Optimizing for Venice.
-
I had a client ask me why his website wasn't popping up for the local places results when he typed "plumbing". There were a group of google local places and my question is, how would I optimize for these with the Venice update. Any strategy? I didn't have an answer. Also "sewer repair" brings in great results.
Do I optimize for the keyword sewer repair?
Any suggestions would help out greatly.
Thanks,
Greg -
Hi Greg,
In order to qualify for inclusion in the local results, your client must:
-
Have a physical street address in the target city (not a P.O. box, virtual office or shared address)
-
Have a local area code phone number matching the target city (not a toll free number, call tracking number or shared number)
-
Have face-to-face transactions with customers, either at the place of business or at the customers' homes or businesses.
If your client can answer yes to all 3 of these criteria, then you can create a strategy including some or all of the following components:
-
A high quality website with excellent content optimized for both his services and his geo terms. Optimize title tags, meta description tags, header tags, alt tags, internal links and copy so that they reflect both what he does and where he does it. Build a unique page on the website for each of his distinct services (water heater repair, sewer repair, septic service, etc.). If the business model is go-to-client (like a plumber), build a city landing page for each of the main cities he serves (see: http://www.solaswebdesign.net/wordpress/?p=1403). Be sure that every page you publish is unique. No cutting and pasting from one page to the next.
-
Put the business' complete NAP (name, address, phone number) in the footer of the website and on the Contact page, preferably encoded in Schema.
-
Consider having an onsite blog to continue publishing local-focused content over time.
-
Create a Google Places for Business Page, adhering strictly to the Google Places Quality Guidelines (see: http://support.google.com/places/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=107528)
-
Begin building citations on a variety of indexes and directories to strengthen and diversify the number of places in which your client is being profiled. Be sure NAP is totally consistent everywhere it is published.
-
Work to earn reviews from happy customers.
-
Consider linkbuilding and social media efforts that will build authority.
This is just a brief summary. Every step has its nuances and there is more you can do, but this should get the client started with building a Local presence on the web.

-
Here are a few things you could do (no particular order):
- Optimize for the keyword + the location you're targeting.
- Set your company location in Google Places, Google+ and other social networks.
- Use rich snippets.
- Use a ccTLD or establish your domain geolocation within Google Webmaster Tools.
- Get some local link juice.
- Get a local IP address.
Good luck!

How To Optimize For Same Word, Different Spelling
Hi all. Just wondering what peoples stance is on using multiple variations of keywords on a webpage - those keywords that have the same meaning and search intent, but are just spelt differently. i.e. 'woodscrews' and 'wood screws' (the latter has a significantly higher search volume) You could approach the webpage in 4 different ways; 1. Use ONLY 'wood screws' on-page, and in the page <title><br />2. Use ONLY 'woodscrews' on-page, and in the page <title><br />3. Use BOTH 'wood screws' and 'woodscrews' on-page, and BOTH in the page <title><br />4. Use BOTH 'wood screws' and 'woodscrews' on-page, but ONLY one variation in the page <title></p> <p>We've run some tests in the past but there were never any clear takeaways, a mixed bag of results really.</p> <p>Also, If they are considered the same keyword by Google why are the ranking positions always different for each variation?</p> <p>I'm not sure there' a specific answer to this, just interested to hear peoples thoughts really.</p> <p>Many thanks in advance!</p> <p>Lee.</p></title>

Tips for optimizing website for one long term keyword
Hello, I have quite specific long term keyword (4 part keyword) for which I would like to rank as high as possible and other keywords would come automatically, I know there's lot to it how to do it properly, but is there any good tips you could help me out with? I have 4-5 different pages with the keyword related product, would it be smart to optimize them all for the one keyword or optimize just one of those pages and leave others with other information, this I believe would be important subject to decide? I know I could add the exact long term keyword since it's related to content to titles, h1 headers, alt tags , file names and url, but would it be smart to use the optimization for that exact long term keyword on all those pages or just one? This is very important subject for my business and any advice will be most highly valued. Many thanks

Ranking for keyword I don't optimize for & Other oddities
Hi Moz Community! I've been working with a clients website for about a year now. They were hit with the original Panda update because of some spammy links from a shady SEO firm. We've made a decent climb back but not a full recovery. There are some weird things happening that I would love some insight into. 1. Ranking for keywords we don't optimize for: I noticed some low keyword volume for a keyword term that is close to our main term, but is slightly different. We don't optimize for this term at all on our website. We rank third for this term, and actually show site links in the result, which doesn't happen for any of our other pages. 2. Index not found when doing site: search: Other oddity is that when you search site:www.mywebsite.com, I see all the pages within the site except the homepage. Not sure whats going on here, but when I fetch the homepage in GWMT, it returns the homepage. When you query the homepage by itself, it also ranks. Any help would be appreciated! Regards, J

Optimizing for Branded and Unbranded terms - ecommerce
Hi, To date, we have gone with optimizing our website for branded search terms - we have done this by including the manufacturer + product name in the links to the product, product urls, page titles, h1's etc... Now, we are looking at optimising also for non branded terms - but all of our products are already optimized as above and I'm a bit lost as to how we would proceed with this process - my thoughts are: Create the generic categories, e.g, "Decorative Mirrors" But then, if they link through to the existing mirrors which are optimised for branded search, how do I go about it? Do I create a duplicate of the product and remove all the branded terms in the page title, h1, url and create new content for it? E.g., the same product but available twice... Doesnt seem logical from a user perspective but I cant think of another way to do this?? Thank you

Is it Possible to Optimize Another Company Name/Product for Organic Results?
We have a potential new client seeking to rank organically for a company name and brand product who have left the market (still in business as they are a massive medical company, but just moved away from selling this one specific product) and my new client has since picked up their slack and slowly a couple others have entered the market over the past 5 years with different products. My client's product is a direct replacement/alternative to the other product, actually, it's the same, just had to be renamed/rebranded. They are wondering how to get their website ranked for that company and branded product name to show in Google SERPs organically without being slapped with a cease and desist order. We know they can do it for PPC, but how for organic results since we need the content within the site pages or tags. Any suggestions or real life experiences would be greatly appreciated! I look forward to reading your feedback. Patrick

Optimal ratio of different categories of link
Hello, I know this probably depends on market sector, etc., but are there broad guidelines on the optimal ratio of different types of links - blogs, directory links, citations, etc. I'm working for a tourism business and see nearly all of their links are from directories - both generic and tourism specific. I'm thinking about re-balancing that with guest blogs, PR work, etc.

How to optimize on-page for a large service area?
Hello Everyone, I'm in the process of setting up a website for a plumbing company that services a relatively large area in Michigan. They have physical locations spread out across the area, but they want to optimize for other areas as well. Naturally, I set up pages on the site with unique content relating to the town/area. I understand that these may not rank locally, but we can at lest shoot for organic rankings in this area. My question here more relates to how to link these pages in the site. Should I have a bunch of footer links with something like city, state, zip as the anchor text. Or should I create an "Areas Served" page, and link out from there? I don't want to appear spammy, beaus this isn't what i'm trying to do, I just want to make sure this is done right. Thanks Zach
