Linkbuilding to http/https
-
Hello,
Last year we changed our domain name from http to https. In the .htaccess we included a 301 redirect from http to https.
Nevertheless, some pages do not let you link to https, so for linkbuilding we sometimes need to use http://www.domain.ext in stead of https://www.domain.ext.
Would this be a problem? I should expect with the 301 redirect that we don't have an issue here, but I would like to be sure.
Although, I can make the site accessible without https too, but I don't think this is a good idea regarding duplicate content, is it?
Thanks.
Tom

No, you can do it, but you'll run into some technical issues. For instance try to run this tool on one of your URLs and you'll see it gets rejected.
If you're only making the site https because of a technicaly easier implementation, then I would suggest putting the time in to set the site up right and force https only when secure pages are needed, and force http when coming off of those secure pages

Checked link: https://site.com
This link does not work.Error message: Invalid protocol (URL must start with http://)

True. Nevertheless, is there a problem to have your whole site run under https, and have links to both http and https as long as the http has a permanent redirect to https?
There is no way Google can index pages on http, as it will always redirect to https.

Why was the decision made to move from http to https, most sites only use https for their secure login pages. I'm guessing it was "easier to implement technically" which is why this was redirected that way.

Thanks for your answer!
We currently have a 301 Permanent Redirect for the entire http domain, so the site is only accessible at https. Is it therefore an option to include an canonical that points to https?

Hi Tom, You definitely have a duplciate content issue, it has always been struggling to optimize an https site, but now with the new feature SE gave you can solve them.
Duplication can be solved using canonicals. Teh canonical tag will help bots to understand which page ranks. I recommend to use the http url which is the frendlier one and the easiest to build links, you can leave the https url for the transactions portions of the website which is where the https is really needed.
Read this article though, it helped me a lot while optimizing such a website

Removing bad/poor quality links from the site
Sometime back my site was penalized due to unnatural artificial and deceptive links. Then we got removed the penalty by uploading file in Disavow Tool. Bad links are decreasing gradually now . What i am concerned to ask is that: 1: For how long i should wait till Google removes all the requested bad links 2:Second, i believe there are still many bad links that I dont want to keep. How to remove them now onward? Should we send Google a reconsideration request for removing the remaining bad links (site has been recovered already and no more under penalty banner) Tanveer

Website/blog list to get quality backlinks?
Hi Everyone says quality backlinks increase ranking of your website. Can you please suggest a list of good websites and blogs from where I can get quality backlinks and how to do that. I have one person at my disposal full time to do manual commenting or any manual tasks for getting backlinks but how should i approach this problem (of getting backlinks). Where do I start. For information, my website provides online services (its an ecommerce site) and also has a blog in subdirectory. refer to www.geekwik.com www.geekwik.com/blog Would like to become top ranker on search for these services (eg 'logo design services', 'website programming', 'content writing', 'hire virtual assistant' etc) Also anyone interested to become our SEO consultant or SEO service provider (of course paid) is most welcome 🙂 Thanks in Advance!

The best way to spend 4 hours/day on offsite SEO?
I have an assistant who is able to do 4 hrs of SEO work for me every day. I don't have much onsite SEO work for him to do, and he's not skilled for social media management, so I'm thinking the best thing to have him do is manual link building. So far I've had him create a spreadsheet of more than 1,000 blogs and directories that relate to the subject matter of our websites, and had him include the domain authority of each and if they use the "nofollow" attribute on their links. Next I will have him start adding comments/submissions that include links back to our sites, starting with the highest DA sties and ones without the "nofollow" attributes. Do you agree this is the best way to have him spend his time? Are there other tasks you would highly recommend? Ryan

What's a really good example of a linkbait-y Category / Subcategory hierarchy?
Rand makes a really great point in this 2009 post about the shape of crawl paths: "#4. Craft navigation / category pages that are worthy of links. If you can make these pages worthy of links and attention, you drive PageRank and crawl priority further down your site's architecture into the content (and signal the engine that ALL your pages are important." Which makes sense, intuitively, because you'd like link juice to flow directly and undiluted to your money pages. "Here's all my Green Widgets, Roger: they're all right here. While you're at it, here's a related blog post—'5 Ridiculously Awesome Things Every Green Widget Buyer Should Know'—and, oh look! Would you like to see my Blue Widgets as well?" In practice, though, the Home » Widgets » Green Widgets doesn't sound all that alluring. Useful, absolutely, for UX, but not for getting links. Anyone have some favorite examples of Category / Subcategory hierarchies that do well as link-bait? Client is a marketing agency dealing in the technical arcana of databases and ad serving, so their money pages won't be as specific as a Green Widget or a Miami Hotel. Their site isn't huge, and the pages will be extensively interlinked, so the emphasis has more to do with link juice / page authority than indexation. But I'm wondering if it could it be smart to replace a generic "Services" category with a KW-rich drop-down menu of "Marketing Solutions" (i.e. 'Increase Customer Retention') and link each landing page to a relevant charcuterie of services, white papers, webinars, case studies, etc., rather than keeping these pages in their respective silos—even as they link horizontally to related services?

Is there a tool available to identify whether you already have a link for a specific blog/website?
Hi there, There are a couple of us in the office that are involved in link building - and sometimes it's difficult to keep track of where everybody is trying to build links. Does anybody know if there is a tool available where users can input both website addresses to check whether you already have a link from the desired website? Thanks in advance for your help.
