Is this going to shoot people and my clients in the foot?

I have mentioned before about rewriting search URLs to look like landing pages, in e-commerce sites. Is this going to be a bad practice to use on a wide scale?
I took the time to make a module for the platform I develop on which is going to make it easier to do. Normally a search would look something like shop.com/search_controller?search_term=searchword and the search pages are disallowed in the robots.txt file.
But the module I made lets you configure them to be like site.com/searchword or what ever you want it to be. It also lets you configure the meta title and the meta description of the page too. Here is a screenshot of the options.

The module also appends the urls to the site map of the site too. Will this get people a penalty by google? Or will it get their pages indexed? I have done similar on a small scale of like 5 words per site, I am wondering how it will be seen on a large scale.

Looks good.

Correct, here is an example, this is a search how it is normally generated, http://admedonline.com/index.php?controller=search&controller=search&orderby=position&orderway=desc&search_query=tape
It uses no meta tags really and has an ugly url that is not great for indexing. Plus I disallow the search in the robots.
Here is one of the searches that I rewrote, I have cheesy meta tags just to test it, but it has a better url.

Lesley,
That sounds fine. I was thinking of these general site search pages I keep coming across, where someone stuck Google site search or something onto their site and then Google returns one of those pages. Often times there's nothing even relevant in the search. The big thing for me is that I want to find what I was looking for when I click through a search result. I don' want to find another search results page. That said, if the results page is a list of products that I'm searching for, then I've found what I'm looking for.
Based on your last description, it sounds fine to me and I don't think it would be considered poor quality. It's basically just a category page and I always recommend to ecommerce clients that they optimize their category pages.
Sounds good.

See my strategy is not to provide poor results, but more targeted results. How I normally use it is like this, say you have a site selling laptops. You would put them into categories like amd, intel, then screen size, maybe processor speed and ram. But what happens when someone searches "red laptop" or "beats by dre laptop" having a search page come up with all of the appropriate laptops is not a bad thing. I don't recommend people over categorizing, so I see this is a way around it.

It's hard to know how Google will respond, but I can tell you that I find search results pages in the search results all the time. Personally, I can't stand it.
The two factors that I think will play into whether Google does something about this is:
- Will they think these pages are poor results?
- Will search results pages in Google results become a widespread enough issue that they take the time to deal with it?
I guess one more question to ask would be whether, if they do address it, whether they would penalize sites or just remove the pages from the search results.
My guess is that they probably would find most of these pages to be poor quality results. I don't know if they'll get around to doing anything about it, but if they did, I think they would just remove the pages from the results, not penalize people.
That's my $0.02.
Personally, I hope this doesn't become widespread because I really don't like site search pages in the Google results.

Client Portal and SEO Considerations?
Hi Moz and Moz fans, We are looking to add a client portal to the website. Basically, I haven't found too much on this with regard to SEO. The idea would be that certain parts of the website would be hidden under a pay wall and for subscribers, they would be able to see all content. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with that and what SEO considerations to take into account. One thing we are particularly concerned about is how Google will index the portions of the website behind the pay wall, if at all. Obviously, we would rather that they don't index it, so that people can't find a way to get to the info without paying. I would imagine it would have to do with the type of coding, however, I am not a coding guru, so I am not 100% on that. Anyway, anyone that has any experience in this kind of thing and can comment on this at all, any comment is welcome. Also, any documentation that could be helpful would be welcome too. Thanks

Going mobile: Responsive or different mobile version?
Going mobile: Responsive or different mobile version?

Which one should we choose? Should we do responsive design or should we have a different mobile version and go m.domain.com ? http://searchenginewatch.com/sew/how-to/2253965/3-reasons-why-responsive-web-design-is-the-best-option-for-your-mobile-seo-strategy I just read this article. It seems that the responsive design is OK, but the first comment kills that opinion and says that it is pretty hard to make it OK. 🙂 So I need more opinions? What is best for people and for SEO?0 -
What is the longest you would go back to ressurrect links that should have been 301's?
I have never thought of anything beyond a site that was possibly developed a month or two ago, but an interesting possible client has come along and begs a question. They had their site "redesigned" in April 2014 and it appears whomever did the work did not realize what a 301 was for. Using ahrefs or MajesticSEO, they have gone from roughly 15,000 referring pages to 500 and the time line perfectly intersects the redesign. Sooooo, just wondering if any of you geniuses has ever gone back that far to try and pull off a 301.... I am actually just thinking of a link building / content marketing plan but thought it was an interesting question. Thanks for the help, Robert

Is my client getting overcharged?
My client has medium sized website (15k pages). They have a company that takes care of everything related to the website. Recently they decided to put a wordpress blog on the site, with a bought theme that only needed the yoast SEO plugin. On an extension like this www.domain.com/blog I could do this very quickly and I am not a professional programmer. The company claims it took them 40 hours and charged 40 x 125$ = 5,000 $ for it. That does not make sense to me at all. Can anyone explain to me how a clean wordpress install with a preselected theme can take 40 hours? Especially when the people that are installing it call themselves wordpress experts and make custom themes etc. Thanks in advance.

How to answer this request from a client?
Hello Mozzers, I just launched a website for one of my clients and one of the update requests they had was to add the first link in the navigation again when the navigation drops down. Here is an example of the navigation now: http://screencast.com/t/K6ooX0I9pe For example, they would want "About" showing up again, they want this for every navigation item. I know this wouldn't be right. How would you respond to them?

Changing design for a client. SEO concerns.
Hi there! A client requested me to change the look of his website entirely. It currently ranks #16 on Google with one of their main keywords. My problem is: The current site was made in a CMS I'm not familiar with and all of its pages urls are not SEO friendly (EX: http://www.mysite.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49&Itemid=95). It is the first time I have come up with this situation so I would appreciate any tips or links to useful information. I tried searching in SEOmoz and came up with nothing. I'm sure this is a common problem though. Since they want a static website, for starters their page extensions will change from .php to .html I'm not 100% sure but I think this will be a problem for their current ranking in Google. Any ideas? Edit: I forgot to mention that all of the backlinks this site has points to their hompage as www.mysite.com, I guess this is good.

Need to rebuild client's flash website
I am working with their web designer and need to figure out a way to rebuild their site which is currently all in flash. I was wondering if there was a way to do this without spending a ton of time in completely re-doing the site from scratch.
