Can A Blog post impact negatively on Google rankings?
-
We used to rank fairly highly on Google for our preferred search term, but once we introduced a blog (or rather the blog excerps) onto our home page we dropped from page 1 to page 3 for our preferred search term.
We have made the assumption this may be down to diluting of keywords and therefor the key phrase or message to the Search Engines was not as clear as it was before.
Is this generally accepted as being the case ? If so - should each and every blog post excerpt start with the key seo search phrase to maintain the integrity of that search phrase ? or perhaps even better still is it best to have the blog on a dedicated page only with no excerpts on the home page ?
We are using Wordpress and also using multiple categories within the blog - is it perhaps best to just have all blog postings on the one page and use TAGS more often?
Thanksing you in advance.

Thanks for the suggestion Garry - I will come back on after our new website has launched and get everyones feedback and SEO advice.
In the meantime we are working on our keyword strategy prior to writing the new content.
I'm liking this forum on SEOMOZ - I like the openness of it.
I suppose what I want to get to is fact as opposed to opinion. There seems to be a lot of opinion out there. Sometimes conflicting.
But it is definately better hearing "opinion" so we can form an "opinion" ourselves, or put theories to the test.
Thanks everyone - its all appreciated.

Tait thanks for your comments and feedback - it is very welcome. We will be posting our new website very soon so we are effectively starting from scratch and have decided to leave teh blog on a blog page of teh site as oposed to includeing excerps on the home page.
It will be interestingto see (after a period) how we rank minus the blog. I will take on board some of your comments re Tags and Categories etc.
Thanks again

It might be worth posting a link to your blog and we can take a look through the code and setup. It may be this introduction but it could of course just be a coincidence.

It's tough to say what happened without knowing exactly what the page looked like before and after the change but I'd be asking myself the following questions:
1. How much did the text on my homepage change? How many words did I used to have on the page? How many words to I have now. Has the keyword density changed? Has the number of links gone up drastically.
2. Have my competitors received new links or changed their pages? This sounds less likely given the fact that you apparently dropped about 20 slots.
Can you simply link to your blog, remove the post excerpts and see if you move back up the SERPs? That would give you a pretty accurate idea if the blog is an issue.
I personally would not start each blog post with the same seo keywords. That may or may not seem fishy to Google but will certainly seem fishy to your blogs readers. I'd focus on writing legitimate content and trying to get links to it.
There's been some of discussion on these forums recently about WordPress tags. The general consensus seems to be stick to Categories and avoid Tags unless you can figure out how to SEO tag pages and how to avoid duplicate content issues with post and category pages. I personally don't think that Tags help or hurt that much with SEO. I'd use Tags and Categories if you can present them in such a way that your blog readers will find them useful. Otherwise avoid them.

Does anyone know of a tool where you can get all of the keyword that any given landing page is ranking for?
I'd like to find out what landing pages are ranking for which keywords, but I haven't been able to find a tool that does it. I was hoping there would be something where I could submit the url and get a list of every keyword it is ranking for. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

My website ranking recently dropping - why?
Hi all, I am a photographer and do my own website and links etc. Website is: http://www.mckayphotography.com.au I have enjoyed good google rankings for my main keyword 'wedding photography sydney' for many years, and even recovered after taking a hit from the penguin (may 2012) update. But the last month has seen a steady drop from around 2nd - 4th down to now 10th. I have analyzed my site using all the moz tools and on most counts eg moz rank and moz trust I am ahead of my competitor sites....but still rank under them on google. So I would greatly appreciate on advice people could give on getting my ranking back up again! Thanks in advance Darryn

Google Webmaster Tools - Inappropriate Keywords
In December our website was the victim of a devastating pharma hack. Google Webmaster Tools never reported malware on our website, but our keywords within Webmaster Tools were all changed to keywords related to mens and ladies watches. Our Google organic search rank and resulting traffic has been dramatically impacted. Since realizing we were hacked, we rebuilt our website from the ground up with a clean and updated installation of Joomla CMS (from 1.5 to 2.5) and changed to a more secure server. As of December 21st, 2012, our website has been clean of the phama hack. We wrote Google and told them what happened. They replied with a "no manual spam actions were found" message. Unfortunately, Google Webmaster Tools still reflects all of the hacked keywords for mens and ladies watches. We are watching our Google Webmaster Tools everyday waiting for Google to remove the hacked keywords. It's been a little over a month and still only about 5 of the first 100 keywords have anything to do with our website. What do you recommend we do to expedite the removal of these inappropriate keywords in Google WMT?

Ranking improvement for states and cities
I am trying to improve rankings for a national website going after keywords product + state/city. It is a very competitive space and I can't figure out why our competitors are ranking above us (the ever enigmatic Google). Any suggestions for improving ranking for these kind of keywords without going black hat? Thanks!

Page Rank
I had just made a 301 re-direct on one of our product pages which had a PR of 4, now that Google has indexed the new page, it's now got a PR of 0, i'm struggling to understand why this could be, i know that you may see a drop of 1, which has happened in the past, but this drop just does not make sense. Any ideas of why this could be? Kind Regards

Rankings lower than expected
It's an age old question, "why is my site lower in the ranking than theirs" But in this case, I'm really not sure!... and we perform the SEO on both sites in question. The problem site is www.esp-machinery.co.uk We are looking for ranking for phrases such as Used Machine Tools, Grinding Machines, Drilling Machines, Used Lathes etc. We aren't getting it as high as we have already with another customer of ours: www.bwmachinetools.co.uk We perform the SEO on both these sites, yet we've put far more work into the ESP one, and still not getting very far. There are more linking domains to ESP than BW, in truth the BW site has a higher mozrank, but by only a single point. We did not build the ESP site, whereas we built the BW one. There have been some URL problems with the ESP site, but we have hopefully improved things enough working with their original developer to be on the right track now. Any advice most welcome.
