scan of my website. I was down to 3 or 4 errors after the last crawl, now this week I'm getting 80 plus. I haven't changed anything since last week (page titles, etc.) so what's up?

Are a lot auf tag-sites in the index a bad signal for low quality? (Panda Update)
Hello everybody, first of all please excuse my bad english. I'm from Germany - I try my best. 😉 The case: I have a Wordpress SEO project which rankings very well. A this moment I have all "archive sites" like "archive", "category" und "tags" indexed. I use the more-Tag for every archive/category/tag site - so duplicate content ist not really a problem, but in view of the Panda Update, which surely arrives in Germany soon, I wonder if all this Tag/Archive/Category Sites in the index maybe seen as low quality und can hurt the ranking of my whole site. Low quality because: With using the more-tag the site are just a list of internal links with content snippets. I have 500 articles und 700 Tag Site (all in the index). So my fear is when google (with Panda Update) looks at my site und sees all this (maybe) low quality tag-sites in the index I get penalised because there is not a good proportion between my normal (good quality) Articles und the archive/tag sites. I hope you guys can understand my thoughts. Do I have a legitimate fear that the mass of tag-site in the index could be problem? Are there any data from the USA, how blogs mit Tag-Site in the Index rank after the Panda Update or if sites which contains of internal Links mit content snippets - like these tag site - are low quality in Google eyes? Or I'm worring to much? Thank you very much! Oliver
