Redirecting 2 established websites to 1 new one.
-
I have 2 websites that I've built up for a few years decent DA. I'm thinking of making one new website and directing the two websites to it. Is Google going to find that suspicious, or will the new site benefit from the DA from both?
-
Note that, in addition to what others have said here, it can often be the case that consolidating two websites in the same industry can result in less traffic than the total the two were receiving previously. This is because it's possible that both were ranking for some of the same queries before the merge, and yet the merge doesn't move the top result up (because the result above is significantly more powerful) and hence the net result for that query is just to remove one result you own from the search result page.
Just a word of caution as you model this impact.

No, there isn't an issue with Google when you consolidate 2 sites into one. There is a slight erosion in link equity via 301, but it's nominal. Just make sure the old/new landing pages are closely related and you will be fine.
I know its nerve-racking, but make sure you do yourpyour work and fix any issues after implementation.
When you go live, I typically type site:nameofsite.com in google and click on the legacy link and make sure the old domain goes to the correct page on new site.

I guess I wasn't clear. I'm not just killing a website. I have two websites with a lot of content on them and years of organic linking. I have a new website I'm building. I would moe that content to the new website and properly re-direct all the pages to the right URL's on the new site.
The question is will Google not like if I re-direct and consolidate two websites, and their content, to a new website? I'd like to get the power of both websites on the new one.

I agree with Joseph. The key to 301's redirects is to redirect to a landing page that is "closely" related. If there is no closely related page, best 404 as the user (as Joseph says) may feel cheated with the 301 and bounce. Also, a blanket 301 to a homepage is rarely a good idea. Yes, Google has no issue w/a 301 that is closely related. Good luck!

My Friend,
The way you need to think of this is as a user. If a user gets this redirect, will they feel it is fair, or will they think you redirected them to not a relevant site?
That should guide you because this is the way Google looks at it as well.
Regards,
Joseph Green

Thanks for the reply. One of them is very targeted to one of the topics of the website. The other is a more broad area that is loosely connected.
My thought is to point the loosely connected one to either the homepage, or blog homepage of the new site. Then point the more relevant one to the main section of that category.
For example, if my site has a "cars" section, I'm thinking of posting a car blog to that car section of the new site. So the 301 would go to newsite.com/cars.
Will Google not like that idea?

Hello Friend,
Are the two websites related to the content of the new site?
If yes, then its perfectly fine to 301 redirect your old website to the new one; that's what redirects are all about.
If it is unrelated, I would not do it.
I wish you all the best with your websites.

Redirecting a Few URLs to a New Domain
We are in the process of buying the blog section of a site. Let's say Site A is buying Site B. We have taken the content from Site B and replicated it on Site A, along with the exact url besides the TLD. We then issued 301 redirects from Site B to Site A and initiated a crawl on those original Site B urls so Google would understand they are now redirecting to Site A. The new urls for Site A, with the same content are now showing up in Google's index if we do a site:SiteA.com search on the big G. Anyone have any experience with this as to how long before Site A urls should replace Site B urls in the search results? I undestand there may be a ranking difference and CTR difference based on domain bias, etc... I'm just asking if everything goes as planned and there isn't a huge issue, does the process take weeks or months?

'?q=:new&sort=new' URL parameters help...
Hey guys, I have these types of URLs being crawled and picked up on by MOZ but they are not visible to my users. The URLs are all 'hidden' from users as they are basically category pages that have no stock, however MOZ is crawling them and I dont understand how they are getting picked up as 'duplicate content'. Anyone have any info on this? http://www.example.ch/de/example/marken/brand/make-up/c/Cat_Perso_Brand_3?q=:new&sort=new Even if I understood the technicality behind it then I could try and fix it if need be. Thanks Guys Kay

Should we 301 redirect old events pages on a website?
We have a client that has an events category section that is filled to the brim with past events webpages. Another issue is that these old events webpages all contain duplicate meta description tags, so we are concerned that Google might be penalizing our client's website for this issue. Our client does not want to create specialized meta description tags for these old events pages. Would it be a good idea to 301 redirect these old events landing pages to the main events category page to pass off link equity & remove the duplicate meta description tag issue? This seems drastic (we even noticed that searchmarketingexpo.com is keeping their old events pages). However it seems like these old events webpages offer little value to our website visitors. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Penguin 2.1\. Bad links removed - do I need to wait for next Penguin upgrade to see recovery?
Hi - I have read conflicting advice about this issue - after taking action and removing bad links following a Penguin 2.1 hit, will the site need to wait for the next Penguin upgrade before the link clean-up has any effect? Or will the cleaning of the links be acknowledged and "rewarded" with a ranking improvement before that (assuming all bad links were cleared out)?

Canonicalized Website
We are new to SEO MOZ, and as we are doing our evaluation, multiple page problems have arisen. Our domain is www.moxicopy.com and www.moxicopy.com/blog. Our blog is wordpress hosted but integrated into our site. As we ran our analytics from MOZ PRO, we got TONS of Duplicate Page Title and Duplicate Page Content warnings, over 90 each. Most seem to come from our blog and our different products (we are an ecommerce website). Would the canonicalization of the pages be the cause? And couuld someone further explain exactly what canonical/canonicalization is>? I am very confused, and have a feeling that this is what has hurt our site so much in the last 2-3 weeks

For a mobile website, is it better to use a 301 vs. a 302 redirect?
We are vetting a vendor for our mobile website and they are recommending using a 302 redirect with rel=canonical vs. a 301 redirect due to 301 caching issues. All the research I've done shows that a 301 is by far the better way to go do to proper indexing, which in turn will enhance our page authority. Thoughts on why a 302 would be a better fit than a 301 on our mobile site?

Entering into a new website franchise model, currently subdomains, client wants scalability. Best approach?
This is my first experience with a franchise model business. It is less than 1 year old and on page SEO is in pitiful shape with hundreds of subdomains already for specific locations. What is the best approach to take here? I've seen a lot of debate regarding subdomains and folders and it seems the folder structure may be the best long term course of action but I'm still a bit unclear on this. What is the best approach to ensure that all SEO addressed on the site has the most impact and moving forward, what is the best method to scaling the SEO for franchisee owners. What is the best practice to help each location be best positioned in search in the future, how much should the corporate franchise site typically provide in terms of SEO services to franchisees, and how does the lead SEO consultant scale those services to franchisees?
