Anyone Care to Share Some SEO Tricks for Competitive Industries?
-
[Insert word "hack" if you prefer that, but it's so overused that I'm using "trick" instead]
I've been doing SEO for ten years, and I'm pretty good at covering my bases. For the client I'm seeking help with, here's what we're doing: strong and regular onsite keyword optimized content (both long tail and competitive keyphrases), good local SEO, high-quality guest posting on relevant local news sites and blogs, heavy community involvement and support, scholarships and sponsorships, lots of videos, all the social media, tons of competitive research and link building, ongoing website architecture analysis and tweaking, a systematized process for getting reviews, onsite chat, Google Search Ads, etc.
This client has been around for years in a very competitive industry in a medium-sized American city. We do alright in the local pack for certain search terms, but overall his rankings are not good.
For anyone who works in a super competitive industry, do you have any tricks you'd be willing to share? I don't want to steal your secrets, but I could use some advice. Thank you!

Have you done a side-by-side comparison of your client and his top competitors? Things I'd be looking for:
- Are his top competitors specialists in the topics you want to rank for whereas your client is more of a generalist?
- What is your client's online reputation relative to the competition? Is the sentiment positive, neutral, or negative?
- How does their anchor text compare? Are the topics you want to rank for included in the link text?
- Do competitors have keywords in their domain name? I know that's not a ranking factor, but it often translates into incoming anchor text with those topics / keywords which IS a ranking factor.
- Is the content on your client's site organized around the key topics he wants to be known for?
- Is your client listed as its author?
So, no tricks or hacks. Just a few things I look for when in this situation.

Hi Natalie
We chase featured snippets for customers, not rankings, ie position 0 delivers a huge ROI for the right customer query. It is great branding exposure as well if it a zero-click snippet. Featured snippets are not a huge amount of work, more training and guidance. We start with the below and work from there.
- Content on page has to be perfectly optimised for mobile.
- HTTPS
- Use lots of headers (H2 and H3) tags
- Short answer to the question/s - 40-45 words - ideal 42.
- Link out to Authority Sources.
On schema again, not huge on time but high on impact.
Go get em.

Thank you both. We have pretty great content and many high quality contextual earned links already. And we're always working on expanding this. This is stuff that I know from all the years in SEO. We don't have a lot rich snippets, and while I know they help search engines, they're assumed not to actually help rankings, right? In my experience they've done very little to actually boost rankings (or CTR), but if you've seen some huge impact from them, we can see if a complete schema markup is viable. I'm hesitant to direct a ton of time and resources toward busy tasks that don't have much results.

Onpage optimization can get you rankings when competition is low, especially in local SERPs in sleepy little towns.
When things get competitive, then onpage optimization has much less of an impact. Then, great content and great links are much more important.

You cannot beat high quality contextual earned links.
That said schema makes search easier for search engines, so review the schema mark-up and help feed structured data to google in the best way possible. So start with a schema audit.
Hope that helps.

What to do with dynamically translated content sharing same urls?
We've just added to an originally English website, Italian and German translations. User can switch between them with right hand drop down language selection menu; then the entire page will be translated (including menu, body, footer) but the urls remain the same. The Italian page have some meta data (titles and descriptions) translated as well. Is it going to be a significantly negative effect on SEO to have the translated pages sharing the same urls?

URL Parameters, Forms & SEO
Hi I have some pages on the site which have a quote form, in my site crawl I see these showing as duplicate content - my webmaster says this isn't the case, but I'm not sure. Landing page - https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/high-esd-chairs Page with form - https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/high-esd-chairs?quote-form - this also somehow has a canonical on it pointing to https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/high-esd-chairs?quote-form Which neither of us have added. I'm thinking we need to get the canonical needs to be updated to https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/high-esd-chairs Is it worth doing this for all these pages or am I worrying about nothing? Becky

SEO Benefit to SSL Certificate
Our site does not have an SSL certificate. I have read that in the process of adding one of URLs need to be redirected and that some link equity can be lost. Implementing an SSL certificate sounds somewhat complicated and far from risk free. Is there a tangible SEO benefit to upgrading to SSL? Will doing so help SEO in a tangible manner that justifies the cost, time and aggravation? Thanks, Alan

The use of subdomains to improve SEO?
A clients website which provide a number of trade services which have a page for each service they provide for example: carpentry or electrician or plumbing etc. currently these pages are found at domain.co.uk/bathrooms/ bathrooms.html I am trying to optmise each page better as they are competing with other sites who for example sell bathrooms rather than bathroom installers or plumbers. As part of the on page optimisation I plan to change the page names and directory structure. I had an idea to split the website down into subdomains for various sections i.e for all their services Create a sub domain such as http://plumber.domain.co.uk 2.) upload the relevant content (in this example the plumbing page) to the sub domain location 3.) correct all the links to absolute URLs for each sub domain / Will this help target better use of keywords in the URL in terms of SEO efforts ? hope it makes sense thanks Darren

Migrating online store to subdomain using shopify and effects on seo and energy down the road for seo
I'm looking for some clarity... Looking at using Shopify for an existing online store that we have to migrate. Setting up the store with shopify means we will be using a subdomain such as shop.mywebsite.com instead of mywebsite.com/shop. The following are points to consider when responding The client currently has an online store, however it's a proprietary shopping store and CMS that has since gone defunct and they need to migrate to an alternative in order to survive online against new CMS systems that allow the site and its content to be better optimized. There is a lot of existing SEO done on the current site that we don't want to loose PR on. There is roughly 2000 products Client has a fixed budget, dealing with checkout issues, custom work and various other "bugs" seems to be easier controlled with Shopify...thus budget can be used more on content/strategy and migration We want to run the main site in Wordpress and are wanting to use Shopify since it supports a gateway, has great features and seems like it would allow us to get more bang for the buck and can focus more on the main site and content strategy and drive traffic to the subdomain store if needed Or main concern is the effort of migrating 2000+ products to shopify and the traffic and PR it gives the current site will have a negative effect on the main domain itself. Should we really be considering this path? The domain is diveidc.com One main benefit to the subdomain is the ability to clearly segment products from the service portion of the site in the analytics and focus 2 clear strategies and track it in a very defined manner. We're really on the fence with this...any thoughts are welcome.

What are the bing only SEO tactics?
Recently we realised that our client's SERPs were almost always lower on Bing.com and Bing (canada) when comparing with Google.com and Google.ca We want to know if there's different ranking or blocking factors for Bing and if someone had similar expriences. It would also be appreciated if you have releavent and trusted information on this topic, from blog posts, forums, etc. What are your thoughts on this?
