Conducting an SEO audit is essential for identifying areas to improve a website's performance and search engine rankings. Here’s a step-by-step guide for doing a thorough SEO audit.
- Understand Your Goals and KPIs
Define the main objectives of the website (e.g., increasing traffic, conversions, leads).
Determine key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of the SEO efforts, like organic traffic, bounce rate, and conversion rate. - Check for Technical SEO Issues
Crawl the Website: Use tools like Screaming Frog, Ahrefs, or SEMrush to crawl the site and identify issues like broken links, duplicate content, or missing metadata.
Mobile-Friendliness: Test the site’s mobile responsiveness using Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test. Ensure it performs well across different devices.
Page Speed: Check site speed using Google PageSpeed Insights. Address issues such as large images, excessive JavaScript, or unoptimized code.
HTTPS: Make sure the site is secure and accessible via HTTPS, which is a ranking factor. - Review On-Page SEO Elements
Meta Tags: Ensure that every page has unique, relevant meta titles and descriptions within character limits. Titles should ideally be 50–60 characters, and descriptions should be around 150–160 characters.
Headings: Check that each page uses structured heading tags (H1, H2, etc.) and includes target keywords naturally.
Content Quality: Ensure content is original, valuable, and well-optimized with primary and secondary keywords. Avoid keyword stuffing and ensure readability.
URL Structure: URLs should be short, descriptive, and contain target keywords. Avoid long or complex URLs.
Internal Linking: Check that the site has a clear internal linking structure, which improves navigation and helps distribute link equity. - Analyze Content and Keyword Optimization
Keyword Mapping: Ensure every page targets unique, relevant keywords and check for keyword cannibalization (where multiple pages target the same keyword).
Content Depth and Relevance: For each main page, analyze if the content provides comprehensive coverage of the topic and meets search intent.
Schema Markup: Use structured data (schema markup) to help search engines understand the content better. Check for schema errors in Google’s Rich Results Test. - Evaluate Off-Page SEO Factors
Backlink Profile: Use tools like Ahrefs or Moz to assess the quality and quantity of backlinks. Check for toxic links and consider disavowing low-quality or spammy ones.
Anchor Text Distribution: Analyze the anchor text of backlinks to ensure diversity and avoid over-optimization.
Competitor Analysis: Examine the backlinks of top competitors to find potential link-building opportunities. - Check User Experience (UX) Signals
Bounce Rate and Dwell Time: High bounce rates can indicate that users aren’t finding what they need. Use Google Analytics to check bounce rate and average session duration.
Core Web Vitals: Use Google Search Console to monitor Core Web Vitals, focusing on loading, interactivity, and visual stability. - Analyze Website Architecture
Crawl Depth: Important pages should be reachable within a few clicks from the homepage. Analyze the site’s navigation structure for optimal user flow.
Sitemap and Robots.txt: Ensure there’s an XML sitemap that includes all important pages and that the robots.txt file is set up correctly to avoid blocking search engines from key pages. - Monitor Performance with Analytics and Tools
Google Analytics and Search Console: Regularly review data in Google Analytics and Google Search Console to track organic performance, keyword positions, and site health.
Set Up Goals and Conversions: Define conversions, such as form submissions or purchases, to measure the success of SEO changes. - Create an Actionable Report
Summarize findings and highlight critical issues, prioritized by impact.
Include recommendations with a timeline for implementation
- Understand Your Goals and KPIs

Performing a website audit is crucial to ensuring your site operates smoothly and effectively. Here’s a step-by-step approach to help you get started:
First, begin by crawling your website with tools like Moz or similar services. This will help you identify issues such as broken links, missing meta tags, and duplicate content. These are common problems that can hurt your website’s performance and user experience. Addressing these technical issues early on can prevent bigger problems down the line.
Next, review your on-page SEO. This means checking if your keywords, meta titles, descriptions, and header tags are correctly optimized. Don't forget the importance of alt text for images, as it not only enhances SEO but also improves accessibility. Following current SEO guidelines ensures that your site remains visible to search engines and attracts the right audience.
After that, focus on your website’s speed. Slow loading times can frustrate users and affect your search rankings. Tools like Google PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix can help identify areas where you can improve speed, such as compressing images or reducing unnecessary CSS and JavaScript files. Speed optimization is vital for both user experience and search engine performance.
Finally, it’s essential to keep your site mobile-friendly, secure, and accessible. Testing your site’s mobile compatibility and ensuring security features like SSL certificates are in place protect your users and boost trust. Regularly reviewing your content and monitoring analytics will help you stay on top of your site’s performance, making necessary improvements as you go. By auditing regularly, you’ll keep your site running at its best.

Who is correct - please help!
I have a website with a lot of product pages - often thousands of pages. As each of these pages is for a specific lease car they are often only fractionally different from other pages. The urls are too long, the H1 is often too long and the Title is often too long for "SEO best practice". And they do create duplication issues according to MOZ. Some people tell me to change them to noindex/nofollow whilst others tell me to leave them as they are as best not to hide from google crawler. Any advice will be gratefully received. Thanks for listening.

Premium domain name redirects
Hi, I run a tree surgery business - woodfeldertreecare.co.uk We're based in Manchester, UK. A few days ago I was called by Premium Domain Names who convinced me that buying treesurgeonsmanchester.com and treesurgerymanchester.com and redirecting them to our main site would be amazing for organic traffic. My designer and an SEO friend both reckon this was a waste of money and reckon I've been scammed. Any thoughts? Please help.

Separate service page for each key-word we're ranking in
Hello guys, I have a service-based website. Right now, I have around 30 commercial pages for different services, that we offer. I came up with idea to add service page for each keyword we're ranking in. For example, we offer home-construction service and we have 1 commercial page for this service. I will create 10-20 pages for keywords, related to home-construction services.

For example: bricklaying, Fundamental works, Landscape works, Concrete works, etc. I saw similar approach on this website. It's a link on bricklaying page: https://kiev.kabanchik.ua/ua/category/kladka-kirpicha If you scroll down you will see section with keywords, related to bricklaying and each keyword has separate page with duplicate content. My questions are: Do you know the name of this SEO tactic, so I can google more information about it? Do you think that it's good idea to use similar approach in order to improve your rankings for certain keywords? Is it a dangerous SEO tactic that may cause some penalties for your website or it's completely safe? Odd one - dropping positions but traffic improving
Seem to have a bit of an odd one. For the last few months been running a backlink campaign for a 2/3 year old site, got good positions for some keywords/pages but seems to have plateaued the last 60 days or so with some keywords dropping in position.
Link Building | | seoman10
The odd thing is traffic seems to be still improving (according to GA and GSC). I am wondering if - have hit a niche ceiling
or rankbrain type thing i.e. google trying to work out what the site should be ranking for and messing with positions.
or because it is just a newish site. Any ideas?2 -
How do you report SEO audit findings?
Hello, Mozzers! I'm curious to know how you report SEO audit findings. Do you use a spreadsheet? A presentation? A formal report? Or maybe something else. If you have a favourite audit template, I'd love to see it. A second question: what things do you report in an audit? I currently report crawl findings, authority and trust, link profiles, and competitive analysis. I also investigate a site's security—that's not usually part of an audit, but site owners need to know about it. What do you report to your audit customers? Thanks for sharing your auditing wisdom!
