Organic Google Sitelinks - can I edit?
-
A client just contacted me saying a competitor is threatening legal action threatened against a page description in a Google sitelink (just double checked and its in the serps results too).
I checked the site and the content doesn't appear on that page or anywhere else on the site.
I also added a Meta description to that page to see if that will have an effect.
The page is the home page and I don't really want to demote it.
Is there anything else I can/should do?
-
Awesome! I believe it will change once Google will re-crawl your website!
-
That is spot on Moosa - noodp tags added, meta description added, reindex requested - Thanks

Usually when Google didn't find any description available on the page it usually grab it from 3rd part sources that may includes Open Directory Project or any other place where your website listing is present.
Now when you have added the Meta description it should change it once Google will re crawl the site.
hope this helps!

Sorry - I should have been clearer.
The site never had meta descriptions previously - I have just added them.
The Serp/Sitelink description seems to have been created by Google as I cannot find it in any context on the site.
The Serp/Sitelink description makes my clients site out to have been accredited by a National Association, which is hasn't.
I don't know how Google got the Serp/Sitelink description - but would like to

If I correctly understand your question...
Legal action for Meta Description... simply didn’t make any sense to me!
I mean if the Meta Description is not available within the content or elsewhere on the site then its Google who is grabbing the Meta Description from some 3rd party source which might or might not in your control.
But in all there is no point of legal action against this because this is not the result of something you have done or in your control.
I think you should talk to your client and explain them how Google is getting the Meta Description!
-
you mean the sitelinks that show up below the result of your site?
If yes, then you can go to google webmaster tools and remove that by inserting the URL that you dont want to show up in the SERPS.

Google Cookies - Organic vs PPC visitors
I am not a developer - I am researching this for our team, so please, be gentle... I am also not quite sure how to ask this question. We want to serve up custom pages for visitors from Google organic. We aren't doing anything underhanded - the pages will have very small differences that will not affect our rankings and won't land us in Google jail. When a Google visitor hits one of our pages, what specific piece of data are we looking for to determine: a. It's a Google visitor b. He/she came from organic results. I need to tell our developers to look for something that triggers the custom page. It's the same data that Google Analytics uses to trigger the appropriate visitor type. Please pardon my naivete.

Google search results
I have been doing some searches on google to see where my new site shows up, I started using the search words "graphic design firm st. louis" as a gauge, because my title is St. Louis Missouri Graphic Design Firm. I showed up on about page 5 to start , if I include the word "firm" and a few pages further back if I just search "graphic design st. louis", without the word firm. It seemed i was slowly moving up pages with both searches and then a few days ago I jumped to page 1 for search "graphic design firm st. louis" the thing is it doesnt show up at all now if i search "graphic design st. louis" without the word firm. what would cause the one search to jump so high while the other one dissapeared completely?? and what can i do? my keyword density is same for both , any ideas.

What are the ranking factors for "Google News"? How can we compete?
We have a few sport news websites that are picked up by Google News. Once in a blue moon, one of our articles ranks for a great keyword and shows in one of the 3 listings that Google News has in SERPS. Any tips on how we can we optimise more of our articles to compete in these 3 positions?

Change to SiteLinks?
Hi All, Perhaps it's been like this all along (I don't think so) but can someone tell me why some pages with Google sitelinks now look like this (see the "Coke" search) while others look like this (see the "Amazon" search image). Is this because of Rich Snippet use? One of my client's SiteLinks used to resemble the Amazon one, but now resembles the Coke one (not preferred). Any input? Thanks, Chris Elevated Synergy Group - SEO coke.png amazon.png

Google is not Indicating any Links to my site
We built a new store on another ccTLD and linked to it from some of our other domains in a few locations. I am noticing that with the Google operator command "links:" we are seeing nothing linking to our site anywhere. Some things to clarify: These are not no-follow links These pages linking to our new domain are indexed The pages being linked to on our new domain are indexed This is not a flash site or heavy in JavaScript The links existed the day the site was launched so when the new pages were crawled they existed. "Site:" command in Google shows me that my new site is indexed. What could potentially be causing this? I am trying to get these newer ccTLD's to begin ranking and I understand that I need to get links going to these pages since they are fairly new (2.5 months) so I can outrank the .com in the SE's in those locales. (Like Google.co.uk)
